Are Staff bags pretentious??

I'm in the market for a new bag after one of the legs of my R7 stand bag broke and I was wondering what the feeling was about the staff bags. I just love the way they look and since I do 99.99% of my golfing from a cart (my home course has the gps carts and they are too hard to give up to walk) they seem to make sense. The only thing I was wondering about was will I get chased off the course since I am a 22 handicap??

More seriously though, do any of you guys have and pro/cons to the staff bags?? Are the worth the money?? They really seem like they would last since I see a ton of old ones at my club.

Personally, I wouldn't spend the money. I would look into a dual stand/cart bag with the 14 way dividers instead.

But, if it makes you happy, and you can afford it, go for it. Anyone who judges that your play doesn't warrant your bag isn't worth the time of day.

You can use whatever makes you happy, but remember that "staff" bags are designed to be billboards and have room for lots of rain gear and practice aids etc.

You might also note that college players and top amateurs often don't use them. Nor do pros without a contract - they use something much smaller and more practical. If you use a push cart, they don't sit properly and the clubs can get tangled up no matter how big the top is.

I have a staff bag.

It's never left my office. It holds putters. And a few wedges.

And that's about all it's likely ever going to do.

For regular golfers, staff bags are simply impractical.

Not necessarily. Living down here, walking just isn't an option on most courses. I have the biggest damn staff bag I can get, just because I never have to worry about carrying the silly thing any further than from the garage to the trunk of the car. It holds everything I own and I never have to worry about whether I have enough balls, a rain suit, wind shirt, sweater, sunscreen, extra gloves, spikes, etc.....it's all there, all the time.

It'd be a lot different if I could actually walk a course every now and then, which, btw, I'd prefer to do......

I can fit all that stuff in my cart bag too (an Ogio Atlas or something, IIRC). I still maintain that you don't need a bag that can hold three extra pairs of shoes in it to play golf.

Personally Id rather have a larger/heavier stand bag, so when I went to the range.

BUT believe me when I get my caddy I'm going to find the biggest heaviest bag ever to make him work for his money ;)

I also love the way they look. But like others said, they are impractical, especially so huge and 13 lbs+. Yet as I've said in another thread, you can go Taylor Made and Titleist, who both make cart bags as small staff bags, and both under 10 lbs. But for $325 and $235 respectively, that's a lot of money. I wish they all would make small, cart versions of their staff bags, and/or bag only companies make light staff looking bags. I definately might buy the Titelist midsized staff bag, if I get their irons. That isn't such a bad price. But the $325 Talyor Made is asking????? Talk about a overrated company! They are insane.

To me the staff bag is a dinosaur throwback to the 60's. I don't see the attraction. The are huge and heavy.

As to not walking because your course has GPS in the carts - Buy a lightweight carry bag and use the difference to by a handheld GPS. Then walk!!

I think if you like it and it serves your purpose then by all mean get it. It's your bag and your opinion should be the only one that matters. This also goes for the other pet peeve that other people have and that is iron headcovers. I have them and I don't really care what other people think. If some people think I'm somehow less of a man because I use headcovers then so be it.

I wouldn't waste my time...Staff bags should be left to the pro's, in my opinion. No normal person (especially a 20+ hdcp like, say, you or I) would need all of that room and billboard space in their bag.

and what if you want to walk a round alone, or something like that? you'd break your back lugging around that bag while trying to play. +1 for one of the dual-purpose stand bags with individual dividers

I think golf bags are a lot like attics.

You tend to fill up the available space with stuff you may or may not ever need.

Also, those giant staff bags are also a PITA for the guy who shares the golf cart with you, it's kinda like sitting next to the really fat guy on an airplane. There's only so much wiggle room.

With my Saturday game, we usually carpool to the more distant tracks. We can get 4 or 5 on board depending if it's an SUV or a car. We have one guy who has one of those tour staff bags, if it's car day, we meet him at the course, there's just no room in a trunk.

If you ever fly with your sticks, not only do you need a plus sized travel cover, I can almost guarantee you'll be hit with the over 50 lb surcharge most airlines now enjoy charging you.

So, if you always ride to the course alone, never share a cart, don't ever want to fly on a golf vacation, then a staff bag makes perfect sense.

I have a staff bag and a nice little carry bag. In Florida we almost always ride in carts, so the staff bag affords me more storage space for everything I need like sunscreen, bug spray, rain gear, drink mix, etc. The carry bag works great when I do walk or someone caddies for me. They both have their purpose.

A staff bag can be pretentious if you are one of those guys that puts their name on the bag just to get attention. You know the guys - They stand up on the range with the name showing and turn to look around every time they hit a shot to see if anyone saw their perfect form? They park their cart with the name on the bag showing right in front of the clubhouse where everyone can see? They always shoot 10 shots better when they play by themselves...
