Just got into golf last summer and I'm looking to buy a new 3 wood. Ideally, it would be a more forgiving club since I'm a bogey golfer. I'm willing to spend anywhere from 100-200 dollars. Wondering if you guys have any thoughts on what the best 3 wood would be that can be found in that price range new OR used.

I hit Cobra woods, (I carry a 3 and a 5). I really like them and they can be had for a good price. But, as everyone on the site says, go to a store and try them out. I hear good things about the Cobra F7. Talk to the sales rep, you may be able to find a wood with an offset which would help if you fade the ball to the right.

I have a mizuno jpx 900 3 wood that I can adjust +/- 2°. It's really to hit poorly. I also have the cobra f7 seven wood. Both are adjustable and easy to hit. I got both at around 150 brand new but they were deals. Now they are selling under 2 bills easily. Best bet is to hit a super store and find what pleases your eye and you should be good.

Don't know about much of the newer stuff, but the Cobra F7 line is very good as is the Tour Edge Exotics EX10. I would personally go 4-wood instead of 3-wood though because it's easier to hit.

I'm starting to think you are a tour edge shill... You might have to start paying sponsorship...🤔😁

Yes, 4 wood may be a better choice. 16.5 degrees. Even some Pro's carry 4 woods instead of 3 woods. More forgiving and almost same distance.

I love my Tour Edge Exotics  CB2 (15*) with Fujikura R-flex shaft.  The head is a little smaller and therefore I love it; I can hit it off the deck easily and work the ball both ways if I have to.   Cheers.

@TheDukester I have an Adams Tight Lies Ti 3wood with the Bassara shaft. Very fun to hit and easy to launch with its shallow face and lightweight shaft. It's also quite cheap on eBay (~$50).

You can watch a review of it here.

Best 3w all around out there in my opinion.  I use the 3 and the 5.  The smaller profile helps me get the ball higher on the face with some shaft lean to get a higher launch with less spin OFF THE GROUND.  Amazing fairway woods.  You can find longer ones off a tee, but if you have trouble hitting woods off the turf even if you have some shaft lean, you can't go wrong here.  I use them off the deck no problem and off the tee (barely off the ground).  And...they're inexpensive on ebay.

The Callaway XR if you can find them are likely in the $100 range, and the XR16 below $200. I think the Steelhead XR released last summer is also now in the $200 range. I have an XR and love it, but I am likely going to buy a Rogue. The Rogue is around $299. If you will spend $200, I think the extra $99 is worth it. Even at my level, I can feel the difference in the way the ball comes off the face.

The Titleist 917 series is dropping in price, and will likely drop more towards the end of summer, as the 919 series will probably be out in October.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
