When it comes to FWs, try to test them outdoors on grass. A clubfitter told me it's difficult to hit good shots off the fluffless turf mats indoors, and that hitting one off a 1/2" tall rubber tee doesn't really mimic hitting a shot "off the deck."

If you're a 1 HDCP, you should be trying different shafts from the fitting cart to see which one works best with a given head. Also, the different adjustable FWs allow you to do this with the club you actually buy.

If the 3W is the only fairway wood you carry, you might also try out a 4W. A pro I know says some scratch players with very flat attack angle may be able to get more distance out of a 4W than a 3W. (4W gets it airborne enough).

From the January golf expo, I liked the Callaway X.Hot and X.Hot Pro models. Also, the Nike Covert family deserves a look. Again, I only hit the Callaway and Nike indoors - the snow made the outside offlimits. And, test out the Tour Edge Exotics if you get a chance (and if you have $280 to spend).

Focus, connect and follow through!

I'd say Callaway X Hot/X Hot Pro, RBZ Stage 2/Stage 2 Tour or Adams Super LS -

The shafts on all of them are too long - so I'd buy from a real clubmaker who will hot melt, cut the length to 43 inches, and get you a decent shaft and swing weight.

I, along with many of my friends, went with the Rocketballz 3 wood. It is very easy to get the ball into the air, and the ball just springs off the face. Now, Im a mid handicap, but I do know many single digit players that also love this club.

Another vote for the xhot here :). I really like that thing ( don't own it yet but probably will soon). Also mulling the idea of getting a 5 wood too and scrapping the hybrid that I never use.

I hit the new ping g25 4w the other day and was immediately in love. It was at pings facility in Phoenix so it was on the launch monitors off of mats. That being said, I was seeing distances in the 240 carry range with a 4w. And it was pretty to look at, and easy to make solid contact. My swing speed with a 7 iron is around 90 and my carry with the 7 iron on the same monitor was around 170.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

The Ping fairway, either 3 or 4-wood is 43 inches long so you don't have to cut it down like you might want to with some of the other "longer" fairways.

Yeah i've really been wanting to try out the new nike's just love the way they look.  Also im really only interested in the way the 3 wood performs of the tee.  All the courses around me are fairly short and i hardly ever have to hit a 3 wood off the deck, (maybe once in the past year honestly)

give the titleist 913Fd a try. very smooth feeling club with plenty of length. just picked up a 43" 15* 913Fd with the Diamana D+ whiteboard in Stiff and was putting them out there 280yds after rollout and carrying it 260+.

Was at a demo day this afternoon and hit the XHot and RBZ Stage 2 -

I really like the XHot. Launched easily, felt hot all over the face and lively. The cup face seemed forgiving all over the face because I could not tell where I made contact.  Now reduce the shaft length about 3/4 inches and you've got a club.

I wasn't impressed by the Stage 2 Fairways - not as lively, did not launch as well.

Go XHot.

Either Titleist 913F or 913F.d depending on using it more off the tee v fairway and how far you hit it.

913F is best for all round play.

913F.d for longer hitters who use it more from the tee.

Either way get fitted on a launch monitor hitting it into a range rather than against a simulator wall.

I just picked up the RBZ Stage 2 Tour and like it a lot. I gained about 30 yards of carry compaired to my R9 but I have a pretty high swing speed.

Ill have to give the 913F.D a try, I'll be using the 3 wood mainly for the tee, and ive always loved the feel of titleist's woods

Since I am a club ho (in that I buy way too many golf clubs), I have had many different three woods since I started playing golf last June.  I started with an old Cobra 3w that I got from my uncle, then I bought a Taylormade Burner Superfast, then a TM Burner Superfast 2.0 TP 13.5 degree, then a R11s 3w 15 degree, and finally a TM Rocketballz 14.5 tour spoon 3w.

I really like the Rocketballz the best.  While not adjustable, I hit it longer and straighter than any of the others.  Since the stage 2 Rocketballz are out, good deals can be had on the original Rocketballz.

Was that off a mat or the deck or a tee?  I am going to get fit for the top of my bag soon.  I want to even out from my highest iron (4) to driver.  Not sure how I want to go but I would like something long off the deck.

    • I am a huge numbers guy and if a number can be applied to something, I want to know what it is.  Even in golf, I will pace off short chips as I have a 10 yard, 20 yard, and 30 yard shot whereas I take the club back a certain distance for each.  I have heard the comparison to basketball players that they do not know their exact distance to the basket, they just use their eye sight and adjust which I know a lot of golfers do as well when within a certain distance to the pin.  My question is, what is that distance for you?  I was at the range today and was hitting wayward  balls to a flag that I had no idea what it's exact distance was, I estimate that I was at times as close as 40 yards and as far away as 70 yards.  I was amazed at how accurate I was having not known the distance to the flag.  Temps me to not use my range finder within say 70 yards and go by look and feel.  What say you?
    • Well, it was yesterday but I shot an 88 at Lake Park GC in Lewisville, TX.
    • PXG Orlando, other locations I'm sure its the same, offers a full bag fitting for 25 bucks which is applied to purchase if you are a veteran or active duty, etc. Unfortunately I like my Titleist's.
    • Latest rumor is Clarkson, May and Hammond will have a new team on LIV.
    • That's not just sandbagging, that's cheating. Under Rule 3.3 for posting most likely scores, for example if there was a 2 foot putt for par, one can only take one extra stroke from what they lie, meaning par in that instance, not bogey. I didn't check the other instances but you can.
