TST Explores the ShotScope H4 (Stats Tracking Device) and Pro LX Rangefinder

Recommended Posts

hello..... I had been reading about the H4 on this forum, and it looked really interesting so I bought it recently. I had no problem connecting to GPS about 10 days ago in my neighborhood course in Singapore. However, when I took it to the course yesterday, it did not connect at all. It would try to locate the course for about 10 - 20 seconds and then revert to the Select format screen.Β  Anyone else have this problem and figured out how to solve? I searched up online and it seems to be a regular issue with the H4.Β

It’s happened to me before. Usually if I turn it off and then on again, it works fine. I think it can have issues finding the satellite if there is interference around like a cell tower. Try turning it on when you get to the course and not right before teeing off.

I’ve experienced this also, power off & on seems to work.

I try to connect as soon as I get to the course so I am not messing with this on the tee box.

I can’t verify the integrity of the rounds stored because there’s no way I’m going to be able to edit the rounds with any accuracy at this point, but that’s how many I was able to upload.

Just make sure you log layups or punch-outs as "positional" shots.

Ran into a weird issue with the editor today. I forgot to hit the play back nine button on the H4 playing Neshanic Ridge/Lake today until midway through the 10th hole (Lake #1). I have to do this because Neshanic has three 9-hole courses that are listed separately so I have to tell Shot Scope what routing I played. Alternatively, I could have hit end round after Ridge #9 and then started a new round on Lake #1 and it would have stitched the two together into one 18 hole round. I was too focused on playing to pay attention to my H4 and I did neither of those things.

No shots were recorded and uploaded to #10 on the editor even though I caught the mistake sometime just before my approach shot or sometime after it, but either way I should have tagged three putts on the hole. The weird thing is when I went to add the hole manually, the editor puts the pin on Ridge #1 green (the two holes are next to each other). I added the shots in and had to edit them all so that the lie was correct. Clearly the software assumes I was in the rough because I was 100 yards right of the hole it thought I was on. I didn’t think anything of it and finished editing my round. Even weirder once I saved the round, the scorecard for Lake changed to Ridge. So it thinks I played Ridge twice, also messing up my GIR stats in the process. And after all that weirdness, the hole I manually added on #10 didn’t save anyway.Β

I made several different attempts at fixing this but eventually emailed support about it.

Someone from support got back to me today. There's an automated response from the email server that apologizes for the wait but honestly one business day is hardly a delay in my eyes. This isn't exactly a pressing issue. Unfortunately, they don't quite understand what the problem is and asked for a screenshot from me so I tried the best that I could to take a bunch through different steps and walk them through the issue.

I honestly would just say f*** it and delete the whole round but it's the best I've played all year and I want the stats.

When editing do the following.

  1. select the shot that is positional like a second on a par 5 or punch out.
  2. shot editor will come up.
  3. there will be 3 dots in the right side, click that.
  4. you can then select positional.
  5. there are other options too.

Question for the group regarding positional shots.Β

I had one in my last round where I had 286yds remaining into a long par 5. I don't have a club that can reach that, but I still was able to hit 3 wood and advanced it 260yds leaving myself just under 30yds to the pin.Β

Is that considered a positional shot? I wasn't "going for it" because I had no chance of reaching it, but I wasn't necessarily trying to leave myself a certain yardage or get back in play or anything.

(Btw I then hit the pitch shot to 3 feet and holed it for birdie on a 575yd par 5 and gained 1.19 strokes compared to scratch and 0.79 vs a Tour Player on that hole alone)

Β

Β

Also something else I find surprising is that for my tee shot on that hole, which was actually with a 3 wood due to where water pinches in, went 286yds (sloped fairway got me some extra roll beyond my normal 260 range) and just trickled about a foot or so into the left rough and per strokes gained I lost 0.02 strokes on that compared to scratch. I get that strokes gained doesn't distinguish how far in the rough it goes, but I was still a bit surprised that hitting it 286 in the rough is considered worse than average off the tee for a scratch player.Β

I was curious so I moved that tee shot into the fairway, then it says I gained 0.10 strokes compared to scratch. The 3 footer I made for birdie on the same hole gained 0.14 strokes compared to scratch. Moving it around a bit more, 290yd tee shot in the fairway is 0.10 strokes gained but 294yds is 0.21 strokes gained? I don't get how an extra 1% or 12 feet more on a 290yd drive makes 0.11 difference in strokes gained.

I thought I understood strokes gained pretty well but that seems a bit odd to me that a 286-290yd drive in the fairway isn't as "above average" for a scratch player as holing a 3 footer is.Β

Β

Edit - Did a bit more poking around and am even more confused. A 247yd tee shot in the fairway gained me 0.05 strokes but 286 in the rough loses 0.02? 40yds further ahead but in the rough cost me almost a full tenth of a stroke? That doesn't feel right (or I don't understand strokes gained as well as I thought I did)

Yea that’s a positional shot. Otherwise it’s considered an approach shot and you would have missed the pin short by 90’.

A positional shot is an approach shot where you are not attempting to hit the green, instead you are intentionally playing into another part of the course. The two typical scenarios where this would occur would be:

1) On a par 5 when you can't reach the green so lay up to a suitable distance for your third shot.

2) If your drive goes into trouble and you need to play out sideways on the second shot.

By marking a shot as "Positional" it will be excluded from the "Approach' "Short Game" and "Club" stats in your performance data which means your stats stay accurate.Click here to find out how to mark a positional shot.

Interesting. Now I am curious as to why the system assumes that you have to be able to hit the green on the second shot on a par 5....

Its not. They are just giving an example in a situation say if cant reach it. Example, You have 230 to the center of the green, you cant hit a club you have that far, so you whip out a 3/5 wood or whatever, but you have to hit it soft because there is trouble in front of the green, a bunker or water. A full swing would land you in the trouble. You want to lay up as close to the green as you can. So you aren't hitting a full shot with that club so for distance tracking you can make that shot a provisional and it wont affect the distance stats.Β
