I've always thought I've been a good member of the forum, but the little urine stained ball underneath my name is saying otherwise.  I don't have an ego and I don't care if I don't have 8 golf balls teed up under my name, but the negative nonsense underneath my name is quite irritating.

You can scan through my post history and you won't find a single negative post.

As you can see on the wiki, you only need to have a value less than 10 to get that yellow dot.

I did some checking and you got one negative reputation comment, resulting in -2. Harmonious gave you a +1, so you have 9. I looked up the old reputation data and the comment was simply "poor post" and the post ID was 514772. Then I looked up the old post (I have the old vBulletin database on my local machine), and your post was:

"160ish yards.  I hit my 6 iron very well for my handicap."

http://thesandtrap.com/forum/thread/39303/what-s-your-bread-and-butter-yardage#post_514772

Since that comment doesn't seem appropriate, I've removed the -2 and you now sit at 11.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, wonder what the heck that was all about with the negative rep for my 6 iron comment.  Like I said, I just didn't want to look like a bad apple for no reason.

I goofed up on leaving a comment just now repping iacas last post above.  I accidentally clicked out of the little box.  Should have said "Thanks for the help and great investigative work."  I didn't think it 'saved' the rep as soon as I clicked the thumb.

Yeah, you don't have to leave a comment, but I hope most people will and want to encourage it.

I must admit I've never really bothered about (i.e. really taken notice of) reputation features in forums I'm active in (this one, general aviation, motorcycles).  Maybe it's a bit of the old "I'd never join a club that would have me as a member" sort of mentality on my part, or just "who cares what other people think, I am who I am".  Anyway I read Erik's link and the philosophy behind the new system does makes sense, trying to encourage thoughtful and witty/interesting posts and discouraging negativity.  Downright nasty or offensive posts are probably best dealt with by admin anyway (i.e. Erik).  We won't always agree with individual decisions but it's fine really as long as intentions are good.

Maybe I'll take more notice of the rep system now, and maybe even give some credit when I think it's due.

Please do, yes. I think having the reputation be "positive only" is a good thing. We didn't see a lot of negative votes before, but enough... it's easy - click a thumbs up logo, type something, and you're done.

  • 1 month later...

The only issue I have with the new reputation is how the negative reputation just kind of pops up on me...

Not that I'm complaining about my current state, but I hadn't posted frequently in weeks and come back on to a negative rep.

It'd be really helpful if people like me could be informed what we are doing wrong in order to correct it as soon as possible.

You don't have a negative reputation, and there's no way to get negative reputation anymore.

You have 10 "points" or "skins" right now. You have a +2 via thumbs up and a -2 that pre-existed.

You have an infraction warning was well for your comments (which you know about), but that doesn't count for anything and is just a warning anyway.

I think its good that negative rep isnt on the forum here anymore. Ive seen it many places and the only way it can be used properly is when there is a list of rules posted that would fall under negative point worthy instead of difference of opinion and what not (which seems to be the majority of the negative)

Just out of interest, what happened to the skins detail link that you used to be able to click through in your own profile/stats next to each post?

I still see the link. You don't? It should only show up on your posts, I think.

For a day or two you couldn't click the link under my avatar and the link was gone from the My Profile page as well. It's fine now though.

Turns out something was re-set. As an admin I can always see mine. I changed it from "Admin-Only" back to "Private" (i.e. everyone can click their own). Thanks for pointing it out. Still finding my way around some of the settings here... not sure why that one would have gotten re-set, but it's now been re-re-re-re-set. Or something. ;-)

    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
