i currently use a driver and a 4 hybrid for the longer shots
i don't have a fairway wood and never hit one before but i'm looking for something to get a few more yards
either a 2 hybrid or 3w
being that i've never hit a wood before should i try the hybrid first?
i'll be buying used so what should i look for as far as brands and if you have one that your willing to get rid of let me know
thanks

Well, you have a gap between your Driver and 4 Hybrid. You could use a 3 Wood and a 3 Hybrid. I use the 3 Hybrid more often than my 3 wood so I would suggest the 3 Hybrid. Come to think about it, I use my 3 wood maybe twice a round. Once off a tee so I don't get into the bunker and the other time is on the long par 5 hole, that's it.
The Hybrid will be easier to hit with the shorter shaft.
As for brands, that is a personal preference and you should go and hit them before buying.

Go out and try a few hybrids and 3, 4, 5, and 7 woods. See which you like. Your local golf shop hopefully has a hitting bay and some used clubs. Give those a whirl to see if you can find out which you prefer in general, then we can narrow things down. If you like your 4-hybrid, you could consider a similar one. Same with your driver. Assuming you like those two clubs, give Adams and Taylormade a try first. As you can tell by my bag, I'm quite fond of Nike's woods lineup.

I would suggest a 5 wood (or 4 wood) for your first fairway wood it will be easier to hit off turf and I love mine out of the rough when I need the distance and you won't give up a lot of distance compared to a 3 wood. I had a 2 hybrid for my first hybrid and found it hard to hit (couldn't get much idistance out of it as I hit it so low), found a Wilson 3 hybrid that fit my needs better as to distance gaps and I love it, Wilson just came out with new hybrids so you can the 09 models really cheap. I originally went looking for an Adams hybrid as they seem to be highly favored by many but found they were pricy, would have but one anyway if I hadn't come across the Wilson so cheap.

3w is great off the tee when a driver is a bit too much, also works well for your second shot off the fairway on par 5s for a shot at eagle (or even double eagle hehe), Hybrid's are great for replacing long irons like 3 and 4 irons, and they work very well for longer par 3's of 200+ yards

Fairway woods vs hybrids are quite a personal preference - some can hit one well and not hit the other. Your distance gap between driver and 4 hybrid is pretty big though, and at least one club in between might be useful. You might want to check out the Wilson Staff "Fybrids" (which I play and love); high quality clubs (Paddy Harrington plays one) with nice shafts (UST Proforce V2) and Golfpride grips standard, and they include in their series a true transition club between the fairways and hybrids. Plus they're dirt cheap ($49) at Rockbottomgolf.com right now.

I'd go with a 3, 4, or 5 wood. 2 hybrids are supposed to be easier to hit than 2 irons, but I think they still go pretty low. Get a 2h if you play in windy conditions and you're just looking to keep the ball in play or you want run the ball onto the green. "Hit and stick" and "2i" (or 2h) are not synonymous.

I think a lot also depends on the course you play. At my course I always bring my 3 hybrid along with a 5 wood....if it's windy I keep the 5 in the car and play the hybrid. A lot of times I'll keep both in the car and opt for another wedge if it's calm and in the morning with a lot of dew on the grass. Most of the time I play Driver, 3W, 4hybrid, 4,5,6,7,8,9,pw, 52, 56, 60. I hit my 4 hybrid about 15 yards longer than my 4I so it kind of takes the place of a 3i or 3h......sounds confusing but it works perfect for my course. At another course I sit the 60 and put in either the 5w or 3h.......

So to wrap up this ultra confusing reply........ also let the course you're playing and conditions dictate what you will put in the bag...... (probably could have just said that!! )

Recently I've replaced my Cobra F-Speed 5w with an Adams a70s 3 hybrid, and the difference is amazing. I'm about the same (if not slightly longer) distance wise with the hybrid, but It's a fantastic tool for getting the ball into play. Rather than 70% of fairways, I'm closer to 90%, and I find the hybrid much easier to play off the deck. It's all about personal preference, but I've been loving the hybrid.

I would have to agree with most of your response...as you can see in my signature I still have a starter set 3 wood that never comes out of the bag. I have played with a G10 3wood and do hit it well off the tee...I dont trust it off the deck since I have had zero practice time with it..I played the 3wood last Friday and hit twice off the tee...I hit my 3h anytime its longer then 200yds and I can get it pretty close...Give Adams hybrid a try, they are very forgiving and long.

I think 4 woods are going to become real popular soon .. you def. need something ... i would suggest a 3 wood and 3 hybrid .. that's what i use and love it. the gap is just about right for me. i've never hit a 2h so can't comment there. ... but of course hit everything and use what you're most comfortable with.

another note .. personally, i think a 3 wood is just as important as a driver and i use mine quite a bit .. you can shape shots better, be more accurate with it, hit it off a tee, fairway or rough, and can dial down on it a bit.

you'll have to practice with it a lot to get good with it .. but if you do, it'll def. pay off. i broke a 3w last year and went a few rounds without it ... my confidence going into the round was very low knowing i didnt have my 3w. after having that feeling i decided i'd never again play a round without it.

if you're looking for a used 3h, i have a brand new wilson staff fybrid 3 hybrid just sitting here. 9.8 rating condition out of 10. let me know if you want to see pics.

Check out both 3W and 4W. Traditional 3W comes in at about 15° loft | 4W about 17°, and several Golf D articles say 4W is easier for most golfers to hit than 3W.

I use 3W and 5W for extra distance, and because I'm one of those people who has trouble hitting a hybrid. (The one I owned, at least. Hit an Adams a7 hybrid at a demo day, and it worked pretty well.) Hybrids have shorter shafts and greater loft than same-numbered fairway woods, and don't hit the ball as far. So, a 3W and 5W, or maybe a 4W and a 3H, might be a way to go. As others have said, test out different clubs and combinations of clubs to pick up distance and cover your yardage gaps.

Focus, connect and follow through!

My best results are when I replace long irons with hybrids and leave the woods alone.

I really struggled badly when I tried to replace fairway woods with hybrids. It was an experiment that yielded crappy results.

I didn't think it was confusing... that is the exact setup and approach I use (minus the 4 iron). Last year I carried the 5W in addition to the hybrid and didn't find myself using it, maybe once a round depending upon wind. Considering some of us don't play a 5 w I would be interested in knowing how well you play from the tees. I'm a long, consistent driver so working the driver and 3W may be making the 5w obsolete. This is all just part of the addiction known as golf.

I personally love my 2 hybrid (I do not carry any woods but instead go driver, 2-4h, 5-sw with a gap wedge and 60 degree wedge). Hitting a 3 wood off the tee may have been a little better, but my 2 still goes 200 yards and with the smaller head it is much much better for me on the fairways and rough. When you test a 3 wood versus hybrids, I would recommend making sure you can hit them from the fairway.

i agree thats why i went with the $20 club incase i have a hard time hitting it off the turf and just keep it for the shorter holes where i don't need a driver
either way i would rather spend $20 then $200 especially if i don't know if i can even hit the thing
