Arnold at the Father / Son or Daughter Challenge

Watched a bit of the scrambe yesterday.  Nicklaus was playing very well and is on the leaderboard.  Palmer was showing his age and it appeared he was either mad or sad about the quality of his game and inability to compete.  I felft bad for him on 18 because it did not look like Arnie was enjoying himself and what could be one of his last rounds with Jack.  As much as Arnie loves golf and likely understands his limitations, his desire to compete appears even greater. That is what made him a great champion.

I saw him on some show where he said he watched a video of his swing recently (as in, the past few years) and he was disgusted and refused to do that every again . clearly he has lost some flexibility.

Yeah.. Arnie is really showing is age.. BUT, he likes the attention and fame..  He's starting to be golf's version of Dick Clark.. There comes a time you just need to retire and move on, and stop being a celebrity.. But can their ego's let them?

No.  Arnie hasn't had 47 face lifts and skin died orange.  I think Dick Clark actually died about 20 years ago and they just did a "Weekend at Bernie's" thing to keep the image up.

 

Arnie is the elder statesman of the game.

ive never liked arnie.  theres something about him that just doesnt sit right with me.  jmho, he seems condescending and arrogant.  again, jmho...

No, not joking. It's just the impression I've always had, like the public Arnie isn't the real Arnie, and the real one is a jerk. This is, of course, not based on anything concrete...

I don't understand why people make judgements about others based on absolutely nothing. I'm sure Arnold's not perfect but by all accounts and for the 55 year's he's been in the spotlight he's been known to be friendly gracious and a fine person.

Except when it comes to promoting his own tourney at the expense of the Disney one..  Rumor had it that Arnie was very aggressive in the Orlando area, in sucking up most of the golf sponsors and $$$$$$..  Orlando was in no position to sponsor 2 major tourney's anymore.. Bye Bye Disney.. TY Arnie ..

I don't know the details but without any doubt the Bay Hill tournament has always had way more status than Disney. No doubt Arnie is a very powerful man and a tough businessman. That doesn't make him an arrogant jerk.

Amen to that.  Arnie's tournament at Bay to Disney's?  No contest - I'll take Arnie any time.  Palmer's contributions to golf as the preeminent ambassador for the game is a big reason why golf is where it is today.  Tiger grew up in the atmosphere that Arnie helped to create, and may owe many of his his opportunities to that.  Arnold Palmer was the face of golf when it was discovered by television, with Jack just beginning his run.  Much as I idolized him, Jack just didn't have the personality to carry the torch - Jack's popularity came from his play on the course while Arnie got the fans pumped up with his energy and style.  Arnie's personality brought golf out from behind the country club gates into the eye of the general public and made the game popular.  Arnie's Army, and large galleries in general, were a unique phenomenon at the time.  Every semi-serious player since the 1960's has benefited from Palmer's popularity in one way or another.

The way Disney has a damn stranglehold on this town, I say hell yeah to AP sticking it to them. Ask the merchants in downtown Orlando/Church Street back in the 90s how Disney single-handedly shut them down by creating Downtown Disney - they can't stand to see any other entity get the tourist bucks but them.

 

So, if it comes down to Arnie's Bay Hill Invitational or another reason for Disney to suck the tourist dollars thru 'their' tour event, Arnie gets my nod of approval.

 

And even at age 83, he could give Mickey three a side & kick that little rat's ass.
