Day 52 - December 22, 2021

Neck was screwy today so… I limited myself to some chip shots for ten minutes.

Day 143:

Rained all day, so only was able to do indoor stuff; backswing rehearsals focusing on hip turn priority piece, a little grip work in the mirror, and some yardstick putting drill.

Day 15 (22 Dec 21) - Rain done, skies cleared and able to get out in the backyard this afternoon.  Worked on chip & putt drill.  As I have three holes cut in the yard about 20-25 yds apart, can get decent chip shots in along with putts for “par” or better using 8i and putter.  Made this a game with the grandson - basically we are chipping par 3 holes.  Makes for good fun, and getting “birdie” the goal.  We played about 12 holes, had a number of pars and several birdies.  Makes focusing on getting ball close key as the “yard” putting relies heavily on the ball being close.

Okay, I'm back in on the 5 minutes per day challenge.

Day 1:

Spent 5 minutes in front of a mirror. Working on my priority pieces. (And my set up piece) No ball, just a 7 iron and 2 mirrors. One down the line and one face on.

Then spent 5 minutes (12 balls) rolling straight 6 foot putts. Putting to a hole that is 2-3/16" in diameter. I made 8 out of 12. This is my first step to sharpening my bead. ... possibly slight benefit to speed as well.

Edited by ChetlovesMer
added that the mirror work is also for set up

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Day 63 (12/23/21) - Things started out pretty rough on today's putting session. Went back to basics of stance and ball position and mostly "righted the ship". Did the "ladder" drill (successive putts of 1' to 6') trying to both make the putt and have the ball return somewhere between the 1' and 2' hash marks. Goal is the work this to 1' to 1.5' return.

Day 16 (23 Dec 21) - Played 18 with my five yr old grandson.  Worked on just keeping the ball in the short stuff.  Was a so-so round in terms of working on game improvement but a blast with my fave golf buddy…

Day 64 (12/24/21) - My PuttOUT mirror and gate arrived yesterday! Today I hit putts using both, starting with the mirror at 3' and the gate at 2', then moved the mirror back to 6' while keeping the gate at 2'. I rolled putts cleanly through the gate until I hit 6' at which point I only got 3 out of 5 through the gate without touching the sides. As is the case with all of my putting practice, I worked on putting with a speed such that on the return, the ball stopped at about 18" (but definitely between the 1' and 2' lines).

My approach is to make all of this indoor putting work have an element of "speed" in addition to "bead".

Day 2:

I did a bunch of mirror work. All slow motion. Working on my priority pieces.

I used a 7 iron in the basement. I used a mirror down the line and one face on.

Too busy today to really do much,  it got a break in the rain to work on my priority piece while hitting balls.

    • At $25… And $5 for all bets, I'd do it like this… And we'll just assume that we have 22 with @dennyjones just adding to skins if he can play. 22 players is 11 teams… so… Skins $110/(# of skins) [$110 = 22 * $5] Nassau (Teams) $110 * 3 (FBT) but divided up this way: $20 / $20 / $70 $10 / $10 / $60 -- / -- / $50 -- / -- / $40 -- / -- / $30 -- / -- / $20 CTP $22 each. Or $23 if @dennyjones is in. That's just off the top of my head. Feel free to make changes, offer suggestions, etc. I tried to distribute $330 fairly. If you win the front or the back, it seems likely you might win the overall. But even if you sweep, that's $110, which is 1/3 of the pot, which kinda feels fair, too. Maybe?
    • Yes.  We did best points net two- man teams, but only overall IIRC at Beaver Creek. 80% handicap. And top three individual nets got a little something.  Yes, that's it. The three individual competitions - front, back and overall are great for big groups.  The $25 set up sounds like a winner as long as no one has a strong aversion to it.
    • Day 4: Did my usual slow motion swings. Still working on being lateral with the hips and not letting my hips come towards the ball or get to far behind me.    Also started to work on some putting. Just swinging from coin to coin. New concept as I always tried to accelerate through the putt. Probably why I sucked at lag putting.
    • You could take it a step farther and… write it down, and then tape it to your shaft beneath your grip. Like… this: Chapter 7, Page 37.
    • “Don’t hit 80 yards. Swing 9 o’clock” - is what my golf coach told me, when I was choosing between my wedges (PW, GP, …). Now I have a printed card where I write the average distance of every wedge that I hit with a 9 o’clock backswing motion. Before: When my distance to the green was around 40 to 120 yards, I would choose the club that would go that distance with either a full swing or a ‘not full swing’. I thought I had a good feeling for the distance and I’d swing according to that distance (sometimes a full swing with a 60 degree lob wedge to reach 100 to 110 yards). After: Now I know how far each wedge goes with a nine o’clock backswing and I systematically dial it up or down by increments of e.g. 5 degrees depending on the distance. Outcome: - My distance control has significantly improved: I am rarely short or long over the green - GIR percentage improved - Consequently, my putting percentage improved. I rarely have three putts thanks to the proximity of my shots near the pin - Now I rarely do a full swing with my wedges; that helps with more consistent shots and has the benefit of less air-time / wind impact For example: Before I would full swing my GW for 120 yard shots and now I go a club up and use my PW with a relaxed 9 o’clock shot to more accurately reach that distance.
