I have acquired a set and would like to deloft these clubs 2-3 deg.

Those lofts are appropriate for the technology of that time. Play them as they are. 🙂

I don't know much on club bending, but I did pull out my old Eye2 3 iron after Hybrid frustration. It has me thinking of going back to 1990s tech and reshafting the 5 that caused me to get new irons in the first place. Agree with the guys that said leave it alone.

You’ll mess up the bounce going 2-3 degrees.

I actually played a few rounds with the new lofts and haven't noticed any major bounce difference.

In my experience 2 degrees is safe, and 3 degrees may be pushing it a bit.

Hi All,

I'm thinking of making some adjustments to a set of Ping Eye 2 irons that I have acquired.

I would like to extend the existing steel ZZ-lite shafts, which I love, by 1", and deloft all the clubs by 3-4 degrees.

What are your thoughts on increasing distance through club lengthening and delofting?

Why de-loft? It just changes your 7I to a 6I, and they weren’t engineered that way.

@NHpro, I think there is already a topic about this. Maybe not about increasing length of shafts.

I have a set of Ping Eye 2’s. I just have them for some nostalgic fun. I wouldn’t mess around with the lofts. Are you doing the work yourself?

yes, I've been a clubmaker for a long time and have always admired the Eye 2.

I also have an old set of Ping Eye-2's. They're fine just the way they are. Not sure why you'd want to deloft them.

I also have an old set of Ping ISI's which I actually like more than the Eye-2s.

Anyway, I would NOT deloft them. Certainly not 3 degrees. I've often said and I'll stand by this comment. I would always rather add a little loft to get my gapping correct rather than remove loft.

The Eye-2's gapping should be fine. You may want to tweak one here or there just to dial something in. But delofting the whole set seems silly.

Is there a reason you want to do this? Do you have a gap wedge that you are totally in love with and it's 49 degrees or something? If that's the case just drop the P-wedge out of the PING Eye-2 set and you should be good to go.

My reason is twofold, I'd like to get more distance from these clubs and also I would like to lower my ball flight.

For me, this adjustment makes sense.

They are your clubs you can do what you want. But if you really do bend these 4 degrees, and lengthen them one inch you won't have Ping Eye-2's anymore. Think about the 7 iron for example. Now you'll have a club marked 7 but at 5 iron length and 6 iron loft and almost no bounce at all. Removing all the bounce will lower your margin of error and you will lose a lot of the characteristics that make PING eye-2's so popular.

PING eye-2's are/were arguably the most successful set of irons ever. PING carried them as their "current" model for almost a decade. Tour pros and high handicappers both loved them. Again, you do what you want. But I think you are ruining them. If you want to hit them farther, just take a 5 iron, instead of a 6 iron. If you knock it on the green does anyone care what's written on the bottom of the club?

You are correct, they won't be original Ping Eye 2's anymore, but I hope to improve on the performance just a little bit.

As for the bounce you are correct again, but I feel comfortable with adjusting 3 degrees strong as Ping did their adjustments to 2 degrees without any major problems.

The length may be an issue, so if the 1" seems too much, then I will go back 1/2".

Thanks for your input!

Again, do what you want to do. But do get back to us and let us know how it comes out. I'm always curious.

If you can get launch monitor data on before and after. It might be interesting.

Good luck.

  • 1 month later...

A recent purchase of a used set of irons and a putter has yielded some interesting results.

The clubs were Ping Eye 2 Black Dot

The putter is a Ping Eye 2 Black Dot.

I checked the loft and lie of the irons and decided to adjust the loft only 3-4 degrees stronger as my iron shots seemed way too high.

The lie seemed OK, and I didn't want to mess with them as the metal on these clubs is quite hard and difficult to bend.

The putter was another matter, it had 8 degrees of loft and 76 degrees of lie.

Thankfully I do my own club bending on an older, basic model bending machine that I was able to purchase for less than $75, bending bar and stand included.

New specs on the putter is a healthy 3 degrees of loft and 70 degrees of lie.

I am putting much better now, and my alignment is true.

My experience with used clubs is this, make sure you get the loft/lie specs checked out before heading out to the golf course.

These loft adjustments have worked out well for me.

I have maintained the standard length shaft.

Again, the lower ball flight and 5-10 yd. increase in distance is what I was looking for.
