Day 4: Jun 14

A short indoor putting session on a mat, focusing on a more consistent (and slightly shorter) backswing to help develop better distance control. Seems to encourage a more positive stroke.

Day 4: 6/14/23

Putting through 50 mm gates for 30 minutes. Stack neural training session 16/24. E-speed of 110, which is 4 mph less than my high. Busy day and needed to squeeze in training prior to meeting tonight.

Day 13

Full backswing, specifically trying to reduce trail arm pulling behind causing lead arm to bed. Focusing on reducing the hip twist.

Day 5: Jun 15

Short game lesson, looking at ensuring I have the correct technique for a standard chip (also spent time discussing and experimenting with different shot types; what’s good, what’s not, what to consider, etc). Then switched to putting: a more relaxed stance needed, square my shoulders, allow my right shoulder to drop. Feels quite different but I can see the logic in what my coach is doing - it seems to be creating a more consistent roll.

But enough typing: time to go practise this new method on my putting mat!

Day 23, June 15th, 2023

Played 9 holes. Focused on shorter swings and staying wide. Hit some ok shots. Hit some shots where I felt more of the swing feels I want.  I was always up near the green.

Day 5: 6/15/23

Hoped to practice full swing in preparation for a lesson tomorrow but the range I went to closed when it started raining. Practiced chipping with my 50* wedge and focused on using the bounce of the club. Very successful for my first attempt. Chips and pitches were higher and had more spin than I usually have. When I executed the shot properly I never made a divot!

Day 6: Jun 16

Played 18 holes at home course. Some decent golf played, hampered by a number of bad lies (some caused by me, but others were just how things ended up after a sensible shot). Then started to flag during the last few holes and my form eroded away somewhat.

Lessons learned: preserve my energy levels (so bring some food with me, no matter how friendly the game is). Also, really think about the shot when I’m in a sticky lie; don’t force a solution or try to do too much. As I play more I’ll better understand what I can really do in certain situations.

Day 6: 6/16/23

3-hour lesson with Gig Hilton at Sapona Golf and Tennis Club in Lexington, NC. Gig is a Wright Balance instructor. Reinforced that I was an 8 on the Upper Core swing measurement and my backswing was too narrow. Worked on several drills to extend my backswing with a wedge, an 8, and my driver. Gig then placed me on a carpet that measured how my weight shift or pressure moved around. I tend to hang back with irons and wedges. This might explain why I hit just under 68% of fairways with my driver while my GIRs have dropped. Really felt like I was striping the ball when the lesson ended.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
