Finally Hitting Straight Shots, but Now I'm Hitting My Irons Very High

TL;DR Now that I am finally hitting the ball straight, only my iron shots are flying sky high. Should I be refitted?

I've finally made the swing changes I needed to hit the ball straight. I used to be all over the place.

Now I have a different problem that only affects my irons. My driver, 3 wood, and 2 hybrid have great distance and ball flight, but my iron shots are almost as high as they are far. I hit everything way shorter than I used to.

Could I have the wrong irons for my new swing? Could improving my swing have increased my swing speed?

Should I be refitted?

Current setup

  • Wilson C300 driver, 3 wood, and 2 hybrid: Fujikura Pro 58 Flex-S
  • Wilson D300 Irons: KBS Tour 80 Steel Flex-S
  • Wilson FG Tour PMP Wedges: Hi-Rev 125 Steel Flex-S

Thanks!

I recommend you create a My Swing thread in the member swings section. We should be able to help you when we see your irons swings.

You're ballooning your iron shots because the KBS Tour 80's are a light weight high spin and high launch shaft.

If you have the money...go get fit for another set of irons ad sell the current ones.

How high is too high?

I don’t have an exact figure.

If I had to match my ball flight to one of these, it would be 45, 50, or even higher.

That being said, I play lots of rounds with my uncle who’s a surveyor. He says it looks well over 100 feet. He can eye distances better than our GPS, so I’m assuming he’s close.

Hitting it over 100’ isn’t necessarily too high. PGA Tour average may be 90’, but plenty of players hit it up to 120’. Distance isn’t just about height. Hard for us to judge without knowing more.

Stiffer tipped "low spin" shafts will bring down the launch about a quarter of a degree and maybe 50 to 100 rpm backspin. Take care of the other 98.7% with technique.
