What misplayed shots (not tee shots, chips or putts, but the resulting ball trajectory) do you find the most frustrating? In my Trap Five post this week, I list my top five most frustrating afflictions (and I find the shank far more frustrating than any other result of a golf swing). Do you agree or are there others that you find more frustrating?

Definately leaving it in the sand. Especially when the ball is deep in the sand. Your bust your ass lifting it out, when all the sand clears, its still there. ouch!

Shank...

Worst experience I was 1 under through 3 holes...

1st shot ....Came up way short on the par 3 fourth hole, hit it FAT off the tee box about 20 yards short.

2nd shot ...sandwedge shanked to the right, now about 15 yards or so off the green pin high.

3rd shot ...sandwedge shanked to the right, still about 12-15 yards off the green, behind the green.

I look at my foursome and say "fellers looks like I am going to circle this green, might want to stand behind me, I have no idea where this next shot is going"

4th shot ...use my pea sized brain, take out a hybrid and run it up on the green through the rough.

2 putt for a nice 6.

The most frustrating shot in golf is definitely a shot for me which I usually can play with closed eyes but failed to make it right!

For example, if you have a real easy chip from the fringe with the pw and you hit it to fat so that the ball just goes a few feet instead of close to the flag.

I think the most frustrating is the Yips or the sudden missing of short 'gimme' putts. 'Chunks' is the problem I have dealt with the most in the last couple years, though. I'm a pretty good straight driver but tend to chunk a lot of iron shots (especially wedges and short irons). At times this has made me want to give it up, but nothing gives me as bad a feeling as missing 3-4 foot putts. Once the misses start, they just seem to continue. I've had a couple rounds that I was really thinking of just selling my clubs and taking up lawn darts.

Right now, it is chunking my 60*.
You have this beautiful vision of the ball landing within 3 feet of the pin and stopping dead and then THUD..its a killer.
But I have also chipped them in with my 60 and left several within inches. Its a fatal attraction.

Duck hook off the tee. When it's really bad I can't even get a ball in play because I'll duck hook every one of them OB.

Close second is any putt you leave short but perfectly on line. If only I'd hit it, I would have made it...

I have to go with the chunked chip. You are so close to the whole, just get it up, let it roll ou a little, and you are left with a gimme put. Then you hit behind the ball and don't even get it on the green, so you are left with the almost exact same shot.

For me the shank. It is just so demoralizing, and not always simple to figure out, since a number of different errors can lead to the shanks.

When it comes to one single shot, it's the short wedge shot into a green after hitting a perfect tee shot. I am the King of Blown Drives. It almost seems inevitable that after I bomb one down the middle on a short par 4, I proceed to pull/push/shank/chunk/skull/insert other mallady the following shot.

As for the bigger picture, for me it's a slice. There are actually a few reasons I picked it. Number one, it's the most common problem I will run into in my game. It can screw up a round because often times it results in 3 on the tee. I also picked it because it can become a mental thing. if I start fighting my driver, it changes the whole round.

Second for me would be missing a short putt. The first one is no big deal, but if you miss a second one then it just increases the pressure for each consecutive shot.

For me, the lip out is it. The others are the result of a poorly executed shot, but the lip out, defying the laws of gravity, is just the golf games looking down and laughing at you. It almost as bad as hitting a sprinkler head or trap rake.

For me, it is definately the dreaded shanks . I usually have a good idea as to what I am doing wrong when the other things happen but with the shanks it is so elusive for me.

I shank occasionally, but its always cause my body is so far ahead of the swing that the the club winds up way open

I'd say chunk.

I usually chunk the ball when the grass is wet, and i am chipping from a distance of less than 50 yard. It's so frustrating, because you just know that if the ground had been a little harder, you would have just had a perfect shot. And it's even more frustrating when you chunk it a second or third time right after that!

Thanks giantbear, any input I get on the shanks I will take into consideration.

I voted the shank; hate that feeling, but even more so standing over the next shot, which is usually similar to the one you shanked, and saying to yourself, 'Don't shank this damn thing'. I know Rotella would have us not think about the last, but the shank is a tough one to shake, at least for me.

The most frustrating result is having a putt lip out, especially a par putt. Nothing is more frustrating that scrambling for a par putt, lining it up and having it lip out.

Second worst is my biggest achilles: chipping from the greenside rough. Either I slow down and chunk it or miss my spot and watch it roll...and roll...and roll past the cup. If I could just get better, I would eliminate three strokes per round. It's a mental thing. One of the goals for 2008: get better.
