I went to the golf course today, i was allowed to tee of the back nine, the front side was backed up a bit, but overall the course was really empty. So i do, and i tee of when another group was on the ninth tee. So i basically would be one hold ahead of them. As i walk towards my ball, one of the guys asks if i would wait and let him join me. I said no, that i wanted to just keep playing on. So I do, and i keep ahead of him all round, as much as whole hole. Then i get to the 18th, its a short part 4, i am in the fairway and he jacks a drive over my head. He knows i am there, its an elevated tee box and you can see the whole hole from there. So we getinto a bit of a yelling spat, a few selective words were said, i got a bit hot blooded at that moment. But i could have been injured if he hit me, and he knew what he did. So, i approach the green and he approaches me saying i don't know etiquette, that i should have waited to let him pass before teeing off on number 10. That he is going to have me banned from the golf course, that i was waisting time looking at basketball games on my cellphone instead of playing golf. For one thing, i was checking my phone while i walk to my ball, so i waste no time. Second, i was ahead of him the whole round, until he rushed to hit into me. IF he had a problem with me cutting infront of me, he should have just told me so as we passed, instead of being pissed off that i didn't want to play with him. Then he claims i don't know etiquette on the golf course when he HIT INTO ME. God, i haven't been that pissed off in a long time. People like him shouldn't play golf.

On a positive note, i shot 3 over par for my first 9 holes of the year, and it was a gorgeous day out.

Sounds like he was being spiteful and was looking for a reason to get even with you after you didn't allow him to join up.  Don't sweat it, and if anything you could have him "banned" from the course for hitting into you.  Arguing the semantics of course etiquette is one thing, but hitting into a person because they didn't replace a divot or took too long on a particular hole is inexcusable.

One thing I don't get though: was the guy who asked to join up with you a member of the group that was teeing off on 9, and he left that group to catch up to you, or was he a single in front of that group?

The way I see it, you just pissed him off by refusing his very reasonable request to join you.  If it had been me I'd have thought you quite rude for your attitude.  If you didn't want to play with him, then why didn't you just let him pass and eliminate any possible bad feelings right from the start.  Not that I condone his hitting into you, but you set the scenario in motion when you denied his request.

Well he was paired with a guy on the front nine who was playing only nine holes. So he tole me that and asked me if could join me on the back, i said no. He seemed to get pissed of about this, but i wouldn't have thought he would purposely hit into me like that. I wouldn't have cared if he just came up to me afterwards and talked to me, if he thought i did something wrong out there, but he basically attempted to assault me.

I didn't let him pass because i would have been pushing him all round. If he was faster than me, he could have asked me on the next hole to pass, but i never held him up ever. Then he rushes up the 18th tee and hits into me. That is just stupid.

Since he was making the turn, You should have asked him if you could have joined him. A guy making the turn should have the right to the tee. Saying that,he has no right to hit into you. The way I see it, both of you showed poor etiquette.

I agree with all of that.

If he was able to "catch you" enough to hit into you on the ninth hole, he couldn't have been that far behind.

I guess, but honestly i never heard of the right to the tee if your just starting the 9th hole. I learn something new, and he could have just explained that kindly to him. I really don't have to let someone join me or not. I have the right to play as a single if i want to. It was a nice day i wanted to be out there and just play a leisurely game of golf. It was that until he tried to inflict bodily harm on me. I could care less if he yelled in my backswing, but i do not accept any form of hitting into someone.

To be perfectly blunt, no, you don't. It's not a "right" at all, and a golf course is well within its rights to ask you to pair up.

He must not have been a whole hole behind you since he was able to hit into/over you. I don't condone that act at all, but you aren't fault-less here either. That's all anyone's saying. You unwillingly titled the thread perfectly.

I don't agree with calling saevel25 a hypocrite for not wanting to play golf with someone else. The 'golf course' was not asking golfers to pair up as the course was relatively empty. You cannot compare somebody wishing to play a quick 9 holes on their own with somebody firing a golf ball at someone. For that, there is no excuse.

Having said that, it appears to me that you didn't have an entire hole between you and the group behind. How could they have played the entire 9th hole quicker than you played your tee shot and reached your ball? I think you should have waited to tee off behind them saying you were 'waiting for someone' if you really didn't want to play with them. Then, if the lone golfer turned out to be really slow asked him if you could play through.

I have to say that a person who insists on playing on his own, rejects reasonable requests from others and holds up the field and then strolls around looking at his phone wouldn't be rated too highly in my neck of the woods.

If you want to play on your own, go to the practice tee, unless there's none else around.

And if someone asks you to play with them politely accept the invitation.

Interesting that you claim a "score" whilst playing as a single, too.

I don't have a problem with that. Either you play by the rules or you don't.

Not really the topic though.

If I didn't claim a score whilst playing as a single, I'd hardly ever post scores.

However, while I normally play as a single, if someone wants to join me, I'm all for it.  It is a social game.  Typically it's me that's asking to join though, I think that most people assume that if you're playing alone, you want to play alone.  That's not the case with me, I just work a different schedule than the people who I golf with.

I have to add that someone making the turn has priority over a 9 hole player on an course I've ever played at.   When I'm working in the starter booth, I won't allow a 9 hole player to start if I have a group playing up on the 9th hole.  We call that a "squeeze", and we don't do it except in certain very special circumstances.  A single will either be required to join a short group or he will wait until there is a gap.  We don't do free for alls on our course.  On a busy day, I will not put anyone on the back nine after the first 18 hole group makes the turn unless I know that I have plenty of room between groups on the turn.

Well yes i understand that, but behind him was no one, really it was a very sparce day on the course. The starter new this sending me back there. I didn't think i was infringing on that person, and if i ever end up there again i will let him play through first before setting off. If there was a group behind him i might have joined up with him. I was by myself, and i caught up to a foursome on near the 17th hole. So, there was no one out there at all. I see i did do something that would be considered rude, but that doesn't excuse a guy from doing something very dangerous, though unlikely he could hit me, there is that chance i could have been injured.

I appreciate the opinion, thanks, i will remember that next time.

From what I make of it you are entirely in the right on this. You have the right to golf with whom you please-including yourself. And there is NEVER a good excuse to hit into someone...especially when you were so clearly in sight.

Guess I would have said, "Sure, join me, as long as you're okay with me playing at a quick pace." In that way, you're warning him that  you play fast. As to the phone, don't walk and web. You're giving the guy an excuse to get pissed off.

Clearly this guy is in the wrong for intentionally shooting into you. No excuse for that under and circumstances. I do like the odd game when I get the chance to play on my own, but that's a luxury on the golf course. Still not clear why you didn't accept and invite him to play with you. Sometimes you get paired up with some real wads, but my experience is that most people you meet for the first time on the course are pretty ok.

I am a very personal person. I don't like to put myself out there to people i don't know. Honestly it was a nice day out, i just wanted to enjoy the day, i really just find it peaceful to just play golf and be out there on a golf hole by yourself. Its very spiritual for me, and very calming. I can understand that, hey your by yourself lets play. Today i didn't feel like it. Now i have been stuck betweeen groups, and joined up with a twosome or threesome that has caught up to me before. But honestly i like playing golf by myself.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
