I've played courses where the tees aren't colors. Where they're numbered. Animal names. Railroad names. Names of different kinds of ducks (bonus points for someone who knows the one I'm thinking of here…). etc.

Why limit ourselves to a set of colors?

I always play the whites. I like when there is a short par 3 and the blue, white and red markers are all together. I always say "I'll play this from the Blues."

Learn something new every day.  I have never seen or heard of that, and I've played a fair amount of golf in my 76 years.  I have heard of and seen HOLES with catchy names like Augusta National has.  Additionally, most golf courses use standard Blue, White, and Red yardage markers for 200,150, and 100 yards to COG which most golfers understand, so you would think that Tee boxes would have the same standard colors for the same reason.  I will admit that now, some courses get carried away with the number of Tee Boxes offered.

I've been told the correct tees = 28 x your average drive.

For club events/league, I don't have a choice. They tell us what tees to play from.

Within Erie county, I can think of courses that:

• Have only a 150-yard post. It's brown.
• Have a 150-yard bush.
• Use yellow for 200 yard markers.
• Don't have any such yardage markers, just whatever yardage the sprinkler head is from the CoG.
• And, just speaking of colors for tees… one course uses gold for the back tees, another for the senior tees.

I'm half your age, man. I would agree that it's a very, very loose standard, and that "most" or definitely "many" courses do it, but it's not all that firm.

Yes, it is confusing.  On Long Island, NY the State courses use a yellow stake on the right-hand side of the fairway to show 200 yards driven from the Tee.  And then a Blue stake to show 200 yards to COG.

When you think about it, the girls are the smart ones.  They could care less about colors, yardage, names, numbers, etc.   They just Tee off where you tell them to Tee off, hit the ball straight down the middle of the fairway about 3 feet off the ground so as not to hurt any birds, plop it in the can, and go sit on the bench in the shade and work on their knitting while  the guys are walking around through the woods looking for a Titleist with their initials on it.

I find I have the most fun when playing courses that are 6,000 to 6,200.  I think I average about 220 off the tee, which is about 10-30 yards less than my golf buddies.  The formula of 28 times average drive fits what I like.  A for golf with my buddies, where I see the larger difference is from the fairway.  I'm up to two clubs shorter (at 150, I'm more comfortable with an easy 6-iron, where most of my friends are hitting 8-iron).  That's OK, because I feel I can still compete from that distance.  It's worse at 180, where I'm hitting a 3-hybrid and they hit 5-iron.  So even though I know my preference, my friends always play the longer tees. Their handicaps are a bit lower, so I'm thinking I can offer to play scratch, but move up a tee.  How do others handle this?

That’s what I’m used to, but it’s usually better to verify with rangefinders.

That is interesting....I generally like to play from tees that are 5700 yds. to 6000 yds.  According to your numbers, 28 X 210=5880

If two balls are 145 yards away, but you will use a 9-iron, and the woman who played from the reds and is standing next to you needs a 6-iron, she is not right there with you. It is not a level playing field unless your two tee shots go to spots where both of you need a 9-iron, or a 6-iron, to get home.

What tees you use should not be determined by the length of your drives, though that is a good guideline, but by what clubs you hit into the green. My suggestion to the OP is that if you have to hit a long iron (or equivalent hybrid iron) into a par 4 more than twice per side, those tees are probably too long for you.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a standard color system for Tee Boxes?  I lived in Long Island, NY for 75 years.  (I am only here in Texas 6 months)  On Long Island, I found most courses where I played to be Blue, White, Red. however, there is every variation (Both color and number) that you can imagine.  Here in Texas, the course that I play now is Black, Blue, White, Red.  So, The white down here is your gold up there, and I agree with what you do, as I do the same.  It really depends on the traffic.  

I think courses up here on Long Island only started adding the gold tee over the last few years. When I first started playing there were no gold tees.
