If I don't fall into the "always" category I back off. Hard lesson learned. This in no way guarantees a good result, I simply demand of myself a plan and a plan to execute my plan Must have hit hundreds of shots with a blank or scattered mind before I finally figured out there is no point in hitting unless I am ready. My driver does this to me more than anything. Notice it is garaged for the season.

Not often enough, but it usually ends up being a self fulfilling prophecy.

Sometimes the ball just lies a certain way and has a look about it that makes you set up to it and think "I'm gonna smack the $#!+ out of this one"

I stand over every shot with the thinking that 'after I hit, this could be the best shot I will have ever executed'. I expect every drive to be 300 down the middle. I expect every approach to be within 3 feet of the hole (unless my plan calls for something different). Even if it is the toughest lie, under the most difficult of circumstances, I expect to hit a perfect shot.

If the answer isn't 'always' you should pick up a new game. If you stand over a shot with a plan of attack, and don't think you can hit it how you need to, then you've already lost. Does hitting the perfect shot always happen? Hardly ever, but you at least have to think that one shot, that one swing, will be perfect.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I totaly agree, regardless of handicap, this is a must. Now definition of a good shot might vary between differents playing levels. I am probably not thinking of hitting within 3 feet of the pin, but on the same 1/3 of the green, but I do expect that every time I swing I will hit the ball solid and get it moving in a positive direction.

I guess it would depend on what kind of day you were having.

After I read some of these I probably should have voted always. I do always have a planned shot that I believe I can execute. But sometimes there isn't a good choice of shots because of where you left the last shot. As example if you're buried in the 3 inch rough and you want to hit a 6 to get to the green but know nothing with less loft than an 8 will get out of the rough, I hit an 8 because I know I can do that and am pretty sure it would be a miracle to put the 6 on the green. But is that a good shot?

Blue, since you said it so well I can't add anything.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

I picked frequently in the poll, but that isn't quite exactly my feeling.

I have a wealth of confidence, but I'm not foolish enough to think that everything is going to work perfectly from a difficult situation. There are lies where I know that I only have about a 75% chance (or worse) of pulling off the shot, and I there is no way that I can trick myself into believing otherwise. In such a situation there has to be some niggling doubt in the back of my mind, even if I don't consiously recognize it. I'm still going to put the best swing I can on the ball and then deal with the next one as it comes. So I'd say that my confidence is usually high, but just occasionally I have a bit of doubt.

Always.

I always address with the confidence and intent on hitting the best shot. If it doesn't, whatever. I can still recover with the next shot.

I agree with everything you said except for this line. Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but if the answer isn't "always", you shouldn't have to quit golf. Just practice your mental game more.

I have confidence that I picked the best available shot based on the course, the lie, and my ability. I have confidence that the practice I put in will give me a better chance to execute the shot.

I don't stand over every ball and know with 100% certainty that I am going to hit the perfect shot. If I felt that way, I would be firing at pins all day long. Instead, I choose a safe landing area and take my best shot. I don't think I need to quit golf because of that approach.

Amen. In my opinion, false confidence leads to overconfidence, and that tempts a player to try shots that he shouldn't even consider. Be confident, but acknowledge your limitations too.

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
