Hi guys! Ive been trying a 'stronger grip' with my left hand but wondered how important it is that i turn my right hand more underneath the grip so palms face each other! Is this correct??

reason i ask is that ive been told that a stronger grip will help me with my fade and occasional slice i have!!

any thoughts??

i used to hit fades as well with a neutral to weak grip.. now with a strong grip i hit 5-10yard draws.

You do want the "v's" aligned. So, if you make your left hand stronger, make your right hand stronger also. If one hand is in a weaker or stronger position on the club the resulting shots will be inconsistent. You want the hands to work as a unit--the only way to accomplish this, is for the "v's" to be aligned.

Here's an example of a strong (anti-slice) grip with the "v" alignment.

In the picture (point of reference would be the player's eyes) above, you can see three knuckles on the left hand. If you can see more than two knuckles on your left hand when looking down at the club, your grip is strong. Some players growing up in windy west Texas, play a four knuckle grip, so most of their shots are low draws (which play well in the wind)

it is very important that regardless of how strong or weak your grip is, that your palms face each other. if not your hands will not work as a unit and that could be something else to compensate for.

i am not sure "palms facing each other" should be a major (or correct) determinant when holding clubs, as illustrated by the drawing in uttex's post in which i do not see the palms facing each other. perhaps there are different variations even within strong or neutral or weak grip groups respectively. one outcome to watch out for is that with an improper grip the hinge of the wrists at the top of the swing is not optimal...for the lack of a better word.

meanwhile, i do believe strongly that when holding the putter, palms should face each other,,,

im not sure thats the best example of a strong grip, it looks pretty neutral in the right hand, slightly strong in the left, and i dont think the palms in that grip are "parallel" or facing.

I realize this a an very old thread but I find my hands oppose each other especially with my long clubs . I tried to weaken my grip so palms are more parallel to each other and I do find I have better control and power that way

however on green and close to the hole I feel that the opposite works better that is  both palms are both facing outwards as anatomically possible. When I try to make my hands parallel in putting I have to move my hands closer together to make it feel comfortable

I don't think a grip question is ever old.....it seems almost all pros grip the club in the top hand first then adjust the bottom hand to fit.I guess it can be done in either order, but whichever,my experience is the first hand on has to be bring the club head to a square position at impact with the second hand meshing up.

I've seen a lot who use the right hand first, then bring the left hand under as well.

Well to be honest ,boogie,...I think they start out by holding, not gripping, the club in the RH for RH players, but then add the upper hand and it's grip, then adjusting the RH to that.Phil has a different system, but then Phil would.

I've been doing it that way lately as well. It has been helping me keep the face pointed at my start direction.

I have started doing this a month or two ago as I address the ball. Holding the club in my right hand at address helps me keep from getting my hand to far forward.  I do agree that after I am aligned I "grip" the club with my left hand first.

i been finding that as a "Palm" gripper I am getting better at my tee balls and driver

I still like gripping the club at the base on my fingers for my iron shots

How laid off is your club at top swing? If you trace an arc going up without rolling your hands constantly keeping the club head " out", then strong grip with hands forward will work well. This will usually result in a chicken wing right elbow. Works pretty well for Jack Nicklaus. This kind of swing keeps you in the slot throughout the swing but feels separated.

i don't think I can do the left hand hand Palm + right hand  fingers like Jack teaches.  It's less confusing if I feel Palm-Palm or fingers-fingers. Just have to choose one

My experience with the palm /fingers issue  is it doesn't matter if the club is in the palm or "fingers" of the lead/upper hand as long as the pre-hinge and cocking are done correctly, but the club can only be in the palm of the lower hand if using a ten finger grip otherwise fingers are required for the interlock or overlap.

For golfers who cannot swing that good because of athleticism, a strong grip with 2 knuckles showing and a right hand underneath so that palms facing each other couple with swinging out to 1 o'clock works the most. Mind you that this grip will show a closed face. You have to forward press to make it square at address.. In addition make sure your sternum has to be inline with the low point which is usually the 1/3 back part of the ball. Works beautiful for me. It might work for you!

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
