  1. Yup. It's not as if by dreaming of becoming a pro golfer as a young person you forego all hope of selling insurance or building houses if you change course.
  2. I guess if you can't hit em, shine em.
  3. I think it's the idiot who voluntarily put himself in this disadvantaged situation. Which wouldn't be the golf course/club.
  4. I've played Colonial and Sawgrass. Colonial is cool - old school, very well thought out. TPC at Sawgrass is garish and unoriginal to me. Gimmicky. But hard.
  5. How about this: It's easier to hit a long drive on the course. It's also easier to hit a short drive on the course. As it applies to Tour golf on TV, these guys are often hitting to a downslope knowing they'll get a huge bump. And they're good enough to do it. They're not a bunch of 15 handicaps randomly bumping it off mounds and soggy patches at the local club. Put another way: It's easier to hit a ball 340 yds on a golf course with favorable conditions than on a launch monitor. On a monitor (that's properly calibrated and set up) you have to earn every bit of it.
  6. Closest recent scandal that compares in scope and impact on the sport is Rickie Fowler's pornstache.
  7. I really admired how modern-day corporate-speak those Grupo Salinas commercials were. Told you all about how socially concscious they were but didn't say a damn thing about what they were or what they do. Other than foster diversity and inclusivity and stuff. But thanks for the link on the NLU podcast - this should be interesting. Now they need to land Gary McCord next.
  8. Because the Tour that happened in reality is the PGA Tour, it is good for golf in the sense that it brought more interest in the sport and gave some sort of indication as to how the game is supposed to be played. God knows average folks would have never had an inkling left to their own devices. I don't think it's the best version of itself, but it is the best we have and the benefits to the game far outweigh the shortfalls the Tour seems to have.
  9. That is true, but beside the point. We were talking about long drives. Not short ones - those rarely get mentioned on TV (or in real life either!).
  10. I'm a decent player, have been around golf all my life and I have never seen a serious player use iron covers or "wax their woods." Good lord. Club Pro Guy is a parody but not an exaggeration.
  11. I was reluctant to try spikeless for a very long time. Finally tried some and they've become my primary choice. They can slip, but have rarely. And the new designs are much better at maximizing traction. I have some Adidas Code Chaos coming in this Thurs, accordingly to Amazon.. so it's virtually a lock that a 64 is in store for the weekend. They are far more comfortable on and (especially) off the grass.
  12. I tried them last year. I liked (loved) hitting the 4 iron. Definitely produced a more penetrating flight that needed a little setup change to recover the height I want but even making these adjustments it felt like hitting a comfortable 7. It was really fun, couldn't put it down. The short irons felt very odd to me. Those would take some work to get used to. I can see using a set where the 4,5,6 were the length of a 6 iron and rest were graduated normally. Since I'm a decent ball-striker that has learned with a varying length (traditional) set, I don't think that would be a big deal. To someone newer at the game, it would likely defeat the intent of a truly same-length set.
  13. Sure, but that's not what I was saying at all. It's my money, it's my club, and they are guests. I wouldn't hesitate the play thru a group that was that far out of time. I wouldn't try to sneak past them though, I'd advise them as to why we were already on the tee when they returned from the snack shack. I wouldn't hold it against them for the rest of eternity. I'd just play through. I might even tell them to have a nice day as I drove off.
  14. Because they are golf clubs, not collectible figurines. If used properly, they will smash into a hard plastic/rubber ball thousands of times, violently. They will be smashed into the ground - turf, sand, mud... they might even be sent downrange once or twice depending on a person's temperament. Golf clubs should be used, not presented as a piece of art. They are just chunks of steel. When they are worn out, buy new ones. I bought a pair of brand new gunmetal vokeys last month. First thing I did with the 60* was take it into a bunker and start (gasp) splashing it thru the sand. Horrific what it did to the patina.
  15. Members should take preference above guests at all times. You should have advised them that you were playing thru at the 9th tee. If they complained about it to the pro, he should have advised them they are welcome to not come back. I wouldn't pay membership dues to a place that doesn't put members first.
  16. This. It truly does not matter.
  17. Much easier to hit super long drives on the golf course than on a monitor, generally. Monitors don't have downhill, downwind, or slopes and humps on fairways that can really add to rollout.
  18. Theme song from "What's Happening?" TV show. I once read that Bobby Jones, "the squire himself," once said that you should hear a song in your head to help establish a good rhythm. Then my addled brain immediately thought of this and I can't stop.
  19. I'd lose my longest wood (excl driver). That varies depending on where I'm playing, between 3w and 4w. I have a 2 iron that is nearly as long. It would definitely be a club at the long end of the set.
  20. Here's a hint on how to find the sweet spot on Tiger Wood's putter. Look for the wear mark. Case closed. Nothing you speculate matters. Don't question it. Accept that he is far more knowledge and self-aware of his golf game than you are. Don't be delusional. Stop.
  21. Good Lord. The things some folks will do. Playing with a frankengrip to fix a frankenswing is like fixing a flat front left tire to even out the flat front right tire.
  22. Golf pros have been manhandling and putting students in positions for ever. This is the same thing, just a lot more efficient at it. People sure hate innovation sometimes. FTR, I love the "small details here and there" causing the ballooning of a handicap by 20 strokes. I'm using that joke btw.
  23. My coach told me my problem is that I'm an idiot but not a big enough one to be incredibly good (like DJ, Brooks). And not smart enough to either (Tiger, Jack, Hogan). I'm stuck in the mediocre middle.
  24. Tour is doing their best to protect their brand. They have to work with the players they've got.
  25. Sometimes truth comes in an offensive format.
