Average Distances - How Far Do You Hit Each Club? (And Don't Lie!)

I still don't know all of my distances in terms of carry for anything past 150.  I thought my 9-iron was traveling 152, but I took a couple of measurements today and they were closer to 162.  I've been working on getting a lot of smash and hit with the right arm now, so maybe that's the difference.  It's a touch hotter this month so that adds some yards too.  400 yards straightaway is 4-iron, 9-iron for me currently.  3-wood works on pretty much any tee where before I would be taking driver.  Probably less than 280 yards, but I never really pay much attention to it, since there isn't anything other than lateral trouble on the courses I play.  I hit driver something like 5 times in the last month.  Just don't need to now.  Things keep changing, so I've just started "feeling" the distances.  Needed some work on that for sure at first because I couldn't convince myself that I was around 2 clubs longer (maybe 3) than before.  People I play with are starting to notice that the sound of my shots is different.  There's this "crack" that wasn't there before and the ball seems to hiss all the way to the apex too.  I thought I was hitting it good before, but the wow factor just wasn't there apparently, judging by the number of people who say "wow".  When they inevitably start asking questions, I tell them to check out the sand trap, start reading and get to work.  :-) At some point, I'll pull out the gps and charts or rent some time with a Trackman fitter and have the numbers game figured out...

Huh? WTF does any of this mean? So, exactly how far do you hit your clubs?

Sounds like about 2-3 clubs past the benchmark for being called a liar at thesandtrap.com.

Wow, someone who hits the ball like me. I was beginning to think I was the only golfer on the planet who didn't hit a driver at least 260.

It depends on a lot of things.

I'm 6ft 4in and 13st and fairly athletic. I would like to hit the ball a lot further but there is often a big crosswind on the course I play. If the wind is behind I can drive as much as 330 and if it is against 185. It can be brutal. But always I am striking the ball really well and the rest is down to God! I am envious of folk who play in hot climates where fairways have dried out and there is 100 yards roll. Don't think I get any where I play. With the irons I play blades and maybe lose 15 yards due to traditional lofts, lack of forgiveness etc. I'm off 7 and there is one guy off 2 at my club and he can out drive me by 50 yards. I've played with a dozen players from 10-28hc who almost never out-drive me. I take that as a fair reflection on the fact that Handicap and Av Drive Distance are related.

For all the contributors in this thread I'd venture that less than 10 can actually average the distances claimed. I'm not trying to take anyone down a peg or two. It's just whenever people are asked to put down their average- they put down their best.

I hit my driver around 280-285 but much like others... Where I live is very windy. I live on an Island so you can guess how the wind and ocean breeze can affect a shot. I hit my 7-iron between 175-180 if that helps.

Since switching to my Mizuno irons, I have lost almost an entire club length off irons but I hit it much higher and more controlled. So now i'm probably at this:

I bet the Mizunos are more "traditionally" lofted and your new 9 iron loft is your old pitching wedge's loft.

Depends on the season......if its hot like it now, im longer....cooler like spring or fall, im a good club shorter...mizuno mx25 irons and vokey wedges driver: so inconsistent that who knows! 295-265 3wood: 250ish 3iron: 230, but seldom hit it 4 iron: 215, i love my 4 iron 5 iron: 200-205 6iron: 190-195 7 iron: 180 8iron: 170 9 iron: 160 Pw: 150 52*: 130, i have too much gap here 56*: 100-110 60* 85 and in...... i like to play a knock down 52* in the 50-75 yard range too.....

Yeah quite possible

    • Day 56 - 2024-11-25 Did the BAD Challenge and hit a bunch more other little shots. This was one of the closer shots.
    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
