I have been watching Lee Trevino about exempt spots ans agree, 125 is too many spots how about going back to the old way,"exempt top 60" Give the up and coming guys a chance to play.

I disagree.

Look at who is 61-125 now. Many of them deserve to play on.

I could see switching it up to 100, but back when there were only 60, probably 20% as many people in the U.S. alone played golf, let alone the rest of the world.

Yeah, umm have to disagree with you on this one. Too much talent on tour to only have 60 keep their cards. Have you looked at the standings, you would be sending Matt Kuchar and several other stars back to the Web.com finals. Maybe in Trevino's day when the fields were much weaker this would work, not on today's tour though.

I'd like to see the top 60 exempt, with the rest of the field number having to play a Monday/Tuesday qualifier. Heck, even just a one day, Monday qualifier would be better than nothing.

Those golfers earning their way on in the qualifier would be playing pretty good golf, and would give those exempt boys better competition. It would certainly cull out those who are not playing well during that week's tournament.

Not that I think 60 is the right number, but many of the players in the top 125 do so with a limited schedule. Lowering the number of exempt slots to something like 75 would significantly increase the events played by the players in positions 65-100.

Players play, tough players win!

I think 125 is fine. The talent pool today is so much deeper than it was in Trevinos day. They're are guys not the web tour that could probably make the top 60 on the money list in back when he played.

Back in these days, there were actually more than 60 exempt players. tournament winners from the previous year were exempt if not in the top 60 money winners, and major champions usually received a lifetime exemption from having to qualify, so the number of exempt players may have been as many as 100 at any one time..

Anyone know the last time a 75-125 ranked player won a tournament with most of the top 60  playing? Got to be a stat on that some where.

It's one round. Small sample size. I completely disagree that the Monday qualifiers would be necessarily "playing good golf." They played ONE round of good golf, often on a golf course very different than the one hosting the PGA Tour stop.

And… players aren't going to travel to try to just Monday qualify.

It happens kinda often, considering how you're taking away a good chunk of the field. Majors in the past decade have been won by players ranked outside the top 74.

    • Hi @RetiredOldMan!  I am glad to see you are still playing and having good scores.  I hope that when I am 79, I am not only able to play, but still able to produce as good scores as you have been doing.   I look forward to hearing more of your success and your opinion of the senior flex shafts.
    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.
