Bad ruling!! He puts his putter on the ground next to the ball...and it doesn't move. He lifts his putter up off the ground...and it doesn't move. A full two seconds later he takes a small step forward to address the ball, and while hovering the putter it does move. If you are trying to convince an intelligent person that the practice stroke is what caused it to move you will fail. A slight movement of the ball doesn't follow from an action that occurred two seconds in the past. This conclusion requires a leap of faith that runs counter to natural physics. In fact the last thing Dustin does before the ball moves is when he takes the small step forward to address the ball. So maybe the USGA or its defenders on here want to change their collective stance to say that he should be penalized because it was his stepping into the address position that caused enough ground shift to move the ball. Fine, but that just means Oakmont is such a crappy and patently unfair golf course that the mere act of standing next to your golf ball to putt it carries a random possibility that the ground underneath will give way and cost you a penalty stroke. Is that where we're at?

Dustin Johnson Helped by USGA's Bungled Ruling
Tee2Trees replied to david_wedzik's topic in Tour Talk
What's the prevailing theory on how DJ caused his ball to move? In the replay it appears he is merely hovering his putter when the ball oscillates backwards away from the hole, indicating the movement was caused by wind/gravity/growing grass, etc. Also DJ confirms that he does not touch ball or ground, as shown in the replay.- 44 replies

Difference in These Putters Besides Price?
Tee2Trees replied to 9wood's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Really? For starters, Speith's Cameron has a heavier headweight than a Knight putter. It probably has a heavier shaft in it as well. Also the SS grip on Speith's putter is about $40 vs the $2 grip on your Knight. Finally the Cameron is constructed of a more expensive grade of stainless steel than the Knight and it has a milled face to ensure flatness and improve feel. These are just the performance differences. Then there are the aesthetics, the ability to find another one like it should the need arise (cheap off-brand putters are all one-of-a-kind and not in a good way) and finally, about $3300 worth of provenance. -
Home course is Bridges in Madison, WI and it is pretty challenging from the tips. It is built on marshland with numerous ponds and tall foliage so fairway misses can be extremely penal. A few of the par 4's are cupcakes but then there are a couple that measure 450+ yds. Two of the par 5's are 590 yds and two of the par 3s are 190 yds. Hole #10 gives the player an option of a 250 yd carry into a medium-width fairway with OB on both sides, or a 210 yd layup that leaves 190 yd to the green. I think anyone can be tested at this course, pro or otherwise.

I avoid the winn dri-tacs. They feel good at first but they wear fast and get mushy. Pro golfers prefer a firmer grip for control. GP Tour velvet, Lamkin ace, and GP New Decade are all good examples of firm grips with widespread usage. Also consider ribbed vs round and midsize vs standard.

Believe me I have studied the weights at length as well. Nothing is lighter than the Cleveland XL270/Altitude/CG Black. Cobra Long Tom is similarly light, even the Cobra Amp Cell is abnormally light with a 190g head. The Ping G25 and newer G drivers have extra weight built into the head (206g) that is offset by a counterbalanced shaft -- this seems to work as I am also able to hit my 100 mph max with the G25. Most clubfitters would probably agree that if I can swing a slightly shorter&heavier setup at the same speed it is probably the way to go. I just want to know if anyone else has had the same experience where ~44.5" and say, 290 grams, gives the same swing speed for them as any of the longer/lighter setups.
-
I have found that my swing speed reaches a maximum of 100 mph with a 44.5" driver. Anything longer than that doesn't help. I tried a 48" Cobra Long Tom once and could only swing it 95 mph. Has anyone else tried this experiment? It is important to make sure club weight is the same across the test for a fair comparison (although the long tom was actually a bit lighter). This bugs me because most "game improvement" drivers I feel I should be playing have this unnecessary extra length built into the stock setup. Thus I end up using, and getting best results with, "players drivers" like the Adams Fast 12 LS, Ping i-series, Titleist, or old-school Cobra, Nike, etc. I have even tried shaft-swapping with both Cobra and Ping (pro shaft in GI head) and it just doesn't seem to work for improving contact. I guess I should be satisfied as any 440cc+ head is miles more forgiving than the older stuff, but the industry game-improvement "standard" still bugs me.

