I work at a golf course and am in contact with literally hundreds of golfers everyday. I was just wondering what you all think of the arrogant •••••••s that play. In my experiences i find that about 50% of golfers are, for the most part, ok to deal with. This group of golfers doesnt cause problems, clean up after themselves and are generally pleasant to be around. Another 40% or so are very friendly and outgoing. They too are generally pleasant to deal with.

Then it comes to the final 10% of golfers. I know there are •••••••s everywhere, but there is a very high proportion of them at a golf course. Im talking about the people who think they are the center of the universe. They make a mess and dont clean it up, they complain about anything and everything, they talk down to golf course employees, they dont fix their divots or ball marks, they ignore course rules, they get mad at the starters and rangers if something comes up and they've been delayed by a few minutes, the course is never up to their standards (probablly cause •••••••s like them mess it up and expect someone else to fix it) and just are in general obnoxious and unpleasant to be in contact with.

I was wondering why there is such a large number of golfers that act like this and to anyone on here (i guarentee that there are some of you) that acts like it, why? Do you just not care or do you really think you are better than everyone else?

Its like that everywhere you go. I work retail and its the same exact way.

At least you don't have to deal with one thing, and possibly the worst thing... WHITE TRASH who like to make a scene and think they deserve everything for a discount, or better yet, free.

I wish my club was still private for that reason. You get a bunch of drunk college kids that think the carts are bumper-carts and have no respect for the game or the course. Really pisses me off.

Career Bests:

9 Holes--37 @ The Fairways at Arrowhead-Front(+2)

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

Home Course:

1) The Fairways at Arrowhead

2) Mayfair Country Club

Its funny that you say that because I feel like thats kind of the attitude that bothers me. While i agree that anyone that messes with the course and doesnt fix it is a major annoyance so are old, rich, arrogant people who just assume that its all the "drunken college kids". Im a college kid and I show far more respect toward the course and the game than a lot of old people. And in my experiences, the older people are just as bad or worse than college kids. I have literally never seen anyone under 25 drive a cart onto the tee boxes, fringe or green, yet old people do it all the time. Then when I tell them not to, they ignore me, with the same mentality that you displayed. They act like since im 20 and they are 65, they dont have to listen to me. While I would agree with you that kids can act stupid and immature I would disagree with you that they are the problem. I would say that probablly 90% of the time when there is an issue like this its either a rich middle aged guy or an old guy.

Another reason why carts should be banned from golf. You hardly ever see a walker acting like a dick or being disrespectful to the course.

I don't think 10% of golfers is any greater proportion of •••••••s than you'll encounter anywhere else among the general populace. Yes, it's a pity there are so many people who seem to be self-absorbed to the point of psychopathology, but to a large extent that's a predictable product of our solipsistic society.

Point well taken but the economic side is that without carts, there would be fewer golfers resulting in fewer courses that would still be in business.

To me it seems the better the golfer the bigger the **** they are, of course there are many exceptions but when people get better they look down on others and generally piss everyone off

I don't play with too many low cappers, but based on the 2 I do get a chance to play with, it's a 50% ratio. One nice guy and one not so much.

WHile I do agree that there are a bunch of jerks that play golf, I think the proportions you describe can be applied to almost everything else in life. There are going to be stuck-up, arrogant people everywhere you go, and there really isn't all that much you can do about it other than ignore them.

Golf tends to be an elitist sport, so you get those stuck up people more often.

The sample size is a little small to be drawing firm conclusions from the data.

I have some experience on the country club scene. In the late 1960s, I was a caddie, and in the mid-1970s I was a bartender.

What I tended to see: The really rich people sometimes were quirky, but at least you could work with them. The real pains were those who had to take out a bank loan for the initiation fee, and could barely pay their monthly dues. They had personality/self-esteem issues, and wanted to lord it over the help.

Still remember one hotshot from my bartending days. He would walk in barefoot after 18 holes and put his dirty golf shoes on my bar counter while he sat and had his drink. He later went to prison for a cocaine bust.

Surprisenly all the guys i play with in my league are good guys who take care of the course, they even go out of the way to fix other ball marks, ect..

I really haven't been paired up with anyone like that. I guess us midwestern boys know how to act on the golf course ;b, except for stealing golf balls, honestly i am going to mark out the nike symbol on my golf ball so they don't know what they hell there picking up ;b

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
