NO, really just keep them in case a friend needs a set to use. Unfortunately, can't get any real money for them, so just keep 'em.

I switch it up every 3 or 4 rounds. If putting an alternate setup into service, matching the irons, wedges, woods and putter is part of the process. I might bring my main putter, but more often than not it's set specific. Not playing as often as a lot of guys on this forum, and virtually never in tournaments, a handful of strokes either way is not a concern.

Here's why I rotate my sets - not buy and sell - just stuff already in the garage. Learning how to get around the course with a particular setup, how do the woods transition into the long irons, finding that one "go to" distance with each set (it's 225 and 170 with my Mizunos, 180 with my Burkes, 155 with my Hogans, and pretty much every distance with my Titleists and Clevelands), seeing which heads are best suited for which type of play, is satisfying. If a set has some bag chatter my imagination drifts to their history - especially with vintage woods - how many great shots were hit with those sticks? How much money won or lost. Weird huh?!? One reason my old MacGregors are rarely in the bag on the course is being unsure of distances. The gaps are a bit different that most of my other sets. Maybe it's the wingback head and maybe it's the shafts. In contrast, distance control with both sets of Apex PCs took about 15 minutes on the range and even with my simple little Burkes, after one trip to the range and 9 holes playing 2 balls, club selection was pretty easy - 1 club more than I'd use with my Titleists - pretty much exactly 1 club throughout the set for two sets irons forged by different people in different eras. When I looked at my notes I was blown away. The low MOI on the Burkes is like walking on a tight rope, but when I fiinally hit one squarely at the pin, it was a very pleasant surprise. EDIT: I was searching for a true 'backup set" for my Mizunos and almost settled on a couple, but really found it in the Cleveland TA1s. Along the way I found out I like to mix it up. Next season I might have the TA1s in the bag for most handicap rounds.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

I just retired my TM Rac TP irons to be a backup set, my game just isn't ready for irons like that. My wilson staff pi7's are my full time gamers now. I decided that I'll just play the Rac's in the middle of the summer when I'm playing alot and I'm feeling sharp. I can get away with much more sloppiness with the W/S clubs. And It's nice having a backup set for friends to use.

Interesting, actually this is what spawned my idea for the thread. I've been thinking of getting a back up set but also with the intent on just using something different every now and then. I gave away my complete Wilson Deep Red set to a friend who is just starting out but I would take those to the range or the par 3 every now and then to change things up. I've been perusing the Callaway pre-owned site the past couple days and there are a couple sets I'd be interested in.

I have a bunch of putters but I rarely switch them out. Although, I have a really really awesome one that is en route that should change that.

Yes I will admit to having 4 full sets. I buy used sets and rebuild them for fun. Anyway I switch them up on a regular basis. It's fun for me to play with different sets with their strengths/weaknesses. They range from super game improvement irons---Nike slingshots to a set of MP-14s blades. 4 different breeds of Scotty putters. Ping/TM/component drivers. Vokey/Reid Lockhart/Maruman wedges. Nike hybrids. TM/Nike/Cleveland/Nike fairway woods. 4 different carry bags for the above

It may be a sickness but it is enjoyable.

I have back up everything:

Driver - I switch all the time, I even have two have the same head so I can test shafts against each other

Metal - I seemed to play with the same selection, but I often add or drop from my 5 wood, or drop 3 and 5 and add a 4

Hibred - I switch allot - maybe every 20 rounds

Irons - I play them for a year or two and then buy new gamers and sell my old ones. My back up are an older set that have little value, so I keep them around for times when my irons are in the shop are I am waiting for a re-grip to dry or something. I do keep my back up 7 iron in my trunk for range sessions on the fly

Wedges - Once and a while I use my back ups

Putters- I have five nice ones, but have switched in in 200 rounds
Driver R7 Superquad NV 55 shaft or Bridgestone J33 460 NV 75 shaft
3 and 5 Wood X

All the time.

I have a set at my parents place and several at home. I basically practice with blades and play with game improvement irons.

It gets stale with the same clubs after a couple of years. A new look is a nice refresher.

I find it a tad harder to adjust to different woods and drivers than the irons, but I like using different equipment.

I play the piano and have played on many pianos - teachers, friends and access to music schools. You have to adjust and adapt and I think that carries over to other things.

Besides my current bag and clubs, I have the following sets and bags:
* MacGregor MT irons (1973) and woods (circa 1980), in vintage late 1970s bag.
* Pro Tour irons (Ping Eye2 clones) custom fit for me in 1994, and some graphite shafted woods (circa 2000): Air Zevo driver, Tour Edge 3W and 5W.

I keep these mainly for historical purposes, and show them to beginners interested in late 1900s club design.

I don't play them because both mixes have stiff shafts, and I can't bend them well enough to use them any more. (Also, I foolishly left the MacGregor woods in a hot garage for a couple of summers, and I'm afraid the heads might break if I hit them)

Focus, connect and follow through!

My second set is a set of '79 Wilson Staff Tour Blades my dad bought for me in college. I play them frequently when playing casual rounds and will be rotating them in as my main gamers now that "scramble season" is over. I have an assortment of persimmon and older steel shafted metal woods that I use with them, but pretty much use my same wedge and putter.

I am not really "worthy" of the blades, but just enjoy them and the connection to the "old ways".

My back up set consists of a 3-SW Ping Eye2 and Taylormade woods from the 80's or 90's. Those are the clubs that I learned on a few years ago. I've played the set once last year while I sold my gamers and was still waiting for my new set to arrive. Couldn't hit them for the life of me.

    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
    • Please forgive the sweaty shirt.  Just got off the treadmill and decided to do my Evolvr drill.
    • I'd agree that 4w seems like the right play here. I'm not a course designer or anything but that hole looks like it could be so much more fun if everyone played from those front 2 tee boxes that are right outside your shot cone and they cut down most of the trees down that left side of the fairway. That would give risk reward to long hitters who want to try and push it up to that left fairway, allow more players to reach that second fairway, and still allowing it to be perfectly playable for someone who only hits driver like 150yds off the tee.   Yeah it looks like 4iron aimed at that inside edge of the right bunker is the play there, especially if you don't expect a 20mph tailwind again. If it is down wind again, 5iron would be just fine too, it'd still get you inside 150yds for your approach.  Keep in mind tee marker locations too, you measured that one from the back so if those tee markers are moved all the way towards the front of that box then 5 iron is probably best just to be sure that right bunker is never in play.
    • Day 1: worked on my drill for my arms.
    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
