Okay so I'm chatting with this young golfer. (Like in his 20's or something.) He asked me a question to which I was forced to say I have no idea.

Can engraving or stamping be removed from a club?

The kid has a Scotty Cameron Putter. It is an older model and he likes it, but it has somebody else's initials stamped on it. Obviously he got it second hand. The initials are stamped and filled with paint. I told him you can remove the paint with jellied paint thinner, but I didn't know how to get rid of the stamping.

Anyone have any ideas?

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Nope.

You can stamp over it and just make a non descript pattern, you can hammer it out to lessen it, or you can grind it out. Obviously the last two will cause damage to the head and finish that will probably be far worse than the original stamping.

Probably easier to just live with it, or change his name!

Use a Dremel tool lightly to smooth the letters.
The impressions typically are not very deep embedded as the letter punch usually compress's the material outwards.

Depending on their location, I'm sure those small impressions could be filled by TIG welding without overheating the putter head. You'd just need to find out what type of steel (probably some sort of 300 series stainless) you are working with then grind/sand/polish to match the surrounding finish.

I was going to suggest some sort of weld/braze. I’d leave something like this to a club repair expert though. Not even sure if this is something they can/would do.

I've welded small cracks before, but the heat distorts the color of the club which then has to be polished and treated.
I was going to suggest filling the stamped area with JB Weld and then simply sand finish the area.
Or use an epoxy with metal dust particles to match the steel color.

Sending it to Scotty Cameron’s custom shop will probably be expensive. Although it seems all 20 somethings are Rockerfellers.  I’d try places like BOS, the putter lounge etc... and ask what can be done and the price.  They’ll have it looking like new at a reasonable price.

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
