Day 6: 6/16/23

3-hour lesson with Gig Hilton at Sapona Golf and Tennis Club in Lexington, NC. Gig is a Wright Balance instructor. Reinforced that I was an 8 on the Upper Core swing measurement and my backswing was too narrow. Worked on several drills to extend my backswing with a wedge, an 8, and my driver. Gig then placed me on a carpet that measured how my weight shift or pressure moved around. I tend to hang back with irons and wedges. This might explain why I hit just under 68% of fairways with my driver while my GIRs have dropped. Really felt like I was striping the ball when the lesson ended.

Day 7: Jun 17

Played in the monthly medal (first time for everything). Shot +2 nett…and when I unfortunately remember how I had to write down a 10 for a par 5, I realise just how good a round of golf i put together from the back tees (where I’ve never played before). Played smart golf (mostly), made good decisions (mostly!) and rode my luck a little bit. But made plenty of good shots.

Things to work on: make sure I’m aligned correctly for shots and focus on accuracy.

Day 13: long practice session at the range. Long game for about 45 minutes with filming. Found out I was setting up pretty closed to my target, so good to fix that. Then did short game for over an hour. Worked on putting speed drills and short putts and then a little bit of everything chipping.

Day 54 - Played 18 holes. Driver feeling worked really really well when I committed to it. Multiple drives of 290+ in the middle of the fairway. Even misses off to the right were around 275-280 range.

Partial wedges need a bit more work, everything flew 5-10yds longer than I saw on the launch monitor. Missed a bunch of greens long from 75-110.

Day 1: well, started the practice up again. Unfortunately, I popped my hamstring and can’t swing full right now. But worked more on making sure my grip was correct and as I mentioned previously, making sure my wrists set. Just feeling the club get set.

Day 8: Jun 18

Practice day at the range, continuing to try and develop/maintain a good swing path. As before it’s gets away from me with driver & 3-wood, but it remains playable. Rest is in good shape; a controlled fade with a 4-hybrid upwards is adding more confidence in my game.

The “bad miss” with my driver is either losing control of the clubface (leaving it too open) or maybe it’s down to the impact spot on my driver being near the heel. I’ve said this before…but I need to understand what’s happening. That means a solo trackman session or two.

Day 34. Range today. Worked on my PP for a bit with 6 iron and driver including set up and backswing tempo. Then moved onto keeping my backswing long as it tends to shorten during rounds. Finally, just worked down the bag with a couple of shots with each club to targets.

Day 230, June 18, 2023

Lawnmower broke so my plan to go to the range today was scuttled. I did some work indoors in prep for a round on Monday and Tuesday. Reflections. Have to get the backswing right or the downswing almost doesn't matter.

Edit (3:30pm): Well, I lied. I went to the range and hit about 45 golf balls. Took about an hour or so. I like these west coast U.S. Opens.

Day 8: 6/18/23

indoor chips went well.

Stack Neural Training preceded by Wright balance training. I am 2 days late due to a lesson Friday and playing yesterday, and it showed. I finished at 110, 4 mph below my high during this session. A little off my game today.

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
