My Swing (bmartin461)

35 posts in this topic

Recorded from my iPhone so I can't slow it down.  Seems like the shaft is too upright on the downswing...

Any thoughts?

I am planning to sign up for Evolvr soon, is this video ok or should I look to record with a better camera?

Thanks!

Brad

You should be better than a 22.9 handicap with that swing.

Having said that I bet your bad shot is a shank. The reason being you thrust at the ball on the downswing with your lower body, causing your arms to not have any room on the way down and you hit it on the hosel.

A good drill I recommend is the "heels up drill". Simply lift your heels a little bit in the air when you adress the ball and then focus on replanting them again on the downswing. This teaches you to transfer your weight towards your front heel on the downswing and fixes the early extension fault.

I'm sure that the camera would work but you'd be better off with something that could shoot high speed video... Look at the cameras made by Casio... they start at about $100 and go up from there.

Yes, that would work for Evolvr, and would be good to check this out http://thesandtrap.com/b/playing_tips/filming_your_swing

I'd also recommend doing this drill, get the feeling of having the weight forward, hands forward.  Stretch out that followthrough.  Hope to see your video soon!

nice swing. looks alot better than a 22 handicap. nice weight shift, but i think your transition might be a little quick, which can cause you to get stuck and push the ball out right. your swing actually reminds me of tom watson's.

Thanks for the feedback.  Actually I'm now a 24.5 handicap!  I've been working on finding a swing that works for me, I'm a product of reading and watching too much and making too many changes.   You are right, my bad shots typically are shanks, sometimes tops.

I will try that drill.

Based on my limited experience, it's hard to correlate a handicap index and one single swing.

My uneducated guess is that your swing looks really busy and maybe a little rushed. It's not often a good player seems to treat address to finish positon as a race. My best swings and strikes (on video) are never the fastest, at least in the part where I reach the top then transition to the downswing. There should be enough time winding and unwinding that club head speed is being generated but the club reaches the ball on plane and on target. Yeah, I know that's extremely untechnical and virtually meatless, but I suspect a few slow motion swings (not regular swings fillmed in slow motion - slow motion swings filmed at regular speed) would be beneficial. Check out some of the various swing drills Erik and Mike have posted or the slow motion practice swing Ai Miyazato uses - they can move through positions so slowly (under control and in balance) you have to look closely to make sure it's not a screen capture. Just my 2 cents - carry on.

The Evolvr guys know better than me so I will refrain from offering swing advice......but..... I suggest an investment in a new camera. Slow motion would be best but not necessary, but if you want to improve it will help you see better what is happening in the swing and it will also help the evlovr guys see your swing better.

Maybe you can ask Santa?

Shots that you're hitting now? Shot you hate? etc.?

Arms can come down faster to help the shaft from not passing the left arm quite so early. That's not the swing of a 22.9 though - is that out of date?

Shots I hit now are mostly draws.  Shot I hate is driver off the tee, almost always right.   Second most hated shot is out of the bunker, last round I was in the bunker 3 times, and it took me 8 total shots to get out, not good.

22.9 is out of date, sadly I'm a 24.4 now.   Since I can't get off the tee consistently I usually take doubles on 50% of the holes.  This is what I'm working on now, that and sand shots.

Some updated videos.  The ball striking has improved greatly thanks to feedback from Evolvr.  I'm taking a "live" lesson at the end of the month in San Diego.
