I believe that the average golfer can take 5+ strokes off their scores if they were able to get up and down from around the green more than 50% of the time.

i believe the average golfer could take 10 strokes off of their score if their up and in percentage were that high. I've seen tons of people, myself included (but I'm working on it!), that hit their approach, then chip, then 3 putt. Thankfully my putter is pretty good these days... but my chipping/pitching is horrendus.

I think the average golfer can save an additional 4-5 strokes by curing CRIS (Cranial-Rectal Inversion Syndrome). I know it helped me, even though I do have occasional relapses. ;)

For me it's not getting "up and down" as much as it is keeping my drives straight, I believe for myself if I could find every fairway I'd be able to shave 5 strokes every round......It's harder to hit off another fairway than it is my own lol

For those looking to take those five strokes off without much work, just skip the last hole.

Maaaaannn......and here I thought this was going to be some sort of super golf drug or something.

Was thinking something along the lines of that too!

I'm halfway there for the up and down thing. I can get up with my wedges but my putting is s**t.

My typical par 4 is drive, approach off green, chip on green but far from hole, 2-putt for bogey.

So, yes, OP, if I could chip close enough to the hole to 1-putt that sure would help my score!

There are no secrets to that, though, only practice...

I'll agree with that. I'd say my typical round is a 90 right now, hitting 5 greens. So figure I have the chance for up/down 13 times a round, I probably do it twice (I just started tracking this). So, if I got to 50%, round up and call it seven times per round, that would be exactly 5 strokes improvement. I got up and down 3x on the back nine last time I played (forgot to track the front) and ended up shooting an 87 last time out, which is my lowest score.

I enjoy working on hitting 3w/driver, but the real satisfaction is the "safety net" of knowing I can get up and down around the green when I screw up my tee shot or approach shot.

Man, I hear that - nothing more frustrating than laying-up, only to not hit your chip/putt close enough to have made it worthwile playing the "safe" approach!

I believe for myself if I could find every fairway I'd be able to shave 5 strokes every round

I genuinely believed this about my game too until this season. I'm hitting more fairways than ever in my life (70-75% and the "misses" aren't by much) but my mid iron play has completely gone to pieces since last season. I'm now scoring worse that I did last year with my wayward driving!

Just walking off the course after 17 is also a good way to take 5 strokes off your card.

Personally I can shave an average of 9 shots if I stay away form hazards...my last round I had 12 penalty shots, take those out of contention, I would have played 107. Take back a few misreads at the green, 3 less. That puts me at 104.

For me it's a combination of things....If my driving is good, my short game goes to hell in a hand basket. If my short game is hot, my driving is dead. The only thing that I have going on pretty consistently for me is putting...with about 60% 2-putts. I can't seem to put all three components together on the same day.
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

I would have to agree however I can probably shave 5-10 strokes per 18 if I can chip around the rough/fringe...Yesterday was my first round of the year and my chipping killed me...I would've shot in the 90s if i can chip to save my life....I'll be working on it for sure.

I practiced chipping out of heavy rough yesterday and discovered if you open the club face and swing with more lenght on your backswing the ball will pop out and roll, fun to practice and more fun to get up and down during a round from the heavy rough.

You can also take 5 strokes off by...

...hitting more fairways
...hitting more greens
...putting better

The short game is in my opinion the easiest part to get better at.

I may save more than 5 stokes by that method could be up to 10 strokes

Yes I could get an 18 by that method and play of off +48 consistently
