Rory has lost twice now to a guy with a similar handicap as Romo BTW.

Are you saying someone in the WGC Match Play has a handicap similar to a +0.3?

Because the two players he lost to are currently #22 and #63 in the OWGR, and the "worst" player in the field is #72. TST (or at least certain posters) live on hyperbole.

Jeff Knox. He is the amateur who they stick with you at the Masters if you are a single. He lost two him paired up during the tournament and again recently during a practice round. He is a very good player that 3 put would refer to a hack.

You do know that tour pro's handicaps are -5 to -6? You claim to be a 2. I think you'd be lucky to break 85 under this pressure on this course from these tees.

I wouldn't want to watch it.

Your point?

I think Tony Romo should enter every event he qualifies for.  My problem with this is that he didn't qualify for it.  IMO sponsor's exemptions should be given to guys who are currently, or on a path to, making their living playing golf.   In his case he is taking a spot that would otherwise have gone to such a person.  They don't bring in novelty guys to play in NFL games, and I don't think the PGA should allow it in golf.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Well, in this case the sponsor probably gave him an exemption because no one would have even known there was another tournament going on this weekend had he not. Remember the sponsors want to get people to watch and pay attention. Some no name guy trying to make his way onto the tour does nothing to get people to watch.

77 in a PGA Tour event is crap.

No, it isn't. Not for a 0.3 index. Or a +0.3.

3 hours ago, 3jacker said:

And I am skeptical of the +0.3 number, yes.

The course rating is 76.9. He played to his handicap, which you're only supposed to do about 1/4 to 1/5 of the time.

77 in a tour event is good for an amateur, for sure.  I still don't have any desire to see someone play at that level.  I can do that myself!

Highly, highly unlikely.

You do understand how course ratings work, right? If you played to your handicap index, you should shoot 79 to 80. And that's just something you should do 1/4 to 1/5 of the time.

To the actual topic, I have no problem with Tony playing in the event. It served the role of the sponsors - to get more people talking about/interested in the event.

Does anyone know how he's playing today? I'm assuming he's in the late wave since he teed off so early yesterday.  EDIT. Just looked it up. Not well. 8 over thru 9.

I don't care that it's good for his skill level.  That's not the point.  Otherwise folks would tune in to watch 12 handicappers shoot 86.  Who wants to do that?

Based on your argument, I could do it 1 time out of 5.  So I COULD do it!! Yay.

Actually you are a 2 handicap so shooting a score like 77 there is more like 1 time out of 23. Throw in the extra pressure and I would bet my house you couldn't break 80.

You're not a celebrity. He is. He's likely doing exactly what the sponsors wanted. Clue: it wasn't to be competitive. It was to attract attention. As of right now we have more posts in this topic than in the WGC Match Play topic.

1 in 23 still means I can do it!!

How exciting that would be for everyone to watch.

Well probably not a lot less exciting than watching Xinjun Zhang shoot 10 under. These opposite field events are not all that thrilling to begin with. At least Tony Romo shooting 100 garners a headline or two.

For me - ME, that's all I'm speaking for - the fact that he's a celebrity doesn't make it watchable.

Why is that unacceptable to you guys?

That part is not unacceptable.

But you called him a hack, when he played to his handicap, and people objected to that.

And then people shared reasons why Tony is playing over someone who would shoot 73/72 and miss the cut anyway.

Got it - Knox is a whole different case than Romo, likely better than a 0.3 and playing his home course. So lots of local knowledge.

Doesn't really matter because Romo is going to finish DFL, by 5 or more strokes.
The sponsor, however, got everything they wanted out of offering him an exemption {publicity}

Knox would probably shoot like Romo on this track in Punta Cana.
