I searched around and there does not seem to be a thread on the Live View Sports Camera?  I am guessing I am not using the right terms because this camera has been out for a while.

I just bought one and have used it once for practice.  It is a clever solution to videoing yourself.  It also works as a mirror with lines.

An explanation of its functionality is it connects to your phone or tablet with its own wifi.  You place your phone or tablet down by the ball and can see what you are doing in practice motions.  Where it excels is that you can draw lines on the virtual mirror and check your movements.  Like swing plane, butt line....

The second thing it does really well is record when it hears impact.  So you only have a 4 second video for each swing.  The video quality is 60 FPS and OK, but it is good enough for what you need to see.  I used it inside with OK lighting and it was pretty good.

When I was searching this site I saw an app with similar functionality, I did not search deeply into that so my knowledge is limited.

It's $350 so not cheap but within my budget.  I am pleased with it.  Is there anyone else out there using this camera?

IMO 120 FPS is the table stakes and bare minimum.

What are you trying to see at 120 FPS that you can not see at 60?

Can you see wrist positions and club positions during the swing at 60? What about impact?

Twice as much.

The downswing occurs in about 0.2 to 0.25 seconds. Using 12 to 15 frames for the whole downswing misses a lot. Even at 240 FPS I don't quite get impact fairly often. At 1/4 that speed I might see the clubhead six inches on either side of impact but miss impact entirely.

Ok, I see.   I am very fortunate to have Foresight GC2 with HMT.  That gives me very accurate club head data and trying to see that in video is not something I need.

Like most things if it is difficult to do people won’t do it.  This makes video very easy for me.   So this is very beneficial to me.

What is the current best solution for 240fps?

I'm not talking about clubhead data.

Your phone.

And you've probably already bought it, so I just saved some people $350.

Apparently the Samsung Galaxy S20 does 960 FPS at 720p - pretty impressive!

Damn, couple more years and I'll update my Nokia 3310! 🤔 I want to see the ball getting compressed (10 000 fps):

I read something about that, I think it kicks in for you, you don't set it. And it's limited to 13 seconds? It could be another phone I'm talking about though.

I disagree with you on the Liveview camera.  I have no affiliation to the company at all.   My reasoning is simple.  For me and I will bet most people looking at gross details of their swing is the most important thing.  This camera at 60 fps is fine.  It is easy to use, so easy once you set it up you don't have to do anything.  You can put lines on the screen and use them for both the video and the mirror function when you try to feel the positions.  It starts and stops the recording so you don't get excess video.  Simply put I believe it is so easy to use that I will use it more then a cell phone setup.  Using a cell phone by yourself is difficult.

The greatest tool in the world is worthless if it is too difficult to use so you don't use it.  As an instructor you are in a totally different situation because you can handle the camera when the person is swinging and use a V1 type app.  You also can use the increased frame rate more then an average golfer taking video of their swing.  So respectfully I disagree with your dismissal of its usefulness for the average golfer.

And look, that's fine. But if you're trying to "win" here or something, it won't happen. And, despite how it might "seem," I'm not trying to "win" anything either. I'm just trying to get my point across. To that…

Sure. Some people don't need > 60 FPS. But what do you do when you do need more than 60? What do you do when you want to get impact to check Key #3 and you're only getting the clubhead a foot before or after the golf ball?

So are people's phones.

Here's what I recommend:

  • Use a tablet with your phone.
  • Get MirrorVision.

There you go - and even if you have to buy a cheap iPad or something (and then, bonus! you've got an iPad too) - for the cost of a Live View camera, you've got a better, more versatile setup that does 60 FPS… but also does 120, 240, 4K video (most smart phones), etc. And you have an iPad.

I gave a lesson to a 72-year-old guy that had videos of his swing on his phone. I don't think phones are as hard to use as you're making it out to be. And, you still have to use a phone, because the Live View is just the camera.

Sure. But also…

You get to, but again, I feel I've pretty effectively told you why I disagree with you:

  • It's a separate device. You have to specifically bring it with you. That's really not true of phones, which you tend to just always have with you.
  • It's limited to 60 FPS. I can record at 60 FPS on my phone if I want. But I have the option to go up should I ever want to.
  • It's got its own battery. More to worry about charging (most people know what their cell phone is, and have chargers for it lying about).
  • It's $350. For about that cost, you can get a new iPad mini, or a slightly older generation iPad. And then, you've got an iPad too!
  • MirrorVision and other apps out there do all that the Live View app does, so you're not losing out on anything there.

Again, man, you can disagree.

But so can I. 🙂

P.S. Even if you don't want more than 60 FPS, @inthecup, if you're posting a video even to the Member Swings section of the site, others appreciate the faster frame rate, even if you just want to focus on the "macro" stuff.

I disagree with this. If you’re going to film your swing at all, why do it at such a low frame rate?

Most people don’t even bother filming to begin with.

I bought a GorillaPod and a Joby phone mount to go on top of it. The whole setup cost like $40 or something and it fits in my bag, which means I can film pretty much anywhere I want.

I second MirrorVision. It works well. They are working on a update for landscape mode, which will help with uploading. If you already have an iPad and iPhone, it is a great combination for $25 per year.

I read something awhile back about an Android version, but maybe I heard wrong. No Android as far as I can see.

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
