Not for me. I enjoyed following him, Darren Clarke and Davis Love a few years back in a practice round at the Masters. Lee was always polite with the spectators. But I can't say I think he is really number one. You need a major for that ranking IMO.

Don't be silly,  It has nothing to do with bitterness.  He just doesn't garner any interest from most People in the US.  He has a fairly blah personality, he has not really made an effort to gain a following over here.  Reaction to him certainly isn't as polarized as it is with Monty, but that's just because there isn't a lot interest pro or con.  Most of us just don't care if he ever plays over here again.  His presence or lack of it will never contribute to my decision as to whether or not I watch a golf tournament.

I think you are making unfair assumptions. Very few people are "bitter" towards Westwood. For most, it's a feeling of apathy because we don't really care about him.

I think this comment is a little unfair. I like Lee Westwood and think he deserves his #1.  He seems like a nice guy and uncertain why he commented on PGA players not wanting to play in Europe.  Both he and Rory are great golfers and I think it is too bad they don't want to play here more but since they are European I understand the the decision. Having said that I doubt Lee's presence will be missed much.  He is a bland sort of fellow and doesn't seem to have much of  a following here in the US.  Rory will probably be missed more than Lee, but again we have Ricky so not so much maybe.  But I personally wish both of them the best and hope it all works out for them.

It really is a non-issue.  Westwood got his ranking by a computer formula, not by winning any tournaments.  He has earned the reputation as someone who can't win the big ones. can only come "close".  Doesn't really matter whether he shows up at the Players or not.  It will be a much bigger loss if McDowell, McIlroy and/or Kaymer do not play.  They have the star power or wins to warrant interest. Not Westwood.

Lee Westwood is overrated anyways. And I don't like his swing... I really could care less what tournaments he is or isn't playing in...

At least Martin Kaymer has actually won a major, i think he deserves to leapfrog Westwood as well and become #1.   If Westwood can finish the job this year and win the Masters, he can have it back.  It was his last year until the back 9 on Sunday, Phil just ripped it out of his hands.  Kind of the story of  Westwood's career so far, so close in the majors but no trophy.  With Tiger's struggles and Phil's health and personal issues, Westwood has had his chance to shine and although he is statistically #1 in the world rankings, does anyone really think he's the worlds best player.  I'll give him his due, he's very consistent but just doesnt win very often.

He is a great player and fully deserves the #1 spot, he will not have it long as i would not be surprised if Kaymer takes it off him especially the way he is playing this weekend at the Abu Dhabi, but there is a lot of harshness against Westwood on here, yes he is a bland player but he is also very very good. He isnt the most exciting to watch but he goes out and gets the job done.

There was a post a bit back about him stating he is staying in Europe this year and not going to play on the PGA tour. A lot of people took offence to this on here and gave out a lot of stick about this, come on he is English and wants to stay i europe with his family you cant blame him for this.

Give him a break

The schoolteacher was taking her first golfing lesson. "Is the word spelt p-u-t or p-u-t-t?" she asked the instructor. "P-u-t-t is correct," he replied. "Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a vain attempt to do the same thing."

Lol ... most people here would pimp their Grandmother out in order to have Lee Westwood's swing for a day. This thread is just perpetuating the USA kicking Europe theme that is a recurring undercurrent on this website ... don't get me wrong I love America and Americans (I lived there for three years) ... I just wish the feeling was reciprocated more habitually ...

I agree that it was a pretty silly comment.  Really has nothing to do with anything.  I don't like Jim Furyk's swing, but I still like to watch him play.

Sound like you are just a little too sensitive. His swing is odd but that doesn't mean I hate Europeans and don't want to travel there. BTW, have you seen anyone criticize Kaymer or his golf game? No, he has a good game and a major under his belt. And he should be #1.

But he isn't No.1,and if he should be No.1 then he would be(probably will be soon enough in fairness though)

Lee Westwood is No.1 on merit, you can't just change the rules because there is a Golfer you don't like in the No.1 spot.

Pimp my grandmother for a golf swing? I can't speak for Americans, but this Canadian thinks that's a really stupid thing to say. Even as a joke.

Actually, there has been some talk about tweaking the system so more emphasis is placed on the current months and majors. Many thought Tiger maintained his #1 ranking too long. But when it comes right down to it, I could care less who is ranked what. The most important thing to me is who wins the majors and a few other important events.

I am not speaking for any American but myself, but I feel that to become #1 in the world, you actually have to beat someone.  Westwood has not done that.  Yes, he is a very good player, but until he wins a big tournament, he should not be considered #1.  Kaymer has that major (and thoroughly kicked Westwood's and everyone else's @ss this weekend).  If anyone deserves to be #1, it is he, not Westwood.  And last I checked, Kaymer hails from Europe.

    • Day 133 (25 Apr 24) - Worked with the Divot Board today added a piece of cardboad behind the ball to help reinforce ball first contact. Contact improved through the round.   Added grandson's football goal posts about 10yds out to add a good start line visual Good session today.
    • Day 120: 4/25/24 Full Speed Spectrum training session. Low energy today and my speed was lower than normal. Will see what I can do on Saturday.
    • Day 541, April 25, 2024 Ten minutes after lessons. Still not caught up, but should be by tomorrow evening.
    • Playing irons only may lead to some short-term gains, but you'll want to at least practice with the driver if you ultimately have some decently good goals.
    • He plays from 68.3 / 124.  A combo tee setup of normal mens and seniors.   I play from 69.7/127.   He left after taking a triple on 14 and then leaving.  Which plays to what I think his plan is,   He doesn’t stroke on 14 but would have to take bogey for non completed holes on the way in.   Maybe that’s giving him too much credit, but he found a way to add 4 shots to his score over three holes so….     I looked up his last 20 rounds in GHIN and he has a lot of rounds at easier courses (rating and slope) that are higher than his normal rounds at home.   Since I mostly have his front nine score during the match (36) to go on, he has three nine hole scores at our course posted that are 41-43. I wrote the whole thing up to the head of our golf association who runs all the tournaments.  Our pro is not involved officially in the tournaments because the golf associations are separate from the club.   He’s pretty well known for this, however I was pretty shocked at how well he played carrying a 15.   I think eventually they will do something, a lot of people have complained.  The golf association threw someone out a couple of years ago and it was a three month situation where the guy retaliated.  They probably are hesitant to go thru anything like that again.  That is a rather crazy story I might post about later.