Nice Deal on Ping Eye 2's Blue Dot
Tee2Trees replied to cardcollecta12's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
They are worth about $100. Could be more if they have good grips. Most people like the Eye2+ soles and lofts better despite the shallower grooves, but they all command around the same money. Enjoy your new sticks! -
PING Eye 2s Are the Best Irons Ever Created
Tee2Trees replied to famousdavis's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Ping Zing 2's for me! They work as well or better as anything else I've owned, and I never felt the need to own Eye 2's (although I hit them well in a simulator one time). -
what is your go to shot from 100 yards in the fairway?
Tee2Trees replied to onthehunt526's topic in Golf Talk
I hit a full 50-degree to 100 yards as well. No I don't "flight" it, yes it balloons high in the air, no it doesn't spin back, and yes I can hit it that distance in light wind every time assuming clean contact. -
I figured it would be Adam Scott or Bubba winning this thing. I think Scott has a better chance of putting well with his new stroke so I went with him at -15 for the contest. Spieth I'm afraid may have "lost" it. He will still be good, but not the magician we have seen. After so much success at such a young age, just the slight bit of nerves coming from having your confidence shaken is all it takes to bring you back to earth -- forever. It happens to them all eventually. I don't get all of this "big three" talk coming from the TV broadcasts (Day, Spieth, McIlroy). Bubba, for one, has had more recent success than McIlroy, to say nothing of Fowler and Scott.

Golf Club Hoarder?
Tee2Trees commented on onthehunt526's blog entry in Journey to the Center of the Green
Honestly I expected to see more. Only four drivers? I realized I had the same problem a couple of years ago so I decided to organize them all into distinct "bags" and buy more clubs to fill out each complete "set" (and tees, balls, gloves, etc.). Now all my clubs and gear are arranged into six distinct sets that are ready to hit the course at any moment. This way I figure if I need to pare it down in a hurry I can unload them 14 at a time through craigslist. Problem is, I can't imagine letting any of the six bags go quite yet! I also have the TEE CU AW and like it quite a bit. I'm tempted to pick up the rest of the set but then I'd have to sell another 4-PW to keep things balanced. For you, how do the CU's rank among your other irons? -
I'm starting to think he really did sneak onto the forbidden "employees only" floor and take a trophy. BTW, check out the blurb from the outfit that arranges these tours abroad: Young Pioneer Tours is an adventure travel company formed in 2008 and based in mainland China. Specialising in travel to North Korea, we are an adventure tour operator that provides “budget tours to destinations your mother would rather you stayed away from”.

Why not steel in shorter hybrids?
Tee2Trees replied to onthehunt526's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Drivers, fairways, and hybrids are designed with a headweight that is compatible with a graphite shaft and its bend characteristics. If you want to use a steel shaft in any of these clubs, you are going to need to increase the headweight. There is no profit in it for the OEMs to offer this option, but you can always do it yourself. -
Almost every pro golfer has a 300 yard stick. I'm guessing the euro tour has wider fairways or less trouble near the landing zone so the guys are able to hit driver more often over there.
-
This is actually the recommended alignment for hitting driver according to Ben Hogan. A little closed is OK, but he also points the lead foot out a bit. That small detail may help you square up at impact.
-
I humbly suggest buying the Adams A3OS 6 hybrid-iron, at 28 degrees and 38" length. they made a ton of these as demo clubs so you can still find them new on the 'bay for $15-$20.

Graham DeLaet is now one of my favorite golfers. Such a pure ball-striker and he putts about as well as I do. One of those players that leaves you in awe but still lets you think you could beat him on your home course if you happen to make a few putts. And the beard is alright -- it just makes people jealous, I guess.

Super Stroke mid-slim 2.0 is the business. I use a Vardon grip for putting (and all other shots).

You are likely "trying too hard" and as a result releasing the wrists early. This gives you your 96-97 mph during your downswing but causes speed loss at impact. Think about maintaining your wrist angle as you pull the handle down and then snap the wrists through the hitting zone.

How do you precisely measure opening the club face?
Tee2Trees replied to brg1875's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Ping Dylagrip offers this but they stopped making them in the 1980s!
