Day 39: Jul 24

Another matchplay round. Played -2 nett; with the exception of two blowup holes (a familiar mantra) I’ve played yet more good golf. Made good decisions and executed well.

Day 40: Jul 25

Played 18 at home course. Strung together a strong run of golf - 3 under bogey golf (or -7 nett) over 13 holes, which is outstanding for me - then deliberately stopped to focus on a tee shot that I’ve been struggling with from the longer tournament tee and tried a few different options. Not an easy tee shot to carry the trouble, but the bailout area in front is small and hard to find. I’ve got a better idea how to tackle the shot, but it’s a real risk/reward tee shot and probably means playing a precautionary provisional ball to avoid the trek back up the hill!

Finished off at home with some clubpath drills.

Day 267, July 25, 2023

Played 18 holes before spending eight hours downtown. Birdied #14 to knock that off the list, so that felt good.

Day 89 - Range session tonight working on my priority pieces. Bunch of time filming at the beginning working on setup and hand path with partial swings. Caught myself a couple times looking at other pieces of my swing on video and wanting to change everything at once but I snapped back into focusing on just my priority pieces and not getting ahead of myself.

Proud that I was able to refocus on my priority pieces, this sounds weird to say but I'm getting better at practicing.

Then hit a couple full swings at the end to various targets still focusing on the setup and hand path.

Contact was very solid and divots were much more neutral and consistent rather than severely out to in.

Day 8: range session. Worked on random shots through the bag. Generally happy with how that turned out. Need to keep my backswing feel more in mind, but solid contact and direction. Then putted for about 30 minutes, focusing on shorter putts with a sprinkling of lag putting.

Day 36 (26 Jul 23) - Worked on pitches with the 60deg today, focused making 1/2 swings and keeping speed up through contact.  Form fell off with several "hosel rockets".  Rather than get undone, I stopped, worked through the process and then worked to execute correction.

    • Day 191 (09 Nov 24) - After band rehearsal and afternoon yard work, broke out the 8i and hard foam balls to work on low pitches.  Main emphasis was on foot (especially the lead) position, hip rotation and ball position.  Spent time between each shot reflecting on the results of the previous swing. Making small adjustments as needed.
    • Seconding the aimpoint thing. I had a tournament a couple of weeks ago. Had a putt from the fringe about 25 feet. I looked at it and I thought it looked flat, then went to do my aimpoint and I was trying to figure out the left right break, but realized I was on quite a downslope. Turned sideways to do it the other way and estimated about a 3% slope downhill. Basically straight. It was on a green with two tiers and I was all on the top tier. It's a hole that's benched into a slope and I think relative to the slope around me it just looked flat. My feet told me otherwise and I hit that putt like it was six inches and got it to tap in distance. If I had only relied on my eyes I'd have been chipping from off the green (literally - greens were very fast and the hole was only 6-8 feet from the tier. That ball would have gone off the green. When I got in the clubhouse afterwards people were talking about how many putts they had on that green. Combine that with my having four-putted 4 holes earlier (another tier was involved in that one except I had to go down it). I was thanking my lucky stars I did the aimpoint check. Use your feet. It might take you a little while to get used to it, but once you do, it's golden.
    • Agree.  Look at it from the side to determine if it's uphill or downhill. Also, look at the hole and determine the highest point of the hole.  That's the direction of uphill, at least near the hole.
