"Elderly golfer dies days after injury

PRINT RSS Updated Oct 17, 2010 11:28 PM ET
Authorities say a man who was hit in the head with a golf ball at a Southern California country club has died.

The San Bernardino County coroner's office said on its website Sunday that 69-year-old Hiroshi Tango died at a hospital Saturday.

On Oct. 7, Tango was playing golf at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino when he was hit in the head by a ball.

The coroner says he complained of head and neck pain after he was hit and he was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he "succumbed to his injuries" on Saturday, nine days after he was struck by the stray ball."

Golf balls are dangerous, that's why I don't understand why these idiots hit into people out of stupidity or anger.

Im willing to bet that most of the time when someone gets hit, its someone playing another hole that hits a shot so bad that it lands in the wrong fairway or hits them when they're on the next teebox, etc. Its hard enough to hit a 40 yard wide fairway or a 50 ft wide green, imagine how hard it is to actually hit a person even if you were really trying to. Most are stray shots that are simply accidental or blind shots where someone might not be aware of someone being there. One course I play at frequently is very small and tight, a shot even a bit offline has the chance to hit someone playing another hole. Ill wait to hit if i think someone is even remotely close to where the shot might go and try to stay extra alert if I think i might be in someone elses line of fire as you can never tell where someone elses shot is going to go. If everyone was a scratch golfer and hit perfect shots all the time, then courses would never get backed up and nobody would ever be in danger of getting hit accidentally. But we all know there all golfers of all abilities on any course at any given time, many unaware of simple golf etiquette as well.

I'm sure most are accidental, but some common sense still needs to apply. If I'm playing on a tight course (which I do) I wait to hit if someone is on my left, as I know I have a tendancy to slice. I doubt others take that into consideration.

Pretty much since forever. Where do you think "elderly" begins? He was certainly well past middle age.

I don't know how old you are but 69 is not "elderly" to this 53 year old. When I hear that term I think of someone in failing health probably in their 80's. My mother is 77 and far from "elderly". One definition (wikipedia) is someone past the average life expectancy. Others say "Being past middle age and approaching old age; rather old" so maybe you are right. I guess it's a matter of perception.

When I think of elderly I think of someone with gray hair.

I think the majority of seniors are elderly (69 is most def a sr citizen)

Oh and contrary to what you may believe the average person doesn't live to be 80, as unfortunate as that is

MIddle aged is like 40-50 so yeah, well past.

It's unfortunate things like this can happen in this amazing game. I've almost got hit in the head twice (once yesterday!!, missed by like 4-5 feet) and once a few months ago by a foot. Yesterday my playing partner shanked a 20y pitch like 45* to his right where I was standing. Scary stuff. When i got missed by a foot it was a full swing shot too. Certainly would have knocked me out if not killed me, it was a thinned line drive shank.

Hate to inform you, but if your mother is 77 she is elderly. Elderly doesn't mean feeble or frail. I'm 63 and I'm pretty close to elderly, although I don't feel it or care to admit it.

A woman who plays in the womens 18 hole league on Thursdays at my home course got nailed in the head by a guy hitting at the wrong green. She was playing on 16 and he was supposed to be playing on #6 when he blasted a 3W and bounced it off her noggin. Raised a baseball sized lump and bled like crazy but she absolutely refused to let the staff call 911 because she said her insurance wouldn't pay the bill. The next week she was back playing in the league.

What I never quite understood is regardless of whether he was playing to the wrong green or not, why was he hitting into another group of players? What kind of idiot doesn't wait until his landing area is clear before he hits? This is my home course and there is no way that he shouldn't have been able to see them, or if he was behind a tree, then he should have stepped to the side to verify that the coast was clear. Not to mention that it's really pretty obvious that he was headed the wrong way.... there is a row of trees and native rough that clearly separates the 2 holes.

On the ninth (last) hole of a golf match once a friend and teammate of mine hit his girlfriend (who was sitting at the clubhouse behind the ninth green) in the head. Luckily she only got a concussion, but apparently she's been hit before because her house is right past the 7th green.

Another time we were picking the range by hitting golf balls out of the woods and back into the driving range. One time one member of the team nailed a guy right in the nads with a golf ball.

None of these were on purpose, and luckily no one was seriously injured.

My great uncle got hit in the head when I was little. Knocked him unconscious but thankfully he came out of it after a few minutes. Never was the same after though - and he never played golf again. Pretty sad.

Because of my uncle I'm always on the lookout when others usually aren't. I've saved my playing partners more than once from being hit. There are some real idiots out there.

Wow. This is the second death involving golf in the area in 10 days or so. At my local course a player had a heart attack while playing two Sundays ago and passed away. He was in our mens club. Now this one.

In a golf outing two weeks ago, a golfer in his mid 40s a couple of groups in front of us hit his tee shot, went down to hit his 2nd & had a heart attack. Course employees tried to revive him with a defibrillator and EMTs were unable to also. Eerie considering he was 5 or so years younger than me.
