I am interested in buying the Gen 2 PXG forged irons, but why do they put Maraging steel face on a forged iron? Doesn’t that negatively affect the feel of a forged iron? I want the “soft as buy” feel….will a maraging face ruin that?  Thanks.

A real forged iron is smashed into shape from a billet of carbon steel. Pxg’s are hollow. They press the back into a shape and weld on a mar aging face then fill with foam. That’s throwing around the word” forged” because it sells.

PXG offers a great experience when you want to hit them. I have a set of Gen3 and the DualCore irons. The Gen3 is pretty soft feeling. Not like Mizuno but very nice. The DualCore irons have a nice feel despite not being buttery.

Honestly, I doubt you can feel the difference between forged and cast, all else being the same.

Some of the hollow head irons feel different, like the AP1 vs AP2 or my CB. They have a springier feel.

Oh for sure.

I'm saying, forge and cast two identical heads, you can't tell the difference

Oh God yes you can tell the difference.  Feel in clubs is related to sound.  I have a set of Nike Vapor Pro Forged irons.  They are a one piece forging.  During my club fittings I have hit hollow headed irons such as the Ping i500.  Very clicky sound which transmits the feeling of a non solid one piece clubhead to your hands.

The hollow heads that say “forged” are a hollow forged body yes… but not a forged “club” because the face is not part of the forging.  The face is welded on separately.

The hollow heads filled with foam come closer to a better feel than the hollow ones with nothing in them for sure.  You want a good comparison test?  Go to an indoor place with a high ceiling and hit real forged vs hollow body “forged”

Sound is a very personal thing. I have terrible hearing so the "feel" of different clubs for me is a lot more similar. It has to be a big variant for me to pick up the difference. Having said that, what you wrote above is exactly true.

Sometimes the body is "forged" and the face is welded on separately. A lot of times the face is "forged" and welded to a cast body. Unfortunately stamping the word "forged" on a club these days doesn't really mean what it used to mean.

The foam does help. For my "tin ears" it makes it difficult for me to tell the difference. But I know that more discerning folks can still "feel" the difference. A lot of folks don't realize how important sound is to the feel of clubs. I have a friend whose son works for Cleveland/Srixon as a sound engineer. It sounds like (no pun intended) a pretty cool job. And a surprisingly important one.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I’m not a big fan of the TM foam. I have a gapr hybrid lying around in the garage. I could hit it pretty well, but I never liked the sound or feel of it. It didn’t “match” to the strike, IMO.

However, I think I like the feel of tungsten. I haven’t used another manufacturer’s clubs that have tungsten in them, but I have a Titleist u510 driving iron, and I absolutely love it. It’s hard to describe the feeling of the club. I thought it would be very clicky because it’s a gigantic hollow headed iron. There is a higher pitched sound, but it still has a “thwack” to it without feeling dead like the foam-injected hybrid I mentioned. It’s very subjective and hard for me to describe. Hopefully, it makes sense to some degree.

    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
