Best GPS please

I'm looking to get a GPS for x mas or over winter. I've seen Callway has the go pro. And sky caddie has some new sgx model... I don't know much abut them bit I want the best. I use my eve droid phone but I'm tired of it dying on my and I wanna keep track of fairways greens and putts. So you guys got any advice on them. Thanks

I love my Golf Logix. $198 at Amazon and about 300 reviews there as well. Gives me all the info I need and no BS. Waterproof and durable, I clip mine on my golf bag, check yardage while I pull the club. That is it. Holds 20 courses of my choosing. Absolutely love it. Simple and effective.

I have an Android HTC Desire, and find "Golfshot GPS", more than adequate as a GPS and for my needs and it seems extremely accurate too - would definitely recommend it! It does the following...

- GPS of course + markers etc
- Scorecard (emails you your scores too)
- Tracks statistics (FIR, GIR, Scrambling, Sand Save, Total Putt, PPGIR, score breakdowns per par)
- Automatically calculates running handicap off each round (USGA, EGA, CONGU, RCGA, AUS)
- Ability to track distances on a per shot basis (e.g. see how far your drive went)

I use my car charger to make sure it's charged on the way to the course. Before the round I quickly turn off wi-fi and auto synch to conserve battery life (1 button click to do this - no hassle at all!) and it's good to go. Battery life is more than adequate for 18- 27 holes and it only cost £19 (29/30$)!! Excellent value!

Definitely take a look if anyone already has an android device or an iphone (and no I'm not paid commission )

I have the Garmin Approach G5. So far no problems. It seems to be built pretty solid, rainproof too.
I bought mine from Amazon for $280. Amazon is a good site to read reviews on all the different models.

I have had a few different models. First I had the Golflogix, the 7 version and then upgraded to the 8 version. Solid, very stable and does what it needs to do. I was a bit annoyed at the subscription, but it was reasonably good value and they did respond quickly for new course requests.

Then I found a SkyCaddie SG5 at a good price and it had extra features like scorecard stats, more feature details etc and I used it for most of this year. But, when I did some work in Europe I realized I would need to upgrade my subscription to include European courses, so I ended up not using it for most of my final 2010 rounds. So I finally got annoyed with the subscription model and now have a Garmin G5 on the way.

My friend uses the Golflogix app on his blackberry and he loves it except for the fact that it eats battery power and it almost has "too many" features - so much so his pace of play is actually slowing down and now he uses less of the functions.

So for me the Garmin G5 has the features I want - good reliable GPS performance, good course selection (ie everything I play), score card/stats feature and small or no subscription. The G5 has no subscription UNLESS you want European courses and since I don't have a basic subscription fee this sold it for me with the G5.

But I haven't used the G5 yet so I have no real idea if I made the right decision - but based on reviews, I think it is the right GPS for me.

best gps is LASER .. haha.. thats my opinion.. i really think lasers are more advantageous to gps.. more accurate and you can tag whatever you want and get exact distance accurate to within 3 feet.

I bought a charger and 2 batteries for 11 clams delivered. Now when it gets low I just switch the batteries out and when you start Golf Logix back up it allows you to just continue. They also have a web page for you to upload scores and manage a handicap with multiple courses. Check it out.

I have the SkyCaddie SG2.5 and find it to be perfect. Battery lasts 2 full rounds and then some, it's small, just gives me the yardages I need (no fancy graphics or whatnot). Haven't tried any of the other brands, though I have used Golfshot on my iPhone. It's been pretty accurate to my SkyCaddie but the battery gets trashed quick.

Been thinking of going with a laser as out_in_30 suggested. Maybe next year.

Sonocaddie, very expensive, but it's by far the best GPS on the market imho.

I have the HTC evo droid phone and tried a few apps on there. The free caddie one is nice for green distance but sucks my battery down. I tried the golf logix one day but it really sucked the juice out and takes to long during play to use. I'm really trying to find one that gives me good layup yardage and of course distance to pin not just the green. I do have an extra phone battery but don't know which app to use for the droid.

I bought a SkyCaddie SG5 but only got to use it a few times so I can't give you an indepth review. Being a newbie, I mainly got it to see how far I was hitting from shot to shot. Once you sink the putt (button), it will take you to the next hole with par and handicap info. If not playing holes in order, it will let you easily select which one you want. The next screen lets you input your score, number of putts, and fairway hit/miss/left/right. The next screen will bring up the score. After that, your right back to the beginning looking at the next holes yardage information. I think the only stats this model keeps is putts, fairways, and shot distance. I'm not sure if the SGX has more stat info. I do know that it has fancier graphics.

I'm on the fence about upgrading my phone to a droid type. Mainly would be used for internet use on the road besides the calling features. I keep hearing dead battery stories.

I'm not up on lasers for golf, only guns. lol Do they have models that keep score, stats, etc along the way?

I am hoping they come out with adjustable points for lay up positions on the golf logix soon. Some of the phones can do it. I do not find it long to use. The only thing I didn't care for was using the putting outcomes, those were a hassle. Other than that you can shut off whatever you do not use statistics wise. I do not find it perfect but for the price of a round of golf a year I do not complain.

I have two GPSs collecting dust in my cabinet now, since I purchased my laser. I wish I had purchased it first, I would have saved the money from the two GPS units for other gear. No the laser unit does not keep score but it is so much easier to use, numbers are more accurate, and I can measure distances of things a GPS can't. The only drawback on the laser is it is line of sight. If you must get a GPS the SG5 and SGX are good choices, though the subscriptions are annoying.

Lasers are not good for some who play courses that you can't see the pin or hazards. GPS is more convenient for some because they don't have the steady hands to laser a flag.

Smartphone GPS, I find to be erratic so I don't use Golfshot/Golflogix on my iPhone. I find those cart GPS quite convenient though, drive up and it pops out a yardage to the pin position for that day. If I would suggest one I'd say the uPro from Callaway since its compact, colorful, and quite easy to use.

the bigger question is what kind of features do you want it to have? All the bells and whistles or simply yardage. All I wanted was yardage to pin. Keep it simple stupid philosophy lol. So i opted for the izzo swammi. It works perfectly for that. It does have a fee 9.99 per year but if you don't change out the courses you don't have to re-up. Also you can find it for 89.99 online. I wad going to buy the calloway but many of the backwoods courses I play were not in their database . The swammi had them. Also it lasts 3+ rounds on one charge. I have found the yardage to be on with course markings.

Laser it is then for accuracy to pin

I'm personally a fan of KISS (keep it simple, stupid). The more you complicate things, the more time you waste fiddling with your toy and the less time you have to just enjoy playing golf. Not to mention pissing off the guys you're playing with and the groups behind you when they get tired of watching you play with your toy instead of hitting the ball when it's your turn.

With the laser you take one or two quick sightings and you have all the info you need. With a basic GPS, all it takes is a quick glance at the screen and you're ready to go. My GolfLogix does NOT have all the bells and whistles (I have no need of them, that's what the paper scorecard is for), but I rarely have to do anything but look at the screen once the round has started. It advances as I do and always keeps me current without pressing any buttons. And the new Energizer lithium AA batteries last for 5 - 7 rounds between changes.

Whatever you get, learn to use it wisely. Don't be scrolling through the pages trying to enter data when you ought to be hitting the ball. Get the distance, hit the ball, then play with other stuff while waiting for others to hit. Guys who can't figure this out give all rangefinding devices a bad name, even though the problem isn't with the device, but with the user.
