Do you think that Tiger missing the cut at Turnberry is a good thing? I think it could be just to show how difficult it is to do what Tiger does week in and week out. It also furthers the idea that his accomplishments are greater than that of Roger Federer. What do you think?

It wouldnt be a good thing. Tiger is professional golf. Even if he isnt competetive, it good just having him around on the weekend.

How does Tiger laying an enormous egg in a huge tournament while still 4 majors away from tying the best ever show that his achievements are greater than the man who has the most Grand Slams in history and has a ridiculous 87.5% career win-loss ratio (over 90% at Wimbledon and the US Open)?

He has the records for most Grand Slams, most Grand Slam Finals, most consecutive Grand Slam finals, most years winning at least 2 Grand Slams, most years winning at least 3 Grand Slams, and most consecutive sets won.

I don't think sucking out big time and missing the cut improves his greatness....

Tom Watson leading the tournament is a good thing.

Tiger missing the cut is neither good nor bad. It just is what it is.

How on earth can Tiger's bad week diminish Roger's achievements?

This is what links golf is all about as

iacas stated in another thread. But the wind is just papering over cracks in his swing: head coming up way too early. However, aren't you hyped that Tom Watson is joint-leader?

Tiger missing the cut will KILL the ratings on this event though. People watch golf just to see Tiger. They dont care about anyone else. I'm still gonna watch but thats just how it is.

No one said it diminishes his achievements. I just think it may further the idea that golf is tougher to compete and win in than tennis. I'm just trying to say that maybe it shows that even Tiger can struggle in a sport as difficult to play as golf.

I'm excited to watch Tom Watson this weekend, so a missing Tiger isn't an issue for me.

I can see how it does. Tiger's missed fewer cuts in his career as a pro than Padraig Harrington has missed in the past 2 or 3 months. Tiger's missing the cut here draws attention to how great an achievement that - and all of his others - really are.

Plus, Tiger's winning percentage against the other players in the field is better than 87.5%. But this isn't the "more impressive 14 majors" thread, so let's limit that type of tennis vs. golf discussion to that thread, not this one.

I could care less if Tiger missed the cut, its more exciting to see him to do bad anyway.

To sit here and say that Tigers bad performance somehow solidifies his greatness is an insult to all those who really played today, and did not choke horribly.

I am however thrilled that Daly is shooting par after two. If the wind blows the right way, he could be a real performer here.

It definitely does highlight how tough it can be to post good numbers every time you tee it up.

I just don't wanna hear another analyst blame the one week lay-off that Tiger's been doing leading up to majors recently. But I know its coming

Nonsense. This is The Open, not a putting contest on a flat dart throwing course in Palm Springs.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

You're kidding, right?

Tiger in the running means double the ratings. A tournament without Tiger will not pull in viewers, even if it is The Open.

I'm not a huge Tiger fan, so him missing the cut doesn't bother me at all. I enjoy watching him play, he's as exciting as anyone, but it didn't bother me if he won this or didn't make the cut - don't care.

But, one thing it did show is he's human. He hit the ball about as bad as I can remember (i've only been watching golf a few years) him ever hitting it...

I think he'll recover, because he did have two top ten's in majors prior to this one this season....so, I'm not concerned at all about him.

tiger missing the cut does not surpise me. He isn't swinging the club consistently enough to contend on a really tight course when the wind is blowing hard. He might be able to win tournaments on wide open courses on the US PGA tour on target golf like tracks but not on a course where accuracy really is important. I was surprised at how bad his course management was at times. He should have left his driver in the bag.

We need to look on the bright side.. at least he won't increase his lead on Phil in the world rankings.
