MOI practicality?

So I was looking at reviews for the new Ping G400 driver with its crazy MOI which approaches 10k. 

I currently have the fairly new Ping G that I bought new early last year I think. The MOI is closer to 5600.

There's obviously a big difference there, but I'm not sure at what point the numbers become irrelevant. My point being, assuming an MOI of 5500 may be a huge practical advantage over one of 4K (just throwing out hypothetical numbers), would there be a linear correlation to the practical differences between one of 8k and one of 9500? At some point are those differences not of practical significance?

I hope that question makes sense.

I'd guess it's one of them diminishing return kind of deals.  There is only so far from the center you can get before it don't work out worth a flip.  And I wonder if a real high MOI don't affect the closing rate to where it gets to being a problem all by itself.  Like you; I suspect there is a limit.  Maybe somebody else got a better answer.

Hit the center of the face and the MOI doesn't matter at all.

So no, it's not really linear… it's a bit more complex than that.

I assumed it wasn't linear; I guess the purpose behind my question is at what point does the MOI increases have no added practical advantages...in other words, is it worth spending money on a driver with double the MOI?  

I realize your answer will be to hit the club better, but for sake of argument, for a guy who plays 12-15 rounds/yr, would that be helpful or not really?

Not really an answerable question. I don't know how often - or where - you mis-hit the ball, etc.

Hit the clubs and find out. That's the best advice you'll ever get, because it's true.

I think it is all hype. They have to say something to attract people to buy their latest driver. The Ping G driver is a great driver, I have one, (I also have other drivers as well), I would not spend any more money for a Ping G400, regardless of the claims on MOI.

Eh I wouldn't say it's ALL hype since MOI is a quantifiable property, however I will agree that it's something to get people to try it out.  As previously alluded to, in the end the most forgiving club is the one you hit best.  Launch monitors don't show MOI next to your carry, spin rate, and launch angle numbers.

MOI is important in that it helps the clubhead resist twisting on off-center hits.

I am not sure what the real-world differences would be in the incremental increases between models or comparing to other clubs.

      While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).

      Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.

      No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
