65%...um, no. Lets say you average 280 off the tee (which I'm sure is a gross over-estimation). That leaves 238 to green….you are telling us that you will hit the green 65% of the time from 230+. Hell no… Pros average about 65% GIR playing championship length holes, but a championship length hole is typically not a 518 yard par 4. I smell a little bull

exactly, I'm a 2.5 handicap and I said 11-30 percent.

With a wide fairway and a receptive green (i.e. huge with room to run it up) I might be putting 30% of the time (driver, hybrid/2-iron). Length is not the issue - hitting/holding the green is.

I'm calling BS on nearly all the people who voted 11-30% unless you all legitimately mean 15% or less.

Most golfers don't hit 15% of their REGULAR GIR, let alone hitting and holding a green from 230 away or whatever.

Heck, I voted 1-10%. Now, I might think I'm closer to the upper end of that range, but I never gave 11-30% any consideration at all. Y'all realize you'd first have to hit the fairway - this isn't some wide open hole where you can just whale away. Hitting the fairway eliminates 50% of your chances, then you add in the fact that you'd also need to get the ball out there with some distance, eliminating another 50%. Now you're down to 25% and you haven't even hit your second shot - a shot that has to go 235 or so, be straight, AND not come up a yard short or a yard long.

Most par fives at your average golf course are about 520 yards - so all of you that vote 11-30% have two-putt birdies roughly once a round on the par fives you play? Call me a cynic, but I don't believe it.

And no, this isn't directed at anyone.

He gives you a fairway hit on the 11%-30% pick. Thats the way it reads anyway. Your right anyway though. I said 15% but 10% is prolly closer.

Yeah, that's true. I don't read it that way and I'm not sure why he included it... GIR is about hitting two good shots. Why give someone part of the first shot (you still have to hit it far).

Oh well.

I do recall including a crapload disclaimers when I estimated 30%. My long irons and my hybrid are my strengths. And yes, I'd probably 4-putt for a double bogey.

I agree... but yeah, as a few said he's giving us the fairway... still, most people will be 10% or less, and that's on a good day.

Way I see it... perfect lie after a nutted drive and I'm a good 238 away or perhaps more... that means 3-wood and there's not a ton of room to run one up there with those bunkers...

I voted 11-30% because i think i can do it. i've played at a course 3 times that has a 600 yard par 5, and was pin high on my second shot, but was about 20 yards to the right, lol. the second time, from the rough, hit a low boring draw 5 wood and left myself a 15 foot eagle putt. i'm probably closer to 15%, but it'a all about getting up and down.

nope. about a 20 degree dog leg left, and staright. the water is 280 to clear, but its on the left side of the fairway, and i was past it. GPS had drive at 330. I thought i was short, because it was a super low shot, bit it kept rolling onto the green. nothing is guarding the green though.

I voted 11-30. I know I could make it more than 10 times out of a hundred. That's the same thing as getting on a 520 yd par 5 in 2 - which I do somewhere in 11-33% range. If I had Scorecard , I could probably show you the data...

0%. Zero. Can't reach in two.

Yeah. Let's see, typically 240-250 with the driver, then maybe 220 with the 3W. That's 480 on a good day. If I get that close I still might have a 20% chance at par, but I'm virtually never going to be on in regulation.

If there was an offer of hitting a driver, then letting me tee it up & hit driver again I might be tempted to go for the 10%.
As it is I have no chance, the course I play at has a 535 par 5 & I can just squeeze into the 100 yard marker in 2.

I said 11-30 because I read the poll as, if I hit a hundred drives in the fairway, chances are good that 15 times I'm going to hit a good second shot and land on the green. I also read the poll as 100 times in row, not over a lifetime, thus providing the opportunity to quickly learn the hole and make adjustments until you're hitting it right.

In the course of a normal round, I would probably never hit this green in regulation, but I didn't read the poll that way. If we're talking a hundred random times, I'm sure I'm 0-10, probably being closer to 0%!

    • Day 133 - Played 9 again. Driver was great, putting was better, but shots inside 100 were awful.
    • Day 36: 15 balls, same as last few days. Then a little indoor putting.
    • hey guys, sorry about the kind of short notice, but i'm not going to be able to make it to the outing this year....
    • Had to correct the distance - should have read 5,400 not 5,500  yds.
    • Had to report this one - played Minnesott again today with my son.  We played behind the Friday Men's group and had a decently paced round.  My round started off par-par-bogie.  I was feeling good to be +1 through three.  Played the next two par - par and then disaster hits - well I thought it may be the unravelling of +1 through five.  Tee shot on six is a hard pull hook into the ditch separating four and six.  I know the ball is lost and re-tee - hitting three off the tee on this par five.  Long story short - what should have been at worst a bogie became a triple 8.  Now I'm +4 through six holes.  Get a solid par on seven (which I celebrated as a solid recovery hole).  Eight is a birdie and I'm back to three over.  Nine, a par 3 over water, finishes par for a 39 front.   We roll to the back to where I birdie ten (the toughest hole on the back) to be -1 after the first hole on the back, +2 for the round.  Par eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen - that was an in the zone moment.  Have to note that fourteen - the second par 3 on the back - I hit the tee shot just short right of the flag.  Easy pitch with the 56 should put me close for a tap in par.  It does not happen - as I duff the pitch to about 3yds closer.  I reset and this time I nip it nicely only to see it land and slowly roll to the cup and drop in for a chip-in par save ( a first).   We get to sixteen and I am thinking this could be a really good round.  It's also a par 5 and I hit a solid tee shot.  I'm about 220 from the center of the green and figure I can layup with the 3w as there is a nice landing area in front of the green and it would play nicely into the typical distance I hit this club.  I'm sitting about 50 yds from the flag to the right hand side.  I overcook the 56 and see the ball bounce off the back of the turtle green.  I hit an easy 56 again to see the ball roll to the other side of the green.  Long story it became a 3putt double.  Now I am +4 through sixteen.  The last two holes are solid pars - one an up and down, the other a GIR two putt. Finished the back 1 over at 37.  Total score is a 76!  A new personal best.  Best "all around" play through the bag to date.
