Simple version is that any club that you don't hit well should stay at home. What is well? that is up to you and your goals. What to do about it? If you want to score better, stick with clubs you can hit well consistently. If breaking 80 is important get fit or get lessons, which ever leads to hitting longer clubs better.

Cant hit a 3W to save my life. No longer own one. I hit my 5W pretty decent. Thing is i always find myself wondering if i should get a cheapo one to experiment with.

I don't carry a 3-wood.   I do carry a 5-wood, and I hit it really well both off the ground and off a tee.  But lately, even when I hit it well,  I find that if I could have just gotten 10 or 15 more yards, it would have been really nice.   My 5-wood launches very high, so I think I'm not getting much roll.   So I'm thinking of getting out my 3-wood and trying it.

It's kind of strange, though, that anyone would say they can hit a 5 wood but they can't hit a 3 wood.  If it's the shaft length that is making the difference, why not just choke up an inch on the 3 wood?  It'd be like hitting a 5 wood with less loft.

Loft matters. If you don't generate a lot of clubhead speed (or don't feel confident enough to do this with this type of shot), 20% more loft and smaller head (sometimes) can be just what you need to pop the ball up and get enough carry. It will also go straighter if side spin is  imparted too.

I love my 3W. I tee off with it almost every hole because I’m way too inconsistent with a driver. If I need a “fairway wood” though, my go to club is the 4H.

my get up and go musta got up and went..

I am exclusively using my 3 Wood until I re-shaft my driver:) I think its important to find a fairway wood that is most versatile for your game. If you have better results with a 4w then by all means!
