I've got 13 clubs in my bag right now -

Driver, 3W, 3H, 5i, 6i, 7i, 8i, 9i, PW, 56degree wedge, 60degree wedge, my XAct chipper, and my putter.

My options for the 14th club is a 5W, 5H, 4i, or a 64degree wedge. Which club would you go with?

That's a big gap between your PW (probably 45 degrees) and your next wedge, the 56.  You might want to go with a 48 or 52 degree wedge to fill in that gap.

I second a GW, but assuming your PW is 45° or 46°, I think the GW should be 50°.

I'd try a 5 wood and see if that 3 wood needs to be in there.  Other than that...there is no reason to believe that 14 is better than 13...or 12, or 11, or 10.  It is better, for me, to play multiple shots with fewer clubs than to carry an extra just because I'm allowed to.  Personally...I'd rather carry a 4 iron than a 64.  If a 58, or 60, won't get the job done...I need to stay away from those places.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

Only because he already has a chipper in the bag, right? 😜

Exactly!

Now, dump the  60° wedge and put a 4-hybrid in the bag, and you’re done!  :-)

Some form of gap wedge would probably be your best bet. If you are playing modern GI irons, Most likely your PW is 44-46°. So I'd get 50° wedge and call it good.

Really looks like the only thing missing is the gap wedge.  But the difference between the 3h and 5i must be considerable.  There will be par 3s you will hate because of this.

Definitely consider a gap wedge with a lower bounce for flexibility around the green. A 50, 52, or even a 54 with 8-10 degrees of bounce could help. Traditional 56’s. An often have 12-14 degrees of bounce and are great for soft fluffy sand and thick rough.  A lower bounce 52 could help on those thinner lies or harder ground.

In the last few weeks, I've taken into account the comments on the thread. I have taken a closer look at the tools at my disposal, played some rounds with varying clubs, began to really focus on my lofts and keeping my gaps close and now my bag consists of my Driver, 3W, 21° 3H, 26° 5H, 6-9i, 48° PW, 52° AW, 56° SW, 60° LW, XAct chipper, and my putter. I feel this keeps my gaps close while still allowing me to stay within the 14 club limit and keep my chipper which has become an awesome tool for me around the green. I have found that this combination of clubs has yielded my best scores yet. I really appreciate the feedback!

I am sure that you just filled a big hole.  Let us know how this works out for you.

Over lots of time, if I were you, I would work in lots and lots and lots of practice with your various wedges (at the range) on chipping.  You eventually want to get rid of the chipper.  It will be superfluous, and it will free up another spot in the bag which you will eventually want.  Not to mention that it is not - strictly speaking - a legal club in all circles.

I'd take the chipper out of the bag pull the head off and use it to roast hot dogs over a campfire. I know there are a hundred threads on this. I also know that there are golfers out there who say "You'll have to pull my chipper from my cold dead hands." But I truly believe in about 15 minutes of practice you can learn to choke down on your hybrid and use it as well as your chipper. And in 30 minutes of practice you can learn to use your wedge as well as your chipper.

Pick up a 50 degree gap wedge and then look at the top end.

How far do you carry your 3W, your 3H and your 5Iron?

Based on that I'd look to fill in a club that fit what was missing up there.

But again, I'm anti-chipper-guy.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Careful there.  I think the guy is angling for a well-paid testimonial...

Phil says you should add a 2nd driver - 1 that is your bomber, and another that you can hit a cut with and keep in play.

Without knowing your wedge yardages it's hard to tell if you need another wedge but if you can chip with your hybrid, then you can dump the chipper and get another hybrid for the 3h-5i gap.

Then again if you add a 4h you will have to figure out which hybrid is best to use as a chipper...so just chip with your 3 wood. Well now that I've typed that I realize that maybe you need a 5 wood, and you could use that as a chipper, instead of the hybrid (and instead of the chipper)

Players play, tough players win!

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
