So higher handicaps, do you play in your non flighted club championships? If you do with little chance of winning, do you do it for other reasons? What are your reasons for not playing if you dont?

Depends on what you call higher handicaps. When I was still in the Netherlands, I played a club with a lot of players with 6 or better handicaps (up to +). First time I entered the strokeplay championship I was a 10 and did not stand a chance. But scored an 81 at the first round, so I showed my potential.

Next year I was chosen for the senior competition team, but did not play a single competition match because the captain said I was not good enough. Later that year I was the only senior player to make the cut on the strokeplay championship (after 36 holes). This was my goal and my revenge. No chance of winning, but the best in my category. To be honest, that category did not exist at that time.

Hell yea!  Why?  Just to play.  I could play everyday if this job thing didnt get in the way.  I played in ours this year with no chance of winning but just to play, meet some new people and get outside for more golf!

Why would you not flight a club championship?

I probably would play if only because I would want to play my round of golf anyway and to help support the club in general. But I'd also be bending some ears to get it into proper flights for the next year.

I joined a club earlier this year, and played in the club championship 2 weeks ago. I had no chance of winning. My reason for playing was that I am new to this club, and saw it as an opportunity to meet more of the members,. and ,make myself better known to the established members.. The same reason I started playing in the weekly Wednesday afternoon scrambles. The long tern objective is to  get into a regular game. I managed to finish tied for dead last with a 23 handicap. That will never happen again.

I always played. Never won. I usually came in around a 10 handicap. There were always a few folks who would be around scratch.

Our club had a huge dinner and stuff along with the tournament. It was a pretty great social event as well.

I also kind of like it as a judge of just where my game is.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I have never been a member of a club,  but I would play in a non-flighted tournament in a heartbeat! The pressure would be challenging and fun.

Do you? And your reasons?

I have played in our City's championship for 28 years and would have whether it was flighted or not.  I never have had a chance to win but have always enjoyed competing with all the other "losers" who are lucky to break 80.  I always think of this event as one of my majors.

At the same time, I play in a lot of handicapped/Net tournaments where I do have a chance to win.  I don't want to always be a non-competitive field-filler.

I did last year because I like to see good golf played on the same holes I play regularly.I wasnt able to this year.

I voted no.  If there are no flights and your handicap has two digits, you're wasting your money playing.

I’m surprised that they allow it. Seems like you’re potentially taking away spots for players who can compete?

However, if you like it, I don’t see why not? But I wouldn’t.
