Ok ,first of all don't laugh. My 90 year old father, (who has passed recently) decided to paint his spider putter Head with a brush. What is the easiest and best way to strip the head. He also painted the face.😖

I would try different solvents like paint thinner, rubbing alcohol or acetone to see which one works best.

I would use a wire brush wheel on a bench setup or with a drill.
Place the drill on a bench and have someone hold it securely.
Various brush stiffness are available and the brush should remove the paint in most areas.
A little touch up may be required in areas the brush can not be used.

You can get a small, portable sandblaster for less than $50.  Probably the easiest, most effective, and least damaging method...

I'd try acetone or some other kind of paint thinner first, unless you want to strip it down to the bare metal, in which case brush away. Don't forget to wear eye protection. Wire wheels  can fling tiny pieces of wire everywhere.

Totally agree with the acetone. Just some on a q tip will take most paint off if it's only a small amount. If it's more, then a shop towel will work. This way you don't damage the finish unless you really rub the acetone with a more abrasive towel. Wouldn't do wire or sand unless last resort because you will probably be refinishing the club at the end of that process.

My understanding was that the OP wanted to completely strip the putter in order to refinish.

If that’s not the case, then sandblasting would be inappropriate.

  • iacas changed the title to How Strip Paint From Putter Head
(edited)

I've used citristip to strip paint fill from my Ping ie1 irons.  Sold at any hardware store.

in fact, I'd check the hardware store before you start with the wire wheels etc... You paint this stuff on and let it sit.  Then wash it off.  Might take a few times but seriously, hit up the hardware store paint dept.

    • I have a Titleist one that I use with my electric trolley. Fits perfectly on there and I don't care about the weight because I'm not carrying it or pushing it. I have room for everything I could need and when it's hot I have plenty of room for lots of water.
    • Quick question for you. If you had Tiger Woods hit all of your full shots and you just did the chipping, putting and sand shots what do you think your handicap would be?
    • So yesterday I happened to find myself in a Play-It-Again sports and they had that very Cobra Staff Bag for $150.00.  It looked to be in perfect or near-perfect condition. I immediately wondered if the guy I saw using it on Wednesday had hocked it at Play-It-Again. 😁
    • See you Saturday at Reserve Run.  I have to confess, even thought it's a long way out. I'm pretty excited about next year end of April. The tournament I play every year for the better part of 2 decades is moving to Paiute Golf Club in Las Vegas. We'll get to use The Wolf and Sun Mountain courses for our tournament and get to do the Horserace on The Snow Mountain Course. I'm already looking forward to it.
    • OH MY GOSH!!! I feel your pain!  The Wednesday League I play in has done it that way forever. (So did the Monday Night league I tried for a couple of years.) I have no idea why. Makes me crazy! Especially since they have a modified local rule which was designed for exactly that purpose! Personally, I don't do it. It hasn't happened to me very much, only once that I can think of, but when it did I demanded to be given a two stroke penalty. They wouldn't give it to me. So, I went all the way back and replayed the shot with a one stroke penalty. The guys I found on the tee box thought I was an insane person... maybe I am.  But, Man, the rules are the rules and it's not even complicated or confusing.
