What is your "magic" distance or club for approach shots?

Is there a distance at which you like to set yourself up? For example, if I know I can't reach a par 5, or if it's a shorter par 4, I try to smooth an iron to around 145 so I can hit a full gap wedge in, rather than risk mis-hitting a long iron or wood trying to set up a pitch and ending up with an unfamiliar shot. What do you folks like to do?

I'm not going left or right of those trees, ok? I'm going over those trees...with a little draw.

100 yards on the dot is a good yardage for me. I just try to shy away from anything 50-80 yards as that is an awkward distance for me because it is much less than a full shot.

I know the feeling. I have a dead zone between about 60 and 100; my long pitch shot and three quarter sand wedge, which oddly enough I'm pretty comfortable with.

So many times yesterday was I just so impressed with my drive on par 4's leaving myself well past my comfortable 100 yard shot only to try and take 20 percent off and come up 20 yards short. Made me so mad that birdie chances were flying away (pun intended)

To OP: I love that 100 yard shot but I am pretty comfortable up to about 150. But depending on what kind of shot your talking about I am probably going for it. If Im 300 away I might try and crank a 3 wood and get to pitching distance because thats where I am best but if im 230 I am gonna club down and just try and get as close as possible while staying in the fairway hopefully rolling up.

I seem to be a lock from 110-115 (smooth GW) and 235 (stock 2-hybrid).  Everything else is a crap shoot.

And no, that is not a sarcastic post.

75 - 95 with a 54 degree Gap Wedge.    Perfect for around the greens as well because it has a nice amount of run for anything less than a lob shot.

I played 9 holes late in the afternoon yesterday and the course was running nice and hard so I had 5 of these shots as approach shots on par 4 and par 5 holes.

i just recently got a new set of irons so i'm still in the learning process, but i'm inclined to say 110.  with my old clubs it was about 105.

125 is a great PW.

Honestly I just get the ball as close to the hole as possible on every shot (If hazards allow and whatnot)

I'm usually not the guy that has a dead on 240 in and says "nah ill just use my PW twice"  I usually pull out the 4i and let one fly.  Of course if i have to lay up then i will, but if it is reasonable, I go for it.

I'm a good chipper from 50yds in, so that may be the reason?

I guess most people hae 60 to 80 yards ( distace from   a half to full swing ) as their non comfortable zone , same here too.

On a par 5 (or a par 4 I screwed up the tee shot on :-P), I try to leave myself with 105 yards which is a solid PW for me. I have an AW and have recently gotten a 56* and 60*, but once I get lower than 80 yards left I have a tough time getting the right feel.

Do they each have phoenix feathers in them?  No wonder they are so pricey!

My magic distance(s) are 90 for a 3/4 56* and 130 for a full PW.

As a general rule, I'm a believer that closer is always better. If I had to pick a club and yardage though, I really like a nice little 85 yd sand wedge.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
