I'm considering starting a new sub-forum, ideally dealing with the various texts that exist on the topic of golf.

For example, one thread would be called "The Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz" and another would be called "The Art of the Short Game by Stan Utley." We'd also have "method" discussions, like perhaps "The One-Plane Swing (Jim Hardy)" or "Stack and Tilt (Plummer and Bennett)".

Nobody would be allowed to create new topics, though I would create new topics (based on new books or whole methods), on request.

So, a few questions:
1) Would you like to see such a sub-forum?
2) Where would you put it? I think the Pro Shop might work best.
3) What would you call the forum itself?

Answer those and share any other thoughts you have.

P.S. Current "Sub-Forums" are "Playgrounds" and "Equipment" and "Swing Tips," for example. This would be on a similar level with those sub-forums. Technically, "The Clubhouse" is a sub-forum as well, but it only houses other sub-forums, not threads.

I like the idea and agree the ProShop would be a good place for it. With your thread examples I like the tile of Swing Theories but I get the idea that you may have other golf topics so that may not work.

I like the idea. Most of the time, the threads started in other sub forums dont provoke much thought/introspection. They also tend to constitute random ramblings and discussions get sidetracked. I think this sub-forum should be heavily moderated to the extent that if it does not contribute to the idea, the post should be removed immediately. It should be such that the person posting should really have worked on it and not just post some personal untested idea.

I like "Editorials" under Pro Shop. I hope I will be good enough to post replies on there in a few years but till then, I will just lap everything up quietly and go to work on it.

1) No, although it seems like a good idea, I'm sure it would lead so off topic one way or another, which results in alot of forum preening for you

Don't see why it couldn't be posted in the Swing Tips forum. I love the forums just the way they are. Hopefully it doesn't turn into Golf WRX. (their forums are so unorganized and messy) (Just my thoughts) 2) Pro Shop as well. 3) Maybe call it, Swing Mechanics?

How would it be worse than it is now where once a week (or at least once a month) someone asks about the Short Game Bible or something? I see this as a way to do LESS, not MORE pruning (you probably didn't mean preening).

To answer the questions...

1. Yes. Absolutely. Not only is the idea great, but anything that contains (almost) solely coherent posts by intelligent members is OK in my book. 2. In the Pro Shop. 3. I like the "Editorials" suggestion, though I myslef would go with "Perspectives." Another idea: Could we include intelligent discussions of golf history in here as well? I would love especially to discuss anything before 1960... golf existed before Arnie and Jack.

You know, just after I was thinking we don't do enough preening around here

I like the idea, and it would be good to merge the threads of the books. They do come up quite often. I figure topics like the "Do you use Utley or Pelz putting style" would still be under swing thoughts, so our discussions would be limited to the book on hand? There are probably a few issues, such as whether Harvey gets four topics or one, but those can be ironed out pretty quickly.

1. I like the idea a lot. I'm actually looking for a thread that mentioned a book that I'm interested in buying....

2. Either the Pro Shop or Clubhouse would make sense. The Clubhouse makes more sense to me as that is where the Swing Tips sub-forum resides.

3. "Perspectives".... I like that! "Theories" wouldn't be bad either....but that might be quite inviting to less informed discussion.

Quite honestly, I don't know that I like any of those. "Reading Material" seems like it might apply, but what if you're just discussing a general theory that doesn't HAVE to be strictly related to a book or even an article? Or a DVD?

"Materials, Theories, and Thoughts" might cover it all, but that's just brainstorming. There may be some obvious flaws with that I haven't seen yet.

Well once a week is fine, I thought it would be more of an ongoing discussion once you make a topic a day or something.

So, three answers:

1. Yes. 2. Pro Shop seems to me to be more about equipment. Why not The Clubhouse? I know you said The Clubhouse is a sub-forum but, then, isn't the Pro Shop, too? And don't we already have related topics such as swing tips, etc., in the Clubhouse rather than the Pro Shop? 3. How about Twist and Shout? Seriously, how about : Playing Ideas in Print . Or: The Game in Print: Ideas and Discussion ? Great idea. I look forward to seeing it.

Yes, I think it would be a good idea. I think it would be best as another sub forum inside the clubhouse.

As for names, how about 'The reading room' or, 'The library'?

I think its a good idea. I like the idea of calling it "The Library" because essentially we would be discussing articles, books etc on different theories etc.

I can change the name at a later time. For now, it's The Reading Room.

Damn, I was gonna chime in and suggest a play on words like "Nice Read" as in you read the line of your putt well. Corny, I know.

I agree - its a good idea. I remember not too long ago I asked iacas about a book I'm sure he referenced over and over and over...

I was going to do the same thing. The name that came to me yesterday was "Approaches". As in one's

Approach to the game and Approach shots . Also corny....

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
