Anything by Michael Chabon, http://michaelchabon.com/ , IMHO one the best writers around today.
If you like fantasy I highly recommend The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Extremely long and detailed but pretty incredible and well worth the investment of time, took me 18 years to read it due to it taking him 23 years to finish it (actually the last 3 books were completed after his death by another author working off of his extensive notes and story arcs). I have one book left to read, A Memory of Light, and I will be done. I have been holding off reading it because it will feel strange to finish a series of books that has been in and out of my life for nearly 2 decades.
And my favorite author of all time, John Irving. I consider John Irving to be one of the greatest authors of all time. Interesting fact about John Irving, he writes the last sentence of a novel first and then goes back and writes the rest leading up to this final sentence. He claims it's akin to remembering a story that has already happened. One day a fan approached him and said that he had heard about this and had started reading the last sentence of his novels first and then going back to the beginning, Irving was horrified and said, "oh no, don't do that!"
