Same here.  I've also found that, contrary to popular opinion, I can open it up and play a cut.  It takes some time to get comfortable with; but so does everything else.

You can hit a cut with a chipper? Just how long of a shot are you playing? I would think that if you saw any "cut curve" on a shot it's a lot longer than a chip!

The putt technique is why I would not bag a chipper.  It's easy with say an 8 iron.

Runyans technique is good in the right situation...

When I could first afford a set of "sorta good" clubs, it ran 2 through 9 iron. No PW or SW. So, I learned to chip and pitch with my 9 iron. I broke the shaft on that club, was too poor to have the 9 re-shafted, so I topped out at an 8. That's how I learned. To this day I love to chip with the 8 iron, or even lower. It depends on the situation, but I will use an 8, 7, or 6 iron for chipping. Or a 2 hybrid!

I know there are two schools of thought on this. Use one club for chipping, or use different clubs for chipping depending on the situation. You have to go with your own preference.

My buddy has a cheap, old chipper in his bag and I started fooling with it around the green before we were to play in the league. It felt cheap and "tinny", and turned me off of these clubs forever.

Putting is not why you're a 15-16hcp. If you're hitting a high %GIR AND you only have a few 3 putts and otherwise 2 putts then you wouldn't be a 16hcp.

My game goes as follows
260+ drive
2nd shot is between 120-155
3rd shot lands either on green (far from hole) or just off the green.
from there I either have to chip onto the green or make a putt, or make a long putt.
Either way I am looking at 3 if not 2 putts, which will be a par/bogie.

I love this wedge. I have the same one and I rarely mishit it. I used to mishit my 56 degree wedge all the time. Inside 100 yards, I use this club 80% of the time. the other 20% is my pitching wedge for bump and run type shots if I have alot of green to work with.

@Elmer proximity to the pin might have something to do with it. I am in a similar situation, although I do get a few 1 putts per round. If you can get your approach shots and chips/pitches closer to the hole then you greatly increase your chances to make the first putt.

Most of the time when I do get a GIR, I am 20+ feet away. So yes its on the green, but not with a realistic putt for birdie. Then the 1-2 times per round when I do have a birdie look from 10 feet or less, its still only a 50/50 chance of those putts going in. Sometimes they do, sometimes they dont.

I dont see how or where a chipper fits into my game.
I would much rather spend my time working on my accuracy and getting the ball closer to the hole.

Right. So your ball striking is why you're a 15hcp. Not your putting. You said "I'm a guarantee 2 putt, maybe a few 3's." If that was the case, every time you two putt you're making par or better....but you're not. Why? Because you're not hitting greens in regulation and that's a problem with ball striking, not putting.

To me it wastes a spot in the bag.

chip and run is essential in ones arsenal but it's very lie dependent.

I agree.  I think being able to do more than just pitch a sw high makes the short game easier.

I just acquired a used Odyssey X Act 37* Tank Chipper. A friend of mine told me about it and I picked one up on Ebay a month or so ago. That club is awesome! It's a design from Roger Cleveland and its genius.  I have always had a better than decent short game, but man o man does this baby rock off the fringe. I've sunk more chips from 20-25' out than I've ever had before. There's just something about the wide face and the grooved putter insert on it. I've never had this much control on a chip before. The super stroke grip and putter-esque design of it seems a bit off at first, but once you use it and see how effortless it is, you'll be amazed. I find myself getting more excited to try 20' fringe shots than 7 or 8' putts- all because of this club. It's never going to leave my posession.
