OK - Time to prove your commitment to our game.
What have you sacrificed for golf? Any good stories out there?
Have you sold something you loved for membership fees or clubs?
Has your need to play golf destroyed a relationship that was otherwise OK?
Have you knocked back a job because there were no good courses in that town?
Skipped an important family anniversary so you could play?
Had to choose between golf and "x" and chosen golf?

Please share!!

I have cut 20% from my salary to have an extra day off per week to play.
Best thing I ever did and worth every cent of the considerable thousands it costs me.
You can not put a price on quality of life and time on the golf course for me is quality time.

So far I've sacrificed two goats and a chicken to Cthulhu, and my kid sister's maidenhead to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I have no regrets all these years later. Not only has my handicap dropped, but I used to hate one of those goats.

Bag It:

3-Wood Wishon 525 F/D, 13*, Matrix Studio 65gm, Golf Pride Dual Compound
Hybrid: Wishon "321", 24*, MSF 85 HB, Winn DSI
Irons: Wishon 770CFE, Matrix Studio 74gm, Winn DSI

Putter: Odyssey DFX 2-Ball

Bag: Some big, honkin', ridiculous overkill of an Ogio cart bag with more pockets than I have teeth.

Golf is a game. Unless you are trying to become a professional and make a living at it, I would keep that in mind. I don't "sacrifice" anything for it but I do belong to a country club and suppose I could use those dues to donate to the less fortunate or take adult education classes or something. I would not trade time with my family, a better job that I would otherwise enjoy, a poor diet, etc. for golf.

Maybe if I wasn't a hack golfer I'd feel differently but golf is a game to me and a chance to get a little exercise with people who feel the same way. Love the game and watch a lot of golf on TV but it's only one aspect of my life.

I've sacrificed a lot of my time, but I don't think of it that way. It's something I enjoy to do, so I don't really look at it is a sacrifice. I spent my entire summer last year playing golf, and if I could do it over, I wouldn't have done anything differently.

I went from being about a 30 handicap to a 15 by the end of the summer. I was happy.

My marriage. And along with that my house, my car, $2400 a month in "maintenance", and one of the two dogs we had.

Golf is better than all of those things anyway.

I'm sorry, but even if that was a joke, it wasn't funny.

I think of what money I'd have if I didn't golf regularly, and how much I've spent on it. Then I try to figure out what I'd rather have. An HD TV? I rarely watch TV, and when I do, it's usually a big event (Masters, FedEx Cup playoffs, Super Bowl, etc), so I go to my dad's place and watch with mom. Money towards retirement? To retire with what? (And I already put plenty towards retirement each year).

I am skipping my sister's upcoming college graduation, since I have U.S. Open tickets for just that day. But no one is upset at me for that. She doesn't even golf and she understands.
The only thing i really sacrifice is not hanging out with friends over the summer because Im golfing, and not getting a girlfriend because I won't have much time to spend with her

I'd trade my high school girlfriend experiences (that is not an empty set!) to have started golf when you did. You're making the right trade

So far I've sacrificed two goats and a chicken to Cthulhu,

Cthulhu can help my handicap? Why hadn't I thought of that before?

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

well, some of you might not call it a sacrifice.

I played paintball heavily for a year and a half or so. I sold all my paintball gear to buy my first set of clubs, pay for lessons, and have some money to play.

well, some of you might not call it a sacrifice.

As someone who has played paintball quite a bit... you made the right choice. Golf is the BEST spring/summer sport. Winter is for hockey, and fall is reserved for some hunting and some golf.

As for my sacrafice... well, my wife thinks I'm nuts. I have given up late nights for early tee times, spent some money, and must admit... golf did play a minor role in my decision to take the BAR exam in NC and move south, away from Michigan.

Uhhh...

A successful career in a cubicle and office -- I saw "Office Space" one too many times.

I might've -- "maybe" lost a girlfriend here or two due to golf. But a new girlfriend is always somewhat available (if they're blind, deaf, and mute). A tee-time is not.

    • I have nothing to add other than I freaking love her swing and I think she's hot as hell and some of my golfing buddies disagree so I fought them
    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
