1/29/18:

More work with my path drill with the soda bottles today. About 10 minutes of the wedge version of this drill. I hit about 30 shots with this drill. Didn't hit the bottles at all.

Day 29

Spent a few minutes making driver practice swings, working on setup, path, and speed. Used an alignment reference to observe clubhead path and basically just worked on moving faster--arms, hips, shoulders, just faster rotation.

Spent 15 minutes on 3-6 foot putts, as I have been, working on aim, setup and stroke. I have been working on incorporating a forward press in my putting stroke, but I am about to abandon this on short putts. It is forced. I have never done this in over 40 years of playing, but decided to try it as a way of smoothly starting my stroke. I think I will continue to work with it on long putts, as it may promote smoothness when hitting harder, but seems to have the opposite effect on short putts, throwing me off line slightly. My practice putting cup has a 3 inch entrance. Many times with the forward press on short strokes, I hit the edge of the entrance. With proper speed, these would likely be in the hole, but without the forward press, I seem to be able to hit the center of the opening more consistently.

Day 1 again - had to take a few days off to let injuries heal. Today, mirror work at the gym. Focused on hip turn again continuing through impact.

Day 29.

Had some free time this morning and decided to work on a grip I have been fooling around with. The info comes from You Tube, and some of the Paul Runyon chipping/putting videos. Runyon was a golfer with a short, long game, but made up for it with his short game.

What it amounts to is gripping the club with "open palms". What this does is it keeps the wrists from being too loose during the stroke, which helps keep the club/putter face square to the line longer.

For me, the other positive is I have a surgically repaired left wrist, and this grip helps with that.

Although I have tried this grip before, I didn't give it much of a chance back then. Right now I am in the "uncomfortable" stage of this change, but the improvement is already showing up.

Day 29   On the improvement path!!  Finished day 11 of the 10,000 putt challenge, making 100 putts from both 3 and 5 feet.  Trying to work on my balance when in my putting stance so the weight is even front to back of each foot.   Then to the range for a couple of hours plus.  Worked on two drills focused on staying in posture and releasing the club (feet together drill and right foot back drill).  150 golf balls later -- time to head home.  Felt I got better today :-)

29/1/18 - 10 minutes' work on the left knee motion in the mirror, targeting more of a downward motion to stop my slight sway toward the target. Thought I was getting it yesterday, but finding it tougher today...

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

Day 1 (actually day 6, but no backdating posts...)

1/29/17 (posting within 24 hrs is not backdating, is it?)

went to the PGA superstore (as I always will be in the winter) to hit balls on the simulator.

Working very hard on my back-swing from bottom to top.

really two goals:

1) start by working lead shoulder down towards the ball to promote a more vertical path going back.
2) trying to make a full turn to the top ending in a smooth transition.  This is a work in process as I have to focus on extending that turn on every single swing.  too many years of an abbreviated turn has ingrained some bad habits.

My trail knee and hips are all connected in this.   I can see it on video, and can feel it when it happens correctly, but cannot seem to make the right movement on a consistent basis as of yet.

Day 30.

Today was a "sandy" practice day. Beach sand to be exact. Had my choice of firm to soft sand to use various club with.

Focus was on exploding the ball out of the soft stuff, to picking the ball clean off the wet, firmer stuff. That, and getting my alignment correct to send the ball to my chosen landing area.

In a little while I will be practicing my "casting". Locals say the ocean perch are biting in the surf. :-P

Day 305:

I did my path drill with the soda bottles today. But I did something slightly different. I used to wedge version of the drill (all four bottles), with a driver! Yes, a driver. I just swung at about 50%-60% just to see if I could miss all four bottles with the driver, and I can! I don't know if I can at full speed, but it's encouraging to not be coming from the outside with the driver and cutting across it. I still have my "moon ball cut" as my go to shot if my swing is a little off, but I may not need it. (There are a couple holes I do need a fade on at my home course, or just a really straight 3-iron) It is starting to come around. Gosh, I have to wait two more months to try this on the golf course? Winter sucks.

30/1/18 - Still sticking to at least 10 minutes of putting practice per day to try to get used to the new setup positions and working on tempo with the mat. It's working on the mat, but I definitely need more practice on an actual green to get used to the way I feel with alignment. Also did some more mirror work on left knee movement with slow-motion backswing work - every little helps!

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

Day 2:

1/30/18

Hit balls today for 30 minutes over lunch.

noticed that as I have been focusing on takeaway path and making a full turn, I have kind of let my grip go to sh*t.  hit 6-iron all day focusing to think about grip and posture on the pre-swing and then takeaway path and a full turn on the back-swing.   mixed results for the day.

Day 30    Invested 2 hours at the range working on my pivot and turning into the right side!!  Mostly hit shots with my feet together.  Then spent 90 minutes on the putting green continuing the 10,000 Putt Challenge.   Today I made 100 putts from both 3 feet and 5 feet.  I chose a difficult downhill putt with 2 plus cups of break for one of my 5 footers.   Trying to make it more challenging... so it better translates to the course.

Day 30

10 minutes on 3-6 foot putts. Eliminating the forward press on shorter putts seems to be improving my consistency.

I sound like a stuck record. I am looking forward to some free time in the daylight to work on something else. I do like putting though.

Did slow motion turns to Check arm positions. My head seemed to be dipping down at impact on a couple videos my partner took. Doesn’t normally dip in front of mirror. Will try some attempts at “aggressive” swings to do if it happens then.

A few minutes working on driver swings, working on speed. A few slow backswings, then a few at speed, basically just trying to move faster.

Day 31.

Did a couple of things this morning.

First was some 3-6-9 putting. Pretty straight forward. Focus was to make putts from those distances using 3 balls. Out come was not very good for the 15 or so minutes I spent there.

Next was the driving range. Small bucket using just my 8i, 6i, and my 7w. Once warmed up, focus was hitting everything, with a fast swing speed. Faster than my normal swing Taking muddy divots were extra points. Very pleased with the results. Except for 5 or 6 fatties, the rest of the balls flew really well, and hit my landing areas.

Next week it's 4 rounds of golf on some quality courses. Lots of confidence in my game right now.

    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
