What exactly did John Daly do wrong?

First off I'm not really interested in defending the guy given his track record. But looking at things objectively, he hit the wrong ball in the bunker, was frustrated and made a silly 3 putt. Goes on to the next hole and has a tin cup moment, hitting 5 or so balls in the water. Then realizing that he was out of golf balls, he kinda had no choice but to withdraw. Now he's been uninvited to the next tournament. What else could he have done at that point?

I think it is just a compounding of his recent behaviors.  He isn't acting very professional and the Aussie Tour doesn't need to invite him.

A tournament official said that he could have had someone get him more of his brand of balls easily enough, had he wanted to continue.  Sounds like he just quit on the tournament.  Assuming that he receives appearance money, why should he ever be invited back?

He did not only hit the wrong ball, he was in the wrong bunker (ball was in the back greenside bunker, he hit his first out of the front bunker).

And I am pretty sure, that he was well aware how many balls he had left and dunked them on purpose. The rules officals would have given him new balls if he had asked for (see this link with the quote: http://espn.go.com/golf/story/_/id/7214927/john-daly-called-unprofessional-walking-off ).

If this was a first offense, things would be different.

Unfortunately it's offense #73, give or take a few.

I didn't think he dunked the balls on purpose, but I guess it wouldn't be that surprising. So I guess it's just a culmination of his past actions. Definitely sad on his part.

Unfortunately for John, he has been on a roller coaster ride his whole life making poor decisions and living life on his terms.   When it has caught up to him he makes a comeback and because he is such a train wreck he gets a lot of support from people who want to see him turn around.  He is really running on empty and is running out of support.  It is hard to watch, but the doors are shutting on his life.  Many are learning the hard way what Ely Callaway learned when he signed Daly more than as decade ago with the no alcohol clause.  John is going to do what John wants to do.  Winning 2 majors could have been the best thing to ever happen to him or it could have been the worst as it was his ticket to continue his self destruction.   I sincerely wish the guy the best, but he is the one who has to want it.

I'd be pretty upset after climbing into the wrong bunker setting up and then swatting a great shot to be informed......Your ball is in the other bunker.....WHY wasn't he told prior to his playing the wrong ball.  He goes from 4 ft birdie putt to a double bogey made into a triple by a 3jack.  I'd be more than a tad PO'd too.  Not sure his first or second shot into lake on his 2nd hole was intentional.  But given his explosive nature, after the first hole bungling by him and the staff assigned to that hole the rest was predictable.  He is John Daly and like it or not he is a story.

Why wasn't he told? No. That's not how golf works.

Why didn't he verify that it was his ball, as was his responsibility, prior to playing it? That's the question.

How the heck do you hit wrong the wrong ball out of a bunker?? Did he not LOOK at the ball before he hit it? That mistake is 100% his responsibility.

As I've said before on this forum, John Daly is a pity feening person and the people who continue to give him chances need to stop.

It's quite possible his ball was partially buried with the logo in the sand. You can't pick up the ball from a hazard to verify it's yours. The again it might have a typical Daly moment. I feel bad for him. I thought he had his act together the last year or so in this regard.

You can't, but Rule 12 allows you to identify it:

Quote: http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Rule-12/
In a hazard , if a ball is believed to be covered by loose impediments or sand, the player may remove by probing or raking with a club or otherwise, as many loose impediments or as much sand as will enable him to see a part of the ball. If an excess is removed, there is no penalty and the ball must be re-covered so that only a part of the ball is visible. If the ball is moved during the removal, there is no penalty; the ball must be replaced and, if necessary, re-covered. As to removal of loose impediments outside a hazard , see Rule 23-1 .

See also 12-2.

Yes yes yes and yes.  End of story.  The only thing that could make this whole incident more classic would be if Fuse science gave him an endorsement deal.

Yea The rules say.......But aren't there ball spotters and marshalls around. No. They couldn't tell the poor sap he was about to hit the wrong ball....And how the heck is there a practice ball in a bunker Tour Pros are about to play? We know Daly is at fault.  But someone knew prior and maybe shoulda spoke up.

How do we know nobody did? Daly usually has a good sized gallery & I would imagine someone would have said something. But that's beside the point. It's Daly & his caddy's responsibility to play the correct ball, period.

Re pumping 5 balls into the lake, I am totally with the officials that decided to rescind his invitation to the next event. Un-pro-fes-sion-al. Shit I don't even him 5 balls in a row into a lake...after the 2nd I'm aiming for green grass. Daly just said eff it & kept filling the lake.

Re his excuse of running out of balls. Lame. As stated, an official said he could have continued provided he simply got more of the same balls he was using.

This guy has been living out of sponsor's exemptions for years now. And I get that he increases the gate.

So does the bearded lady & lobster boy, which is what Daly has become - a circus sideshow.

So someone tells him he's playing the wrong ball and he plays it anyway? I think not. We know who's responsibility it is. Just I would think common decency of a spotter/marshall would be to tell him. Unless ofcourse they think of Daly like you do and just wanted to help wind him up.....
