So I was reading some threads on slices the other day and someone (think it was on this forum) wrote about the 150 yard driver swing.

He talked about just getting up to the ball and tell yourself to bomb it out to 150 yards with your driver.

You know what... it worked great!!!

I remembered this on the 8th hole today and decided to give it a try. For the rest of the day my drives went straight or very slight fade (4 to 6 yards) and they were consistently at the 225 - 235 mark measured with a GPS.

What a great swing thought, no mechanics, just hit it 150. I love it!

Yup. When my driver shots start turning bad, I go to the range and try 75 and up to about 150. Amazing how far and straight it goes when you get to that.

This is also why a lot of pros love good tempo

WHen you slow youre swing down, you actually get a better impact position, making the club square at impact which makes you hit it straight and far

Now, combine that with 120mph swing speed you get 350 yard drives; with tiger woods having perfcect impact position and more than enough swing speed for a small country you get the idea

But yes this is a great drill

The rest of the stats are ugly so you can forget those! ;)

It is really the up and downs that kill me....

in the sand I walk in with confidence that I can get it close a lot of times but around the greens I am just doing dumb stuff.

Today I walked up to the sand with a 56/12 and saw how wet and hard it looked and pulled out a 60/7 and stopped it 5 feet from the hole and 1 putted.

I also started using my pitching wedge today for more of my chip shots and just going by feel for distance instead of using a 56 or 60 and trying to hit a flop shot.

The good thing is I know what I am doing wrong, I just have to make it happen!

Im definately going to try this next time Im on the course. I hook the ball though, do you think this technique would work for me?

It should work. Its just a way to get yourself to relax. I played a really long course the other day that has narrow, tree'd fairways and 2 creeks in play on 13 of the 18 holes. Off the tee with my driver I just told myself to keep it in play, don't worry about distance. Oddly, I hit straight and was carrying my normal drive distance and other times crushing it.

I had an instructor years back that, to slow me down, would have me try to land balls around the 100 yars flag with a 4 or a 5 iron.
If you tend to be fast, try it. It is hard!!.............on top of that you will unintentionally hit the best 150 yard plus shots you ever hit

I had a friend that every time I started playing bad would tell me "hit it 100 yards". Even if it was 180 par 3 or 200 to the green on a par 4

It works!!!

Aha thats awsome, I've never thought of it like that.

Tiger Wood's uses a drill similar too this, He tee's up 3 balls (driver height), and hits all 3 balls in sequence, the first he hits at about 50%, the second at 75% and hits the third with a normal swing, the drill is designed to stop him getting too quick with his driver.

What do you guys mean by this 150 yard swing? Are you meaning a half swing, or a full swing just done very slowly & relaxed?

Its in your mind.... I just got up to the ball and used a relaxed full swing knowing that if it went 150 yards I would be happy! I let the club do the work and it went 230 and straight!

I think it is a mental trick to slow your tempo without thinking about the mechanical side of the swing. I wasn't thinking about pausing at the top or slowing down the takeaway or anything like that.

I dunno..hitting a driver 150 is harder than it sounds...LOL. My pro told me about a drill that David Love III's father used to make him do where he would have to hit drivers 100 yards on the dot, all carry. Its really hard, man.

Yep I heard Davis say he could hit his 7 iron 200 yards as a kid but he didnt become a great golfer until he learned how to hit his 7 iron 150. Trying to hit every club as hard as you can kills most swings and gets you outa sequence. Amazing things happen when you slow it down. Tempo is king.

I tend to be a little quick with my driver at the top...I sometimes jerk the club down to start the downswing. Kills your distance and accuracy. I will give this a try next time that problem starts to creep into my game.

Although I would imagine you need to make sure you still accelerate through the ball. Thinking about only hitting it 150 might cause me to decel at impact.

I think this is tough too. Might start swinging to 9 oclock on the backswing and through to 3 on the forward swing and gradually increase from there maintaining the same tempo.

The problem with longer clubs is they self swing faster all by themselves due to the longer length of the club so, therefore, the same swing tempo works for all clubs, but, the mind thinks you have to hit the longer clubs harder and when you swing harder you are off center, off plane and decelerating through the impact area
