was playing a fairly challenging course this past weekend. (around 7000 yards from the tips).

the 2 groups in front of us were casual golfers at best. they struggled to consistently get the ball in the air and had horrible slices. However, they decided to play the tips. Some tee shots required a 180-200 yard to the fairway and they often weren't close. These guys weren't having fun. Obviously it was way too much golf course.

this happens so many times, it is my new pet peeve. not sure who i dislike more, the guys who continally play above their head or the course rangers who like them.

I agree totally. I am just a beginner (only been playing seriously for 4 months) and I check my ego at the door when it comes time to tee off. I'll play with friends who are hitting from the blue tees and I have no problem walking up to the whites and hitting from there.

I can hit the ball a good distance (about 260 with a pure driver shot), but my swing is so inconsistent right now, that I will often bag the driver and tee off with a five wood or even a 21d hybrid. Playing from the whites allows me to play within myself. I just don't see how people can enjoy playing golf hitting from tees that are beyond their skill level.

You would think that at some point they would have moved up to a more suitable tee box.

Early this year we played a course that we usually play from the tips. It was early in the season, windy, a little chilly and the course was wet. After 2 holes we moved our butts up to the next tees.....those first 2 holes played like 50+ yards longer than usual!!

My advice is to ask those guys to let you play through them. Or, if they are fairly new golfers and it is evident, just tell them you're gonna play through them on the next hole. Then, enjoy watching them shank their shots until you can pass them. Getting upset at something like this only makes you look like an arrogant @ss, regardless if what they are doing is frustrating or not.

I've noticed this a number of times as well; in my experience, I notice it more when guys are playing a 'resort' course, or one of 'Golf Gigest 100' courses. I'm not sure if these guys want to say "I played it from where the Pros play", but it's pretty dumb.

In March of this year I played Tierra Del Sol in Aruba twice. One time the group ahead of us was playing from the tips, and once from the blues (we played the whites both times). Not to sound crass, but they had no business playing from those tees. Anyway, we did not complain, and just proceeded to enjoy the beautiful scenery for 5 hours...

People playing from the tips when they can't break 100 don't have any business back there, especially if they can't hit the long ball. I myself usually play from the whites, but I'll play from the blues sometimes - it doesn't really matter to me. My score is pretty consistent reguardless which tees I hit it from, because I have a good long game, but can't chip and putt. If someone hits the ball a long way, I don't care which tees they hit from.

However, when someone tops, chunks, skulls, and shanks their way down each fairway, they have no business hitting from the tips. It's one of those annoying contributors to slow play.

My personal best (from the whites) is 81. Normally, I am in the high 80s.

I tell people when I start routinely shooting in the low to mid-seventies, I'll think about moving back to the blues, but not 'til then.

overall score doesnt matter to me as long as they can hit a drive about 250-260 and straight then im ok with them on the blues. if they do that and shank up and hit 105 shots a round, thats fine as long as they arent spending time covering the 25 yards extra. if they tee off from the reds and still need 5 shots around the green, they arent saving much time at all.

My friend totally plays above his head and he acts like shooting 3 over isnt even good. When he cheats to acheive that score. It makes me so angry i want to tell him off. He makes good shots and acts like they were nothing. I cant stand a person like that. The fact that he cheats also gets me soo pissed off.

The ONLY reason I play from the blue tees is that our high school golf tournaments are played from them and I could use the practice.

Blacks, whites, yellow's. Im not sure what traditional color is for "tips". The longest course in my immediate area is 7,000 from the "tips" and it is extremely tight. The "Tips" at this course are yellow, then you have blues, then whites, then ladies. I play at the yellows unless im playing with a buddy who is a 14 handicap or higher. I cant remember what the slope is their but the best I've shot is 76 from the yellows and unfortunately you get alot of folks I feel shouldnt even be playing the course.. period.

Its an issue at all course's though. I've had 2 groups of non-english speaking races, together but playing in 2 groups of 4.. not let me play through as a single. Eventually on the 11th after waiting for 15 minutes on each hole after catching up with them on 8, I just walked off the course in frustration.

Slow play and just plain disregard of rules and inconsideration for others is an issue for me and sometimes it takes every bone in my body not to do or say something I probably shouldnt.

dont play as a single, I know it sucks becauseit happens to me quite often but sometimes (especially if its during pea hours) its rude for you to go out there as a single and expect to plya through, when everyone is on each others ass. I dunno why that slow play thread got closed. Iacas siad something about 3 hours for 18 in scotland or you are kicked off, thats a load of bull ive played plenty of times in ireland and thats never the case, and i really doubt theres that much of a difference. The problem with golf here is tht you have singles or twosomes that think they should be alowed to go on the course and breeze through their rounds at peak hours, courses need to pair these people up if they like it or not, if you play as a single in the evening or super early then its all fine, but dont act like 4 hours is slow when you are plying in a 4some and you have to look for balls and hit provisionals, not to mention having to wait behind (not standing behind them like some people) for some people in your group to hit. However, ya theres people who shouldnt plya from the tips sometimes that do, however some of these guys who play from the white try to just cut infront of you on the Tee because they assume that no one plays from the blues or tips, that shit gets annoying.

I agree with your friend. If I couldn't shoot under par when I cheat, I'd be pissed too.

As an average player (just started playing last year) I only play the furthest tees if the course is really short. If the course is over 6500 yds from the 2nd to furthest tees, I will play those. But, if the course is like 5900 yds from the 2nd to furthest tees, I will play the furthest. I like courses that are challenging length wise, I'm not a big fan of 300 yd par 4's and 125 yd par 3's, and 475 yd par 5's.

Singles have no standing, and if there's nowhere to go, I agree that you shouldn't play through.

I played as a single in about two hours today. I played through about 7 foursomes and threesomes over a span of holes 1-14.
I dunno why that slow play thread got closed.

Because there was no value in it. The "enjoy the view" people are selfish, and there's no reason to continue that discussion.

but dont act like 4 hours is slow when you are plying in a 4some and you have to look for balls and hit provisionals, not to mention having to wait behind (not standing behind them like some people) for some people in your group to hit.

Four hours is fine. 4.5 is not. And nobody here is dumb - we can all recognize when one foursome is waiting on another, you can't really blame the ones waiting. You can only blame the ones ahead, or the ones ahead of them, or whomever is causing slow play to begin with, because as I've said, it's only one group that holds everyone else up.

Four hours is reasonable in the U.S. (I wish it was faster), but any more and you're pushing it. I don't care what time of day it is.

kinda surprised noone is blaming the golf courses for this. A couple courses i've played will basically dictate which tees you play based on handicap. (e.g. you can't play the tips unless you are a single digit handicap). I think more courses should do this.

I appreciate when courses do this. If you can't reach the fairway on every hole with your drive, and you hit it reasonably well, you're playing from the wrong tees.

Courses have become too caught up, like rangers, in the whole "the customer is always right" crap. It's crap, because when they're playing slow, they aren't right, and the feelings of the other 50 golfers they're holding up should be considered as well.

How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
