How do you cure a pretty bad fade with my Driver the most but slight in all my clubs.I know that I am probably coming over the top.the question is how do I cure this because I cant tell that I am doing it.Any tips or drills that you can think of would be really helpful.Just wanting to hit a straight drive for once.......

It's hard to diagnose you without a swing video, but when I find myself hitting some big banana balls, I really concentrate on taking the club back low and wide and not letting my forearms rotate on the backswing.

I have two goals in the backswing: 1) get the butt end of my club as far as comfortably possible from my hip, and 2) have my left wrist flat at the top.

If I get both these things working, that's when I'm driving the ball my best. Again, though, you might be doing something else wrong.

When you take the club back make sure your left arm doe's not pass your heart and take a three quarter swing, this forces you to turn your shoulders so the club can come from the inside,do it,it works, your fade, slice will be gone. You will have a lot more distance also.Plus make sure you are not moving your whole body back on the backswing also.Brace your right leg.

You're probably making the common mistake of taking the club too far inside and then making a looping over the top move on the downswing. I'm not sure how serious you are about golf, but if you really want to play pretty well (say lower 80's and sometimes in the 70's) I suggest buying a camcorder. Think of it as the 15th club in the bag as you can get a pretty good one for less than the cost of a driver and if you can get pretty decent at knowing what you do when you are hitting the ball well and when you are hitting the ball bad, you can save a lot more strokes and play better golf.

It's tough to diagnose what somebody is doing without a video, so I suggest that so YOU can see what your swing really looks like. And if all else fails, you can just load it up over at www.swingacademy.com and somebody will analyze it....all for free.

Tape back view and side view, what i told you is a proper swing,a 3 quarter swing to most people is actully a full swing, stops people overswinging,if you take it back to far with not enough shoulder turn you get arm lift which causes weak slice, fade drives.Plus with irons do you ever see the pro's on t.v ever taking the club back really far and lashing at the ball.

Does your ball start on line then fade? or does your ball go right immediately?

both case your club face is left open at ball impact and causing the slice.

it could be one of the following:

1) too tight a grip with your guiding hand (right hand for right handers)
2) your swing plane is off and moving more outside the line
3)

I personally feel you need someone to view your swing and help you break down what is exactly causing the open club face.

Do you want a quick fix during a round that is a bandage fix for your slice?. close your club face the amount the ball is slicing and use your normal swing.

Start more on a inside line with your take away.

turn your right leg inside (for right handed) forces you to take an inside the line

check your grip pressure and use a stronger grip.

good luck and happy drawing!

Got rid of my fade/slice by not using my arms in the downswing. Use your hips to initiate the downswing.

Also the club should be taken back below your shoulder plane and you must prevent body sway in the backswing by keeping your right leg the same as at address.

All of this is covered in Hogan's Five Lessons.

Try hitting a draw. I mean, physically try to hit a draw by rotating your forearms through aggressively through impact. At the very least it will give you some clues as to how you are swinging.

A launch monitor isnt going to tell you what you are doing wrong. Go get a lesson.

I'm a fade player so I know exactly what you speak of. Unless you want to blow up your swing and start all over the first step is to embrace the fact you are fade player. Jack Nicklaus' preferred flight path is left to right. I think Tiger's might be too but who knows with him. He can do everything.

That being said work on minimizing the fade/slice. You need to know such things like what the ball is doing on it's flight path. Is it starting left but turning right? Or starting down the middle and going right? Or just going right? Do you occasionally blister one that is pushed LEFT? Not seeing your swing and flight path there's not much else I can help with. The only suggestion I can make that might give you a starting point is tee up on the RIGHT hand edge of the tee box and aim to the LEFT 1/3 of the fairway. If you are hitting it straighter that day aim closer towards the middle. If you are really hitting some banana balls that day aim towards the left 1/4 of the fairway.
All of this is covered in Hogan's Five Lessons.

Sorry, worst piece of advice for a fade player. Hogan was a draw player and his grip positioning "suggestions" only makes things worse for a fade player. There are other books and I'm guessing websites that will help with grip, stance, alignment much better for a fade player than Hogan's Lessons. It's a nice book but parts of it are definitely not for the fade player.

Fade. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

Harold,

I agree with what you said about embracing what ever you tend to hit. There's a great YouTube video with Nicklaus discussing this same thing. The issue become where the desired fade becomes the unwanted slice.

Quick note on Hogan's book. Hogan's grip lesson is for a neutral hitter. He does state that he moves his hands a half inch to the left (weak grip) to battle a hook. He states this is purely individual and a golf must decide what adjustments are needed for his own tendencies.

Usually it will start just a little left and then goes right but I think the reason it goes a little left is that like you have said I am squared around that way to allow me to hit the fairways.

I have learned to deal with it all summer and do pretty good even with it.But I am thinking if I can get rid of it I can gain more yardage of the tee box,is this right.I am going to video my swing this afternoon and will try to get a link on here no matter how ugly it might be

Hard to tell off the video without slowing it down. Try www.swingacademy.com . It appears you're taking the club back way to the inside. I was taught you always do the opposite in your down swing than you do in your take away. Try bringing the club back more on plane. When you come over top you also tend to lose some of your lag.

Sorry, worst piece of advice for a fade player. Hogan was a draw player

Hogan did just about everything he could not to hit a draw. His normal shot became a soft fade through a LOT of work. So yeah, not a draw player. Not when he was winning, that is.

I parallel the previous advice, which I saw: try to hit a draw on the range. But really, I wonder why you're tired of a fade. It's a very reliable shot.
